Well, thanks, Joe! I, too, have added verses to a couple of songs that seemed to need them. It's always good when the original artist approves....(but I often sing 'em anyway....;>)

I will add your verse to my version.

Yes. I did write a middle verse. I played it for Norman Blake at a Festival a couple of years back and he gave me the nod.

Joe LaMay

in that link, there's even a 3rd verse I never heard Norman sing. I always thought it was too short.

We were both typing the lyrics to that song at the same time, Bill.

There's a second verse:

Now the long years have rolled past
and the weeds have choked the green grass
down the lane she goes walking all alone
and the wildflowers have faded
from the face of the lady
for the soldier who never did come home

Repeat chorus

and after typing it, I did a search on what I knew, and it is here

Don't know if this is what you want.

There is a song by that name written & recorded by Norman Blake. It is maybe 30 years old.

begins(from memory)

"Once a maid said to a soldier
Who was surely traveling over
To a land across the raging oceans foam.
Where the bullets fast were flyin',
And in numbers men lay dyin'
Far from the peaceful shores of home."

chorus is

"Meet me yonder, won't you then love,
Down the lane, by the Pine grove,
When I come from a far & distant land.
Where the fields are white with clover,
after all the wars are over,
When the fields are white with daisies once again."
