4. favorite authors/ type of book? I mostly read science-fiction, in either the space-opera/shoot-'em-up or alternate history sub-genres

5. what books have you really been wanting? I tend to either buy what I want as soon as it comes out or frequent the public library for things I don't want to keep.

6. what type of music do you like? Folk (well, duh!)..."Celtic" (whatever that means to you), regional to my SS's area of the world, nothing overly electronic or outlandish (no didgeridoos, please)

7. what CDs have you really been wanting? See #5. Anything by my SS or that she/he especially enjoys.

8. What movies have you been wanting? (specify DVD or VHS) Well, if anyone has a set of Lord Peter videos cluttering up the place...

9. what is your t-shirt size? XXL, rapidly approaching a comfortable XL. Bigish, but not outlandish.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what? I'm not really a collector-I have a lot of one-of-a-kind things that represent memories of one kind or another. Well, I do have a wonderful collection of bodhran tippers, only two of which I ever use.

11. what are some of your other hobbies? I tend to drink coffee a lot, but no beans, please. I also tend to drink beer a lot, thus the need for a biggish t-shirt.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Silver, but I only wear my ring and my 60th b-day bracelet.

I really like to read a new novel by Robert Heinlein, but I think that it would be difficult (I have the one he co-wrote with Spider Robinson). So: history, folklore, true crime prior to about 1900, forensic sciences, good humor, history of the Bronze Age Celts, swordsmanship, archery, riflery, outdoors, science, thoughtful discussions of contemporary social and political problems....

If I want it badly enough I generally buy it. I wouldn't say no to an original Gutenburg Bible, though.

6. what type of music do you like?

Folk, jazz, blues. Even banjo and bagpipe music.

7. what CDs have you really been wanting?

Ones of high denomination that pay extremely high interest.

In DVD, the whole Harry Potter series.

Small decorations to cover & surround my tiny little chrissy tree - it's 6'/15cm tall & so cute.
World-traveller plastic/paper carry bags - I have bags from Washington, Oregon, Bahrain, Norfolk Island, London ...
Crafty books & projects I'll probably never get around to doing!
Interesting stuff from charity shop like (small) second-hand toys, penguins, sheeps, cats ...

I am a radical atheist and the parent of 12-y-o twin boys, not identical. The elder is sitting here saying "Say I like chocolate!" (LOL)

In terms of dislikes, I don't like breathy singers, I prefer full-throttle voices (example: on Enjoy Every Sandwich, the Warren Zevon tribute album, the woman who sings Don't Let Us Get Old needs a punch in the stomach to get the rest of her voice out.) I love chocolate, especially dark. I dislike fresh cilantro, anything licorice-flavored, and cashews.

This is going to be fun!

4. favorite authors/ type of book? Folktale collections, wonder tales (stories with magic), humor (love Berkley Breathed ["Bloom County"], Gary Larson ["The Far Side"], Walt Kelly ["Pogo"])

5. what books have you really been wanting? I want for nothing -- surprise me. The answer above was just to give you a general sense of my character.

6. what type of music do you like? traditional story-telling ballads, light opera, operetta, Celtic, East African, Brazillian, Beattles, Three Dog Night, Classical, Early twentieth century American Popular Standard (20's and 30s')... almost anything in moderation, though some I can listen to for longer before I lose patience.

Well, I'm still female (more 'old biddy' than 'femme fatale' anymore) and, by time Christmas rolls 'round I'll be 55.

I like blues, sea-greens and red reds.

I don't think I really have a favourite author or any specific books that I've been 'dying' to have. However, I'd quite like to have something on shape-note singing, if Santa is into that sort of thing, or anything that discusses older singing traditions. That brings us nicely on to favourite musics and CDs. I'm a sucker for archival recordings and have a couple of the American series (Texas McFadden, Songs of the Anthracite Miners, etc.). There are a couple in the Folk Legacy catelogue which I wouldn't mind having ...

I think movies are problematic (formats 'n' stuff) and I don't wear t-shirts.

I collect way too much stuff but none of it 'planned'. I cook and sew and do a bit of gardening. I'm beginning to fool around with bead and wire jewellery (I personally only wear silver-tone). I'm not keen on patchwork but I like to do the quilting bit.

I don't think I'm allergic to anything but I'd prefer not to get anything with a strong scent as it makes me sneeze. If given a choice between something chocolate and something almond, I'd probably take the almond ... but if I was faced with chocolate covered marzipan I might just about cope. 8-}

As in previous years, I would be pleased to have anything home-made by my Santa. I also would welcome anything 'previously owned', including cook books and hymn books (weight allowing).

Ah! AND ... I like newspaper 'funnies' sections. My secret santa one year packed my parcel with scrudged up funny papers from the USA and I had a great time reading them!

It depends entirely on the type of foodstuff and how it's packaged. Perishable stuff is obviously not a good idea, neither are tins or bottles. Dried, packet foods work well, as do boxes of wrapped sweets, chocolates, toffees (fill in the customs label with 'candy' though - it helps a lot), fruit cake if well wrapped has passed the portals of Homeland Security unmolested. Try not to send ground coffee or aniseed balls though - sniffer dogs react to these scents as they're commonly used to attempt to disguise drug shipments (I only know this because I work for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, not from any personal experience of smug druggling)...

I think I forsee an illegal 'dried mushy pea and Lifesaver' smuggling ring starting up here...

Liz, that's the sensible answer (re: food) but I recall that, a couple of years ago, the USA Customs people decided you couldn't send ANY kind of food (tea, chocolate, nuffin!) to the USA in a parcel, or take it over the border. I don't know a) if it is still in effect or b) if anyone actually enforces it. I was at Mum's in Canada at the time and, strictly speaking, we weren't even allowed to take a picnic over to a party in Buffalo but the crossing guys didn't seem to be much bothered so life went on as usual.

Just wondering what the current situation is ...

An Import Permit is not required.

Cooked cakes, biscuits, puddings (puddings with suet are prohibited) mailed to Australia that are shelf stable and do not require refrigeration to retain their freshness are all allowed by quarantine, subject to inspection on arrival.
