I know this is not a Maritime song but a friend is looking for the music, sheet music preferably. I have looked everywhere and cannot find it. I know you Maritimers can find anything. I'm a Maritimer too but I got stuck.

I don't know what 'Maritime has to do with it - we're fairly diverse here.

It looks like the sheet music is collectible. I found some information on this page. Here are the lyrics. All I can find are references to collectible sheet music, so you might to better to search places that sell that sort of thing.

More of a talk song than a melodic ballad.

Has anyone looked into the Duke university or LoC Sheet Music Archives? for something in the 1930s, there's a good chance you'll find it there. Will try later tonight.

Lyrics:
EGYPTIAN ELLA
as sung by Ted Lewis, Ted Weems Orch., Jack Hylton, and Milt Hirth

Ella was a dancing girl who started getting fat
And every day brought three more pounds to Ella
Till at last poor Ella lost her job because of that
And what's worse, poor Ella lost her fella.
So she went to Egypt to forget.
She was such a hit that she's there yet;
If you hear of a girl who can shake and quake
Till it makes you think of a nervous snake
They're speaking of Egyptian Ella.
She weighs two-twenty, but they don't care,
They like 'em plenty that way out there
She has the love of ev'ry fella.
When she goes into her dance
By the river Nile
The boys all take their old sweethearts
And throw 'em to the crocodile!
Ev'ry sheik in the audience
Jumps up and hollers that she's immense
Oh how they love Egyptian Ella.

Yes sir, ladies and gentlemen,
Step right this way,
See Egyptian Ella
Why she even
That's right
Just like jelly on a plate!
Yes sir!

She's a great big gal
In a great big land
The boys all give her a great big hand

Ev'ry sheik in the audience
Jumps up and offers his love in tents
Oh how they love Egyptian Ella!

For sale here. $20, US I assume.

I didn't find it at Levy, Duke or LoC. Rather surprised it isn't at Levy.

I checked all of those (and the Australian Library and Oxford - other useful sources for sheet music) without success too. There are 2 copies at the UCLA Digital Sheet Music Archive (search for Egyptian), but it must be under copyright - I could only view the cover and the index record - the view sheet music link wasn't there for the song.

The version at redhotjazz linked by Q above is different from the one Sorcha posted, so I'll give that here. I'll try and make up a lead sheet for the song if I've got time.

EGYPTIAN ELLA
(Walter Doyle)

Verse:
Ella was a dancing gal who started getting fat
Well every day brought two more pounds to Ella.
Till one day she found she'd lost her job because of that,
And then to make it worse, she lost her fella.
So she took a trip to Egypt to forget,
But she made such a hit that she's there yet.

Chorus:
Well, if you hear of a gal who can shake and quake
Till it makes you think of a nervous snake
They're speaking of Egyptian Ella.

Why, she weighs two-twenty, but they don't care,
They like 'em plenty that way out there
She has the love of ev'ry fella.

Bridge:
Oh she does a dance with certain parts,
By the river Nile,
That make all he boys take their old sweethearts
And throw them to the crocodiles.

Chorus:
And ev'ry sheik in the audience
Jumps up and offers her love intense
Oh how they love Egyptian Ella.

Instrumental Break

Chorus:
Well the boys hang around while she plainly states
That she doesn't care a fig about dates,
So they can't make Egyptian Ella.

But a sheik tried to kidnap her once I'm told
Why she shook so much that he lost his hold
Oh, he couldn't take Egyptian Ella

Bridge:
So the pasha wrote her a royal note,
With his royal fist,
That said because of the dance she does
She's on his royal wedding list

Chorus:
And that's how fame of a different sort
Has come at last from an indoor sport
To our own Egyptian Ella.

Instrumental finish

Walter Doyle's song was a hit for several performers in the 1930s.
Copyright versions still around are by Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier,
Jack Hylton, Audreu Lavine, Ted Lewis, Ted Weems, Willie "The Lion" Smith, and several bands of the time, including the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.
The performers changed the words to suit themselves, so several lyrics are out there.
Sheet music is copyright, but a sheet music store should be able to sell you a score.

If not available in print, go to your public library. They can request photocopy or loan of Egyptian Ella from several sources, one is sjlibrary.org, which has Egyptian-ella, sheet music 1931, Doyle, Walter, Skinner and Frank; foxtrot 11 parts.
They are located in California, San Jose Public Libraries and San Jose State University.
A list of their holdings here:
http://www.sjlibrary.org/research/special/music_coll/index.html?t=3&l=0&g=E
Since the music is post-1923, institutions will not copy, but some loan.

Subject: Lyr Add: EGYPTIAN ELLA (Walter Doyle)
From: Q (Frank Staplin)

Song is composed of two verses and three choruses in this extended version; don't know how close it is to the Walter Doyle composition.

Lyr. Add: EGYPTIAN ELLA
Walter Doyle (perfessorbill.com)

Verse 1
Ella was a dancing girl who started getting fat,
Every day brought two more pounds to Ella.
'Til one day she found she'd lost her job because of that,
Then to make it worse she lost her fella.
And so she sailed to Egypt to forget,
But she made such a hit that she's there yet!

Chorus 1
If you hear of a gal who can shake and quake
'Til it makes you think of a nervous snake,
They're speaking of ... Egyptian Ella.
She weighs two-twenty but they don't care,
They like 'em plenty that way out there.
She has the love ... of every fella.
She does a dance and when she starts, by the River Nile,
The boys all take their old sweethearts
and throw 'em to the crocodiles!
Every sheik in the audience jumps up
and yells that, "She's immense."
How they love ... Egyptian Ella.

Verse 2
All the other dancers from the desert to the Nile
One by one admit that they are jealous.
For although they dance each night and wear their sweetest smile,
Ella's tent's the one that draws the fellas.
And yet her dance is something they can't steal,
For nothing else could do it but an eel.

Chorus 2
When the first sweet notes of the music sound,
The boys all gather from miles around,
Just to see ... Egyptian Ella.
And folks all know when those caravans
Start pouring in from the desert sands
That it must be ... Egyptian Ella.
Then Mister Sphinx sits up and blinks,
There's so much to see.
She squirms and shakes so the worms and snakes
All bite themselves from jealousy.
She's a great big gal in a great big land
and the boys all give her a great big hand,
How they love ... Egyptian Ella.

Chorus 3
The boys hang around but she plainly states,
She doesn't care a fig about dates,
And they can't make ... Egyptian Ella.
A sheik tried to kidnap her once I'm told
But she shook so much that he lost his hold,
He couldn't take ... Egyptian Ella.
So the Pash wrote her a royal note
With his royal fist,
It said because of the dance she does,
She's on his royal waiting list.
And that's how fame of a diff'rent sort
has come at last from an indoor sport,
To our own ... Egyptian Ella.

Hi. Music may be available through ebay. You may have to shop ebay several times because the music is old and collectible. That's how I got my copy. I shopped several times and was lucky enough to find a copy and bought it right away.
