No, not the one in Australia.

Anything going on in Lewisham or South East London on the traditional music front? Or, does anyone fancy starting anything up?

If your session/singaround needs a guitar player/pisspoor box player, post here. ;-)

Lewisham?? Blimey, didn't know there was anyone else with any interest in folk music down here! The Fox & Firkin on the high street has a lovely acoustic night most Sunday evenings, though that's more 'general acousticy stuff' than actual folk. Don't know of anything else - would be nice though, if you're thinking of starting something up...

I knew the F&F had live music, but didn't realise they had an acoustic night. They also have them at Dirty South, up Lee High Road, IIRC, although (again) I've never been myself.

One possibility for starting something up could be the Goldsmiths Tavern. They used to have acoustic nights in an upstairs room, which were singer/songwriter oriented with a bit of folk (this was a couple of years ago), but I think they died on their arse. But at least the management is sympathetic. The Tavern also has the advantage of being close to Goldsmiths College, which could provide a bit of an audience.

I should probably check out whether Goldsmiths has a folk club, and see what they're up to, and if they're interested in linking up.

The most active Folk Club in SE London is the "Folk Mob", which meets in Eltham (Wednesdays - upstairs at the Tudor Barn, Well Hall Pleasance, Eltham, London SE. From 8:30 - 02088 543178). There are regular music/singer sessions in Sydenham and if you want to go further afield there is the Folk Club at Ruskin House in Croydon and various sessions at pubs in Woolwich and elsewhere. If you go along to a Folk Mob session (they are usually musicians and singers' nights with occasional guest artists) in Eltham you will make contact with people who can point you towards all the other folk venues in the area.

Cheers for that, Jhim. I'm living up Lee High Road, so that's quite handy for me. Or so I've been told just now (what do I know? I've only lived in the borough for 5 years).

Apparently there are sessions at Dillons/Dylans in the town centre at weekends. There are a few others in the area and you can use the search facility at www.thesesssion.org to find these.

Cheers for the responses, all. It's a bit short notice for the Tudor Barn this week, I think, but the internet tells me that it's an easy journey from where I live (a choice of buses! Luxury!), so will try & come in the next couple of weeks.

When I worked at Goldsmiths' in the early '70s local pubs had lunchtime strippers and music was of the Kilburn & the High Roads variety tho' Stan Tracey was rumoured to have appeared once and we saw several good jazz acts at the old Concert Hall in Catford.

New Cross has now been gentrified, Roger. Some of the pubs won't let you in, unless your tattoos are spelled correctly.

Some years ago we bought tickets for a gig at the old Lewisham concert hall [now Lewisham Theatre] It was billed as 'An Evening with Andres Segovia' and for some reason we thought it was part of the comedy festival and local hero Spike Milligan might show up. Bugger me, come the night who should shuffle onto the stage but this dapper old gentleman carrying a guitar who sat down on the spotlit stool and for over the next hour played the most beautiful music with barely a squeak or a clunk despite having fingers obviously wracked with arthritis.

Of course it was Segovia, on a Sunday night! In Lewisham! Who'd have thought it? Glad to say I was there!

The Lewisham Theatre in Catford has had its moments over the years. I've seen Art Blakey (when there was a Lewisham Jazz festival) and The Chieftains. Now, it's mainly tribute bands.

There's an Irish session at The Blythe Hill Tavern, Stanstead Road, Catford, every Thursday evening from about 9.00 pm (get the 185 from Lewisham High Street, get off two stops past the Town Hall going towards Forest Hill). This is my local boozer!

A little bit further afield (nominally in Southwark) there's an acoustic night every Weds. The Easy Come Club has been going about 15 years, run by The Hank Dogs and is presently based at The Nun's Head (Nunhead Green, near Peckham). It's the closest you get to a folk club. The standard of performers is variable, but it's always a good time - also a chance to find out what's going on.

In the late '60's my wife had lodgings in New Cross opposite the Marquis of Granby [the Blessed Chris Wellard's record shop was two doors down]One memorable hot Saturday summer evening we had the sound of Big Tom and Mainliners from the Harp Club across the road blasting in the front of the flat and then King Crimson started up on the back lawn of Goldsmiths College at the back!

We attended the KC concert later and got a bit paranoid when they turned on the strobe effects, we thought the college back wall was crumbling! That may have been due in some part to that year's fine crop of herbal produce round the back of the pottery dept!

Great days!

buspassed mentions Chris Wellards'shop. I had to pass it twice a day and usually spent my lunch hours browsing his second hand stock which formed the basis of my vinyl collection of jazz & blues, mostly at ridiculous (low) prices. It closed soon after I left and my former colleagues attributed that to the loss of my custom(actually the college took back the lease so they could demolish and build on the site).

Whoa! What happened there? Not predictictive 'kin text on MC now surely?

Anyway I was about to say that I think Chris Wellard moved to a shop in Eltham after he was forced out of New Cross

The FolkMob folk club in South-East London no longer meet at the Tudor Barn in Well Hall Road, Eltham but have moved to the Rugby Club next door.
