Subject: Richie Havens in Yorkshire
From: Nick
Date: 31 Aug 07 - 12:37 PM

Has anyone seen him over the last few years?

I picked up the list of concerts for Pocklington Arts Centre (in East Yorkshire) today and saw that he is playing there at the end of October. It's a lovely venue (200 people) to listen to people at but I wondered what he was like these days. I always enjoyed "The Great Blind Degree" as an album and think he is a great interpreter of others songs

I saw him in concert in Toronto about 2 years ago. The man is still the man. To see those powerful hands creating the rhythms we associate with him was a tremendous experience. Great singer/showman/writer/player. I echo the above sentiment. Go see him play...

Yup, he was one of the headliners a the Boston Folk Festival, up on the big stage (no coffeehouse setting here) a few years back, he "WOW"ed the crowd, they loved him! He was as much the performer there as he was in the 60's maybe a bit melloer & possibily a bit better too.

I remember him as a fantastic street busker outside the [4th St?]Greenwich Village subway station on 7th Ave, across the street from where the Folklore Center ended up after Izzy moved it off MacDougal St., ca 1965. REALLY worn thru top on that old [ Guild ? ] guitar, from Richie's inimitable strum stylings. He also played "backwards", if I remember correctly, fretting directly across the neck in place of the usual wrap-around hand position. And what a voice ! A friend tempted fate one time asking him to play "All I want for Christmas", as this was before Mr Havens had the dental work to fill the gap. We were young, foolish and politically incorrect. Impressed and impressionable. Thank you Richie !!

I've seen him twice in the past 5 years or so - he is INCREDIBLE. Energy, warmth, humanity and fantastic music. Go! Enjoy! Speak to him afterwards -- he's totally approachable and has the kind of warm, firm handshake you would expect of such an amazing personage.

Peace,

Desert Dancer and I saw him at the Kate Wolf festival in June/July and it was wonderful. Not only is his power of playing and singing great, but he was very humorous and enjoyable. His backup people were very good too! Enjoy!

On his newest recording he covers The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again". That's pretty brave - but he pulls it off.

First saw Richie at the Blue Lanturn on Stanley St. in Montreal 1965. Blew me away when he did Follow. He played there on a couple of occassion and I had the opportunity of getting to know him a bit.

Incredible performer....incredible man.

I brought him out to headline our Sooke Rive Music Festival on Vancoucer Island in the summer of 2007 and we had an opportunity to sit and talk about the "good old days'. It was such a treat.

Be sure to see him if he comes to your town.

Introduced to Richie by a mutual friend in the east village in NY in 64? 65? 66? She warned me, dutiful fingerpicker that she knew me to be, "he attacks the guitar!" Yep! What a presence he had then, already, and has now, even through the radio. We haven't been in the same room since that 20 minutes or so, forty-odd years ago, but I hope that might happen some time because he was such a nice guy and such a good performer and communicator. He did a show in Bremerton last year- maybe you have to live in the Northwest to understand how improbable that is- but the date was already spoken for to be in a distant place. Sorry I missed it, glad I heard the radio interviews before it.

Go see him, and let us know about your experience.
His recordings, good as they are, cannot match his live performance.

He's got an amazing history. Never seen him live and it's nice to know the real man is anything close to his stage persona. He's always seemed to project a lot of warmth and vigor.

I saw him in Tucson when I played there last, a couple years ago. He was delightful! He's a great performer and singer - pleasant off-stage too. I was really impressed and pleased to meet him.

"accidental anonymity"
I'm betting Dave Barry would think that a good name for a rock band.
Sorry about the thread drift:)
