If she shows up, I will barricade us both in the cellar. I have lots of food and water and such and I have a nice "family room" set up that even has a double bed. Why, I could keep her safe down there until she escapes.

Gosh! What a racket... and I LIKE it. There is a flock of starlings, over two hundred, eating seeds and bugs in my eavestroughs. less work for me after the seeds and leaves are down. Summer is coming to close a calendar month early fer sure.

The Cottonwood trees in Juneau are turning and there are many of their leaves on the ground. But this is normal in Juneau. When I lived high up in a house overlooking a downhill slope I noticed that the upper reaches of deciduous trees turned color first. And that always happened in August.

Dark and windy? I think I married him....

The UK this morning (22nd) is very breezy - the clouds are positively hurtling along out there, the silver birch is undulating in the way that only silver birches can and the wind is coming straight down from the north... hopefully it'll blow the rain clouds away and the sun, which is struggling to break through now, will make it all the way. Rain before 7.00, fine before 11.00 is what they say. Hopefully today, it'll be true cos it was pissing down at 5.00am!

Subject: RE: BS: A bird question?
From: gnu - PM

One of my fav birds(Chickadee). Always seem cheerful and curious.

As for a second brood, the robins and others had three clutches here this year. Can't ever recall seeing that.

Plus, this past week, I saw a flock of starlings and a flock of blackbirds.... not a family or several families, flocks. The temps here in the first three weeks of july were the coolest I have ever seen. We had only three weeks of 30+ temps. The next several days are low 20's and, single digit temps at night... 6 on Monday morn!!!

Sooooo... early and long, cold winter with lots of snow OR lots of freeze-thaw?
********************************************************************

Well, the flocks of starlings are over a hundred each now and I just realized something today after having a couple of hours to sit out and "watch"... I heard a robin but did not see any. Now, a couple of weeks ago, we had robins galore, more than I have ever seen. The little buggers know sommat, eh?

well - if you're gonna celebrate midsummer's day in June and a season is 3 months - then summer ended a couple weeks ago.

It's been much cooler here this week, too..mid to upper 60s. Sorry to see summer end but I can certianly live without temps in the 90s in southern Maine! Better for sleeping, too.

I like the name "fairy floss" better than cotton candy (which is what we call it here)!

As Tinker reported, it's in the 60's here in New Jersey. And it's been raining for two days straight in my part of the state. But it's supposed to go back up to 90 later this week. I'd prefer the 60's without the rain, but I'm probably asking too much.

It's been a bit cooler in NS too - 18 to 22, but it is presently a gorgeous morning, very calm, neighbour's rooster is having a great early crowing session. September is my favourite month. It's usually around 18 to 24 days, cool at night, and we usually have an Indian Summer (warm spell) late in the month or early in October.

Cold & wet in the Blue Mtns too. It should be gettiing warmer by now, and on the odd occasuion when the sun does peek through you can feel the strength in it, but then the clouds come back, it gets cold and it starts to rain again.

All the small dams in the mountains are full, but I believe most of the state is still in serious drought, and not much water at all has fallen in the Warragamba catchment area, which is the main supply for Sydney.

They built the damned thing in the wrong place. Practically anywhere else would have done, but oh no, they had to build it where it would collect least of all possible rainfall. I guess it made sense at the time. I remmember when I was a kid there was a big deal because they doubled the height of the dam. Big ribbon-cutting gala opening day, hot dogs & fairy-floss...
Not much use if it doesn't rain where you've got your dam.

It hasn't cooled off much, but it smells different in Wyo already. We always expect 'fall' weather in late Aug. Usually a light frost by Sept. 15.

3rd week of over 100 F degree weather here in Alabama, and we're in a Stage 3 drought. The trees are dropping leaves, so we won't have a beautiful autumn this year. I'm very depressed over this weather, it's just unbearable and all my flowers and shrubs are dying because we're banned from watering. Farmers are losing all hope of a good harvest. No sign of rain or relief from the heat anytime soon.

Yep, 94 degrees here in the northern Nevada desert also. Makes the evening beer taste great. Fine weather for on the sitting redwood in the backyard and strumming the ol' guitar. Life is good.

The UK isn't too warm either - we've had a couple of really foul, rainy, cloudy days where the temperature has been cool enough for me to think 'I need a jacket'... Apparently September is going to be drier and sunnier, but I won't be putting my jacket away just yet.

Here in New Jersey it's all of 63 Fahrenheit at the momnet. It's not what the dog days of August are usually about. I'm pulling out sweatshirts instead of well sweating next to the air conditioner. By Friday they are saying high 80's -- go figure.

We've had unseasonably cool weather here in south-central Ontario for several days now. It's about 57 Fahrenheit out there today. That's rather odd weather for August.

As Ollie Williams reports: "IT'S COOL OUTSIDE!!!"
