Subject: Carry it on, Kat!!!! From: JVZ Date: 20 Apr 99 - 07:01 PM In the thread about persons we would like to have seen in concert, our friend Katlaughing mentioned her grandfather and his father. However, as I undrestand it, her father carried on the traditions and she has heard them through him. Now Kat is picking up the torch adding her own flavor to the mix, and that is as it should be and as it has always been. Nevertheless, in these days of video tape and digital recordings, the possibilities of saving the stylings of some of these wonderful individuals are without limits. Although Kat cannot hear her grandfather and her great grandfather, her great grand children (or anyone else living in that distant time) can hear her and her father. This appliies also to the non-musical aspects of our lives. I would encourage anyone and everyone to do as I have done and sit the elder members of your family down in front of a video camera for a couple hours of just talking about their lives. I did this with my parents and not only created something for future generations, but learned all kinds of wonderful things about them in the process. Anyway, -- Carry it on, Kat. |

Subject: RE: Carry it on, Kat!!!! From: katlaughing Date: 20 Apr 99 - 09:19 PM Thanks, JVZ and my dear sister, bet! As a matter of fact, I did get my dad to do a tape of family history a few years ago and he is supposed to be doing another this year. I also want to get him on videotape, as you suggest. This year, for Christmas, I scanned in a whole bunch of early pictures of our homesteading grandparents and our grandma's written stories, as well as my dad's and put them in ring binders for my siblings and their children and mine. When I get more tapes, music and spoken, (he's taping my ranching grandfather's poems, right now) from dad, I will send dubs along to add to everybody's Christmas book. This is a wonderful suggestiona nd might I add, do not be shy about preserving yourself for those generations to come; someday you will be the grandparent someone posts to the Mudcat about. To that end, for my twin grandsons' first bithday in May, I am sending the a tape of grandma singing lullabies and reading stories. Thank you so much JVZ. It means a lot to me that you noticed my post and that you cared enought to start this one. You, too, bet! Love youse guys! katlaughing |
Subject: RE: Carry it on, Kat!!!! From: JVZ Date: 20 Apr 99 - 10:28 PM Thank you for the sentiments, Kat. I, too, have started making tapes for my grandchildren. Grandpa isn't Barney, but I think they kind of like it anyway John |
