In normal cases a bit of assertiveness training, to say "I'm not playing" would be more helpful, but in this case we don't know what the situation is.

It's best not to judge without knowing the full facts, which you never can from a snippet like that.   

It might well be a case of over protection, likely driven by worries about legal trouble rather than by concern for children - but on the other hand this might be a case of a school making a sensible pragmatic ruling in face of the actual situation int its playground.

Innocent games can sometimes be used as a cover for serious bullying, and serious bullying matters.

I know of schools where someone who was "hollybushed "would be likely to go home and come back with a gun--and don't call anybody a sissy, Peace, because that can you in trouble too--

Was never in a holly bush, 'cept to get holly for Christmas decorations.

I grew up with a clip round the ear. For getting caught.

At Bancroft's School, Woodford Green, Essex, England, we had an old custom called "hollybushing". This consisted of the larger boys (second year and a lot of hollybush veterans) hunting down the first years and flinging them into a holly bush. Some of the little sadists tried the ultimate deterrent - gorsebushing, which doesn't bear thinking about. This was in the 1960s, and I can safely say that not only did I escape hollybushing, but I didn't want to set a bad example - after all, my little brother was in the first year, and I had to protect him!

Bancroft's has introduced girls now, and customs change. I don't know if hollybushing exists or not - it was a pretty cruel ritual, designed to hurt the younger boys. I hope it has been banned!

We had a playground game called "scrum". Someone took a ball from a group who were playing with it and two teams formed (how you knew who was in your team I'm not sure). You threw the ball to members of your team, the other team tried to get it. The teams enlarged till most of the playground was playing. Of course that may not have been the game the ball's owners wanted to play, but it didn't get viciously rough.

On the last day of term it was traditional to have a group singing in a circle in the playground, this also enlarged to include most of the school of 300. Can only remember a few songs, maybe the Conger, and
"She was bathing in the river and she got her feet wet
...
But she hasn't got her - - (two claps, I think) wet yet"
to the tune John Browns body, various verses until her head is wet, but still not her - - (whatever that was).

Scrum was frowned on, but never banned. One year the singing was banned, because the Boys School in the other end of the building had lunch earlier and were having their end of term service. Great indignation all round, and a determination that "if they say 'no singing' we won't sing the hymns in the end of term service"

This was at Secondary school in Chiswick England (age 11-18, 1950s)

I have watched kids (I grew up in the days of families with more than ONE child, and had lots of cousins too) - some little slimy arseholes will eagerly START something, then complain when they come off second best... :-) and 'mummy' will 'believe her little darling'.... :-)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - An elementary school has banned tag on its playground after some children complained they were harassed or chased against their will.

"It causes a lot of conflict on the playground," said Cindy Fesgen, assistant principal of the Discovery Canyon Campus school.

Running games are still allowed as long as students don't chase each other, she said.
