Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Aug 07 - 12:07 PM Squeak, tell Manitas that a dampened sponge will remove the cat hair if rubbed across the instrument case in a swirling motion. Of course, he could always just close the case when not using it, but who remembers these mundane things when the Muse is calling? I worry that the dogs such as the one in the video are in pain and are suffering hearing damage. Who knows why they don't just run away when an instrument is too high? They're dogs, and they can't explain. We used to have fire trucks with sirens which set every dog in the neighborhood to howling. There's been a change, and now the dogs seem not to mind sirens at all. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Aug 07 - 10:08 AM I know this but Manitas has other ideas... he's not that happy about fur clogging up his bellows. I tell him, at least it's better than cat pee. LTS |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Genie Date: 29 Aug 07 - 09:24 AM Liz, didn't you know that instrument cases exist first and foremost for cats to sleep in? The instrument is merely an interloper if it happens to get there before the cat does. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Sorcha Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:51 AM I know some Basenjis who LOVE to sing with a harmonica. A full chorus of 9 'senjis is not to be believed. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Aug 07 - 06:24 AM Rumncoke - I'm with you on the torture thing... our cats vanish like smoke in a gale when Manitas gets one of his out. But they do like sleeping in the fur-lined case if he leaves it open and empty, and he's not playing. LTS |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Rumncoke Date: 29 Aug 07 - 06:16 AM My hearing was always set to slightly higher sounds than average - I can hear some bats, and those 'silent' dog whistles, but I can't hear low notes - most notably the engines of a ginormous tanker coming up behind the yacht when I was stearing - the look on the face of my relief coming up from below and then turning to see the bows looming up in the darkness will probably stay with me for life. Accordions usually make the most dreadful harmonics, high enough not to be included on recordings - after all who could hear them? Apparently me and dogs. If played gently the harmonics are much reduced, but get someone really making the thing honk and it is torture. I was trapped in a really crowded room with a beginner on a huge accordion really giving it a thrashing, and I was in hysterics because it felt as though my skull bones were suffering something close kin to continental drift. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Banjiman Date: 29 Aug 07 - 04:13 AM I grew up thinking that a dog howling was part of the sound produced by an accordion....we had a Jack Russel cross (OK mongrel!) which always howled along to my Dad's playing. I actually think the accordion sounds better this way....but what do I know, I play a banjo. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Sooz Date: 29 Aug 07 - 04:02 AM My border collie howls when I play my melodeon although I get the feeling it is not a sign of enjoyment! She doesn't respond to recordings either - I thought it was because John Kirkpatrick was a better player than me. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: the button Date: 29 Aug 07 - 03:56 AM My pet rats always prick up their ears to the sound of a slide guitar. The concertina, however, sends them scurrying for cover. |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Shuffer Date: 29 Aug 07 - 03:52 AM We used to have a Jack Russel who would come running in from wherever he was to stand on the arm of the chair with one paw on my shoulder and would howl at the top of his voice whenever I played the Melodeon. In fact my wife would say that she knew when we were getting the tune right when the dog began to howl. Only used to do it to live music though, took no notice whatsoever of recorded melodeons |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Ernest Date: 29 Aug 07 - 02:08 AM Dezzie O`Halloran (on his CD "the pund road")even lists Mattie the dog among the musicians - labeled as barking vocals! Best Ernest |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Genie Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:49 AM It's about an ACCORDION, Joe. What do you think? ;-D |
Subject: RE: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:43 AM I htink I have a recording of Barry Finn somewhere, with a hound howling in the background. Gives the recording character, it does. So, do I have to leave this thread in the music section???? -Joe- |
Subject: Basset howls along with accordion... From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:34 AM Dogs LOVE the accordion, and the harmonica too. Here's a Basset Hound thoroughly enjoying the accordion session and joining in. Just howlin' along... |
