During the night a fire broke out in a hotel in Newquay,Cornwall.One person dead and 6 people missing,the hotel is completely gutted.Lets hope the other six are found safe and think of the person who passed away in the fire.

Heard this on the radio on the way home from Altrincham, no real detail caught other than 'a Cornish Hotel'. Had to check it out as soon as I got home, some of my favourite places are Cornish hotels!
Horrible news, I used to work for a Fire Prevention company and know a bit about the horrors of fire.
People just don't realise how devastating a fire can be, or how little it needs to start one.
Hope the six missing people turn up OK.

Very sad news indeed. I lived in Newquay Many years ago and it is a lovely town. I pray that those are missing are safe and well.

The six people missing has gone down to four and the man who died jumped from a hotel window.They are demolishing the building so they can make the building safe,so they can look for bodies.

The four people that are missing can not be searched for as the building is still unsafe to go into.Small fires keep erupting due to the heat of the fire and the wind blowing in Newquay.

Most of the holidaymakers came from the North-West of England on a Robinson's Coach holiday,the coach and hotel belong to the same company Holdsworth ltd.

It appears that there are yet more moves in both main political parties to do away with "unncessary red tape"

I don't know HiLo if it was called something else i live in South Wales and this story has hurt my heart.I often go on holiday with a coach company,my next trip is to Isle of Bute on the 6-9-07.Maybe thats why i feel for them one coachie to another.

Two people came forward who was missing now the fireman are looking for two people in the ruins.
The people in hospital are severe to very critical,so are prays go out to them and the ones who lost to the fire.

There weren't enough fire crews to cover the emergency. The fire service is constantly cutting out fire stations, reducing crews, and forcing the remaining crews to be "more flexible", i.e. work longer hours. The cuts have been vigorously opposed by the Fire Brigades Union, who are consistently presented in the media as hidebound union barons.

Can anyone give me a good reason why the people (accountants, chief executives and suchlike) who instigated these cuts should not be imprisoned for manslaughter?

Cant help but agree. The idea of making cuts in any emergency service seems mad to me. This is surely the result. Also, I understand that both extending ladder/turntables were out of use, undergoing repairs. Two to cover the whole of Cornwall cannot be enough. In this area with all the problems of holiday traffic there should be more equipment and resources than they obviously already have, spread over a wider area. Though I suppose those holding the purse strings will say they just cannot afford it - what price a life ?

It seems to me that there are far too many "hotels" which are merely housing cheaply converted. I have been in European and British hotels with one, small, winding, wooden staircase and no fire escape.

(I don't stay in places like that any longer.)

I don't know that this particular building was like that, but it could have been.

Fire safety is certainly something to think about when travelling, but it's never mentioned in the guidebooks.

This hotel was a very big hotel 50+ rooms not a large converted house.

As i said above the fire exit eas made of wood.
Newquay's both fire platforms were broken which is very unusual.
Even today the building is smouldering.

I stayed in a hotel in Canada which was entirely timber-built and the fire escape was a knotted rope that you threw out of the window and then shinned down. My kids were awake all night worrying, but fortunately we didn't have a fire.

The guy who jumped / fell was the son of one of the women who died. He was trapped trying to rescue his mother. A second set of remains have been found this morning according to local TV.

Yep mother and son from Cheslin Hey, Staffordshire. Neighbours were interviewed on local TV last night. Apparently had gone to Newquay many times together in the past, were visiting to watch a surfing competition. So,so sad for all concerned.
