Subject: Lyr Req: Polish Children's Song
From: GUEST,Emily Shinn
Date: 19 Aug 07 - 08:18 PM

A friend of mine who had a Polish baby-sitter growing up used to sing me the first few lines of what I assume was a Polish childrens' song that her nanny would sing her as a child. I would love to find the lyrics to it to learn, but I don't speak Polish at all and this was years ago, so I only remember the first few words (which unfortunately I think were nonsense words, or a name, or something). I think the song might have been about a clown? It started with a twice-repitition of the first two words, "Ficu micu" (<---???)

"Ficu micu
ficu micu..."

...and then I think the next line started with what sounded like "hopsa" and ended with what sounded like "sicu".

"Hopsa... ... ...sicu"

The meter of the song goes (with emphasis on the first beat and every other following beat in each line):
/ _ / _ / _ / _(<---the '/' and '_'s are beats, w/ the /'s emphasized)

/ _ / _ / _ / _
/ _ / _ / _ / _
/ _ / _ / _ /
/ _ / _ / _ _

I would love it if anyone who speaks Polish or knows of Polish folk or childrens' songs who recognizes the song I'm thinking of would be able to give me the Polish lyrics in a phonetic English format so I can read them and learn to sing it in Polish... a translation to English would be nice too, but isn't necessary.

Thanks,
-emily shinn

I think this one deserves to be refreshed. That first "f" sound can be confusing, so I looked through songs starting with "f," "v," and "b." No luck so far. We really need a Polish songs expert around here. Anybody know somebody we can contact when we're stuck?

I cannot speak Polish either but am learning as my daughter learns with her Babcia.
All I have found with nursery rhymes so far is Mama Lisa's site: www.mamalisa.com-world-poland.html
There are some Polish children's songs on that page (you can listen to some of them). I think you can even ask Mama Lisa questions.
Hope this helps!

That C bothers me. Is it pronounced like a K? In Polish, C is pronounced TS, i.e. "fitsu mitsu". My Polish is rusty, but it seems the phrase is just nonsense like tra la la.

I do think it is a nonesense phrase like "tra la la", so I guess I'm going to have to get in touch with my friend somehow if I ever want to figure this out... anyway, thanks for the help guys! I will post again if/when I find out anything about the song.

I talked to my friend on the phone today, and she sang it to me (ah, memories...), and she said she will type me up the lyrics in polish, in phonetic english, and an english translation. It does start with "ficu micu" (or fiku/miku, etc.) and this is just a nonsense name, the final words of the final line are "hop-sa-sa", which she said she believes is just meant to sound like the sound you make when you jump. The song is about a clown jumping, and the words mean something along the lines of "jump clown, jump. jump with us. I jump, we jump, jump with us clown." (or something very generally along those lines). I'll post what she sends me as soon as I get it!

To Irena: Thank you for the lyrics you posted!! Since I personally do not speak a word of polish myself, I'm curious if you have any tips or suggestions for pronouncing any parts of the lines you posted (they seem like they're a phonetic transcription, but my friend has told me that my pronunciation of "apparently phonetic" lyrics to some russian folk songs was totally "off"... so any additional pronunciation suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated!!).

Thanks again to everyone who's replied so far!

Hi,

You are welcome.
You would need someone who speaks polish to read this to you.
I could record this on CD and send to you (?)
I will check this site more often now. I would like to help you with this.
...are the any web sites where I could record this...
I will translate the lyrics after February 9, 2008.
Irena
