As in 2007, Linda and I sang 'Sweet Minerva' in the Minerva at the Hull 'Sea Fever' Festival this weekend then stepped outside and remembered Colin.
His was the last name to be read out on the Shellback Roll of Remembrance as they sang the Farewell Shanty in Ruscadors.

It's taken me sometime to actually write this. But as the 2nd anniversay is coming up in a few days I just felt the need to say that when I read this thread 2 yrs ago with tears running down my face I also felt a sense of happiness that Colin was obviously loved by so many friends. I'm so glad that he found his niche in life and that he had you all and that he loved what he was doing.
I was at the funeral and the sheer numbers of people there came as a big shock to me and made me realise that he had a whole new life that I was never a part of. Inevitably his death opened up a whole can of very emotional and mixed memories for me that I thought were buried a long time ago. It's been difficult at times to cope with all this but with help and support from some very special people I'm getting there. Most of you don't know me, but may guess who I am, Keith's is the only name I recognise (yes May & Aug 1982), but I'd like to send thanks to all you special people who knew and loved Colin. I'll be thinking about him especially on Monday..cheers Colin and sorry I stopped being a part of your life..

I'm sorry its taken me a while to get to write this but here it is... How sad I was when I heard the news that Colin had passed away.

The sadness felt was as though he was a member of my own family. He always had a big hug and a smile for me at the many Festivals I've been to and took part in over the last 20 years.

So very missed by all.

I heard a lovely story while at the Wirral festival about stewards in the Green room at Banbury. They kept leaving the place in a mess, but finding it tidied up in the morning - something Colin would always do.. They said it was him coming back to help out...

On Saturday afternoon, during the break in the Wars of the Roses event, there'll be a concert by the Shellbacks which is in memory / a celebration of Colin. He came to every festival, and I just can't imagine this year without him there.

Don't know who thought it was good to crash this thread but I thought people (like me) who reopened it would like an update.

His Mum has coped well. She's taken herself off to Whitby for the week as she has done since Col was small. We got a postcard from her this morning. His house is now on the market and she's got through a lot of the bags etc which came from there - but not all :-) She still talks about the fact he had so many unknown (to her)friends on the folk circuit and is pleased he was so well loved.

I 'rehomed' all but an odd one of the 'Col K permahugs'. The Shellback Sweatshirt she gave me last time we were over is going to America with Micca to be included in the Getaway Silent Auction where it will raise money for a good cause. Thanks to all who wanted one.

He is missed an awful lot by many people (including me) for himself - let alone by a lot of festival organisers. However he's still 'there' as when we need him past conversations/situations come to mind and it helps solve the problems.

To compensate for the crass spam that has brought this thread back up to the top, I'd like to say that i was thinking about Colin the other day.

I was making elderflower cordial, in preparation for the next stage which is elderflower and lemon vodka. The last time I made this was a few years ago. I brought it to Warwick and I remember sharing it with Colin and some of his team. I'll never forget his reaction...

"That's bloody awful!" he grimaced. I found myself laughing as I was making it. Cheers, Col.

Its just over a week since Colin's mum phoned Ruth (my wife) and me with the news. She had only just found his address book. Writing about Col is hard. We met sometime in late 1968 (Nov pos) at Alsager College. Col had just started I had been there a year. Half way through his first year he had joined me and the crew running the college folk club. In 1982 we did a job swop - he was my best man in May I was his in August. We are going to miss getting home from work to find his sat outside our home waiting for for a coffee and my annual folk festival visit to Alcester wil be tinged with sadness. One last bit of information I think Col went to his first fesival at Whitby in 1975.

Colin and I go back a long way, probably more than 30 years, he used to turn up at The Mytholmroyd Dances and help to put out the chairs and tables. He made friends with my children and they still remember him.

Our paths have crossed over the years, he's always been a great support and good friend. In more recent years we have worked together as part of the stewarding team at Whitby, this year he was finally given a Team Leader badge, something he had been joking about for years and which had never happened.(See Bekka's photo)
During the week we shared a meal together and had our daily business meeting, these times I will treasure along with the big hug he gave me on the Friday night. He'd had a great week.

I will miss him at lots of different places and feel enriched by his friendship. A sad loss.

I've just got back from two weeks away from the Mudcat on holiday and then in London and am devastated to hear the news and to have missed the funeral. Colin helped me so much ten years ago when I was organising stewards for the first couple of Saddleworth festivals. His steady common sense was an absolute rock and it was always such a joy to bump into him at subsequent festivals.

I don't know how he managed to feel like a dad to me when he was only four years older, but he did. You don't know what the meaning of anyone's life is until they have gone but now Colin's is clear - you only have to read the postings above. What a wonderful man!

Arived back in Ireland safe and sound although late!

So glad that I came over for Colin, just as he always came over here for us.

Prayers said for him at mass today by neighbours and friends here and late his afternoon they brought around a rose tree to be planted in his memory. (Lovely people here in this valley)

Really delighted to have been able to see so many of Colins friends and ours and only wish it had been under better circumstances.

I first met Col in 2002 at Whitby the year after I had covered for him at his Metropole Venue in 2001 when he was missing for some reason. I got to know him better in subsequent years and at other festivals including Warwick and wonder who will be big enough to fill the many empty spaces he has left.

What a character! Who's going to greet us now when we arrive at the various Fests? Spoke to his mum at the 'WAKE' and she said she had been thinking of a rather smaller occasion, and was not going to attend the slightly bigger 'VENUE'. In the event she was so pleased to see so many people celebrating his life with song, and rest assured it will stand her in good stead in the future knowing that the huge crowd who attended was only a small group compared to the number of people whose lives he had touched.

There were more than 140 of us at the funeral. The Chapel at the crematorium, designed to hold about 70 had people all round the walls,Shellbacks standing in a group on the dias at the frount and one or two people who could not get through the door. The minister said afterwards, he had never heard such singing and what were we all doing on Sunday! Colin's Mum seemed bemused by the crowds but smiled to find her son so loved. The Jacobs Join at the reception was splendid and the singing of the expected high standard. Unfortunately we could not stay very long as we had to put the Hatter (my son) on a train back home to Edinburgh.

When I heard the news I went out into my garden as the sun was setting over the moors in a glorious golden halo, sat under my huge ash tree [the world tree of the ancients] and sang the 'Lament For the Oaks' ~ the farewell song from Heligan for Colin. I just heard...this is so sad..I met Col when he first came to the Getaway, and so I only spent a short time altogether with him. But when we met, I knew we had been friends always, and I always looked forward to seeing him again...One of the great-hearted of this world is gone. I shall sincerely miss my good friend Big Colin. As a steward at a venue with him, I could always rely on his presence to see off any trouble at the door. He always gave me a hug and a kiss whenever we met at a festival. I offer my condolences to his family.

I've had the pleasure of stewarding with Colin at the Metropole at Whitby for the last 9 years or so. He will be sadly missed by all of the team and by the folk community at large. I trust the funeral will be a chance for some of his many friends to celebrate a great man and mark his passing.

We are greatly saddened by the news of Colin's untimely death. We will miss his light-hearted but common-sense approach as he stewarded our Shows at festivals around the country. We will especially remember his help at Warwick a few years ago when the "yoof" got a bit out of hand and one of them attempted to participate in the event - one look at Colin and he fled! (we knew that Colin wouldn't stuff a burning torch in an appropriate place - he didn't!) We also enjoyed his company on the camp sites, and in the food tents, and in the bar, and at the informal and the formal singing sessions...

We believe that Colin found the secret.

I am in total shock, having only just heard the awful news. I would wish to associate myself with all the remarks made so far. Colin always gave the impression that he was having a good time, but also that to see YOU, personally, was the one thing that was needed to make it perfect.

I last saw Colin on the final night of Whitby - during the final concert at the Met I received some bad news and Col, without question or hesitation, simply walked up and quietly enveloped me in one of those safe, loving, reassuring hugs that have been mentioned so feelingly. A hug from Colin was always an experience to be enjoyed, whether consolatory or exuberant; he had an 'all-overish' quality in everything. To stand in the cool of the Met doorway, tucked under one of those slightly sweaty arms, and giggling helplessly at another outrageous remark, was a good place to be.

He was the last person we said goodnight to before leaving the Spa and his final words were, 'See you at a festival somewhere'.

Sadly not, and the world is a smaller place tonight. I raise a glass of good Islay whisky, and wish you safe home, my darling.

Still stunned after hearing the sad news at Fylde. Just couldn't find the appropriate words to say, and still really can't - a fine, cheerful chap who always had time and consideration for everyone (even if he didn't agree with you!). His loss leaves a massive gap on the folkscene.
At least I managed to share a jar and a chat with him at Whitby.

I agree the picture of Col and duckling Mollie is indeed very special. I have been recalling some wonderful times, not the least Col appearing at Saddleworth just in time to rescue me from a muddy fate he thought it was hilarious! Also at Warwick last year outside the Arts Centre -he had been working all day but still stayed into the wee small hours and sang with Hazel Theresa Brian and a few others-it was priceless and so was he.

Since hearing the awful news in the Green Bricks at Hull. I have been unable to fully comprehend this tragic news.
The big guy who I had grown to admire, respect and truly care for is gone.
I have so many memories of Colin. Singing alongside him so often with the Shellbacks, nattering over a glass, walking into a club, a session,a festival and seeing that grin escaping from the beard, watching him as he effortlessly switched his attention from official to folkie to children and getting it just right every time. He was one of the best.
He lived life to the full and helped others to do the same. Let us all remember him and try to emulate him.

Col was a good friend to me, helped me through a difficult year, took me to Ireland, Verna & Ray's for a memorable New Year. I never heard him snore - but then my husband was said to snore and I heard the complaints when he and Col were in the same room to sleep at a festival. Some kind soul remarked on the harmonies.
In July we sat together on the edge of the stage at the Ebenizer Church Hall at Saddleworth facing the singers at the other end of the room for the Songs on Sunday. He would not miss that session even if the Shellbacks were singing elsewhere.
I last saw him finally remembering to eat late on in the day at Warwick,having spent all day sorting out problems. It could be a problem to talk to him for very long as people were always coming up for the famous hug, and with the kids - he would run out of arms.

Col, go and keep Bill and Nick company. We will all be up to join you sometime.

We were not going to be at Whitby this year until serendipity intervened.
Thank goodness it did!
On Thursday at the Met we had a really good chat to Colin and he was as always his friendly attentative self.
We also had a pint together so, thankfully, all the happy memories are in place.

It's always the good guys that go first.

I found out just today and couldn't believe it, especially as I saw him at Whitby last week. I can't help thinking how he had just one more week to go then. Life MUST be lived to the utmost because we might have just one more week left too! We knew Col for a lot of festivals where i've MCed or we've stewarded and he finally made our Whitby week barbecue this year ('cos it was my 60th party as well).

Got the news from Alan Cox (Fylde) yesterday when we were at the Black Bull bender. We sang a farewell to you. Totally stunned.
You were a good man Col - the best & we shared a lot of happy pre and post festival times together. You went too soon and its hard to take in.

We'll miss you so much mate. Nothing more to say.

I bumped into Colin just as I was leaving Whitby, saturday lunchtime by the Yacht Club, and he said what a wonderful week he had had and what lovely people we got to spend our time with. He then listed SO many festivals that he had attended this year that I was quite shocked. I had to say "how do you do it?" He just beamed, and said "see you at Fylde".
We are missing a great-hearted fellow, he was obviously 'in heaven' all the time he spent on the folk scene. On you go, Colin, and we'll follow. In the meantime, I'll miss your amazing smile and big hugs.

Col's mum is still waiting to hear which day she can hold the funeral. As far as she knows it's going to be Thursday or Friday (all being well) and she thinks it's at Skipton Crem.

Well what can anyone say?
I don't think any folk festival will ever be quite the same again.
Since we first met Colin more years ago than I can remember he has been a firm and constant friend,and an extra Uncle to our children
always following their academic progress with great interest.
Like all who knew him we are in shock.
We were at Fylde when we heard and there were many subdued looking folks about with eyes full of disbelief and tears.
A truly great guy,a fantastic roving ammbassador for english folk music and our community who promote support and propogate it.
Colin's passing leaves an unfillable void.
Colin's Mother probably has no notion of the scale and intensity of people's regard for him and we must avoid overwhelming her and the family.
Our hearts go out to his Mum,family and closest friends.

All your beautiful postings are going to be printed off in the morning as I am going to Darwen with Eilleen and Maurice to visit Colin's mum. I spke to her this evening and she has no idea of the regard in which Colin was held and is thinking of a quiet crwemation service as soon as possible. Arrangements can't yet be made as the post mortem is only scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday, after which a death certificate will let the undertaker organise a slot at the crematorium. I must say that this has come as a shock to me. I found out today via a call from Ron Jackson. He was a good folk friend, a lovely friendly and honest man. I will miss his happy smiling face at Warwick and I know the festival comittee will miss him to, as everyone else who knew him will. It seems the best always leave early. The take down at the Wail was rather slow - I just couldn't find the energy. Colin was such a larger than life character, he will leave a big hole. It is going to take quite some time to sink in truly.

I was sat in a Tig's tent talking of life and death with both Tig and Colin just a few weeks ago. As he said, it's what you do with your life that matters, and he did a lot with his. Spreading good will and laughter as he went.

He not only knew how to listen, but he always had the time. He was always very encouraging with the ability to make you feel special.

Colin - you will be sorely missed by all who knew you.

I first met Colin at the Getaway in 2003 and we immediately became life long friends. In the fall of 2004, Col, the perennial bachelor, told me that he had found his true love and was planning to be married sometime the next spring or summer. He asked when I would be coming to England, for he wanted me to sing at his wedding. I was absolutely thrilled. I wrote a special love song for Colin and his bride entitled "Falling In Love".

Unfortunately, our trip to England was going to be too late in the summer for us to participate in the wedding. I telephoned Col in April to let him know that I was including a dedication to them both on my new CD which was nearly finished. He laughed that big booming laugh of his and said, "Christ, mate, don't do that. I just broke up with her." The last time I saw him was when I sang at the Four Fools Folk Club in August 2005. We shared a couple pints and a couple hugs. I miss my friend.

We are devastated by this news. We never knew what his surname was, he was just Colin. When Anne came to Whitby for the first time in 2003 we were at the Met and after the Irish Hoolie were finding it hard to get a taxi. Colin just said "come on jump in to the car" and dropped us back to our digs. In June 2004 we were in Skibbereen at the Skibbereen Singers Club when Jerry was standing at the bar, a pair of giant arms came round him from behind and a voice said "guess who Jerry". Colin of course! What an absolutely brilliant man. This coming on top of Tom Munnelly's death is very hard to take. It seems that its always the good ones.

I'm so glad Linda and I had tea with Colin in Whitby 'Met' last Friday.
At Hull 'Sea Fever' festival yesterday our friend wisely saved the sad news until we'd sung our final set... but in the survivors session we wished him God speed and dedicated 'Sweet Minerva' to him.
I've only known him for 5 years, from Warwick, Saddleworth and Whitby and will have to post my photo of him rescuing Linda from 'Paddleworth' this July.

His huge presence, his all encompassing hugs and his smiling eyes, twinkling, dancing and comforting, will be what I miss.
I will remember singing into the early morning outside the Arts Centre at Warwick '06.
There is a void now.

I met him the first time I went to a Mudcat gathering at the Globe at Guisborough some years ago where he was helping out serving behind the bar. I was feeling fairly out of things as I had never been to anything like it and didn't feel confident enough to join in. I'll always remember and appreciate that he took the trouble to chat and make me feel welcome.

The news shocks us but strangely we are not saddened, like a lot of people on this thred we "knew" Col and it is a sign of his spirit that we immediately missed him when we arrived to pitch the tent at Fylde. We can not feel sad as Col was one of those special people who loved to live life and treated it as a gift. He touched so many people and I am sure he is already organising the best festival ever and is standing at the bar singing heartily with a big grin on his face and that is putting the smile on our faces as only Col could do.

I just hope he had some idea of the esteem he was held in.

Make sure someone knows. Sometimes it's not the folks closest to us, but those on the periphery of our lives, who need to hear what their presence means to us.

Having had the pleasure to meet him at the Getaway with the Shellbacks, I was such a cynic: all that warmth and charm and sparkle couldn't be real, could it? But it was. And I'm glad to hear it and know that it was appreciated.

What I will remember is his sitting in a quiet booth, tired and unwilling to leave the late-night mayhem, watching the proceedings with a gentle smile.

Colin was a great man who enjoyed folk festivals to the full. He will be missed greatly. I still can't believe it. Usually when we arrive at a festival he is the first person we see. Colin was always there with a hug for everyone. I'm sure he'll still be there in spirit.

I had known him from chat, and having met him at both the Getaway and The Yorkshire Gathering. I'm still over on a visit to the UK at the momentand was getting ready to hear the news, which saddened me greatly.

To give a measure of his generosity, when he thought I was coming for the whole Whitby Folk Week and knew that my eventual ride there was still on holiday at that time, he'd offered to pick me up at Manchester airport and give me a ride to the festival. Once there, having come in on Tuesday, I never ran into him in the course of his stewarding duties, and never got a chance to thank him for his generous offer. I was eventually going to send him a PM thanking him during the week once I got out of tents and under a roof again and he'd be home from HIS fests. Then someone made the announcement in one of the singing tent at Wareham and it's like the air went out out of the place, as most of those within knew him and were shocked surprised and saddened.

Rest in Peace, my friend, but don't make the "Mark of Snorro (Sign Of The Z)" TOO loudly. You will be missed by many. And, though a bit too late, "Thank You!"

This is very sad news indeed

Colin was a geat guy, chief steward at very many festivals such as Warwick and Holmfirth

A Shellbacker, an organiser and all round nice guy

Hope he is joining in all the choruses with folkies in the sky

Uk folk will never be the same without this gentleman who was ever a calming influence and a shoulder to cry on! (should I say that!)

I didn't know Colin but on seeing the pictures realsised that I had seem him many times at Fylde. It has certainly made me realise that my reasons for not being able to make Fylde this year are pretty insignificant and we should make the most of every minute here!

Such very sad news.

We have known Colin since mid seventies when we met him at Whitby. Have fond memories of him at dance workshops in the old Church House and at evenings down at the Spa and latterly at The Metropole where he was an institution.

You always new that when walking up to the Met that the first face you would see would be Colin's with his welcoming smile.

Was chatting with him at the final concert at the Met only a few weeks ago, a warm very kind hearted man who always had time for everyone.

gillie and i had a call from beaswax at 2:15ish and since then my head has been in the shed. i feel as if i have lost a brother. colin was always there when you needed him. he was always the first to help. whenever he was giving out hugs i always joined the queue. i've been too busy today to let go but i im now sitting here feeling devastated that i will not hear him again saying "helo daff" as he taps me on the shoulder. colin i love you and will always miss you.

What sad, sad news! I only met Colin at Saltburn this summer and he was so encouraging about my music. Seems unfair that I didn't get the chance to know him better as everyone has been saying such lovely things about him. Still, one of the best legacies you can leave is happy memories for others and it sounds like many, many of you have those from Colin.

I think moira has it right- which explains all these postings.

Colin seemed to be at every festival and got to know everybody attending- and remembered them.

Just a few of the thoughts tumbling round in my head:

-The gleam in his eye when he picked up the hire car for those of us who stayed on after the Shellbacks sang at the Getaway- a VERY large white Buick. Colin loved driving and this was a real treat

-Travelling up through Ayrshire to stay with Hils and on to Edinburgh for the Festival of the Sea

-His initials CEK were the same as my daughter's

Like all of you, we were shocked to hear today of Colin's sudden passing. From working with Colin at recent Warwick Folk Festivals, I knew him to be a warm-hearted gentle giant, always ready with a smile and ready to lend a hand wherever and whenever it was needed. His laid-back manner could not disguise a desire to see a job done well. I remember on the Monday after Warwick this year, Liz & I sat with Colin keeping the tea, coffee and festival feeling flowing in the Moor & Coast tent just a little longer. I know next year I'll miss his distinctive voice over the radio, knowing that his "I'll sort it for you" meant that he would do just that.

Only a few hours after the initial post, and the news still hasn't settled in. And the thread looks like setting a record before day one is out.
But that's indicative of how widely admired and respected Col was. He knew just about everyone, and just about everyone knew him. His massive hugs and his genuine caring for others were legendary, and his experience and inexhaustible fund of common sense I know solved many a crisis both personal and practical. There can't be anybody within the folk fraternity who's not benefited at some time from his friendliness, his welcome, his kindness and generosity of spirit, his unerringly good advice, his words of wisdom, his brilliant sense of humour... and most of us many times over.
Snuffy's own reminiscences could almost be anyone's, so strong was the bond that Col was able to forge at once and so lastingly with folks of all ages and on many levels. Many knew Col better than I, but these last few hours alone I've found innumerable personal memories flooding back. Everything I've said has and will be said more eloquently, I'm convinced, probably even while I'm typing this, so, finally from me:   

To Col - I hope and trust that you departed this life in the manner you would have wished to, peacefully, and I'm sure that wherever you're currently venue-managing will be run better than any earthly festival! RIP mate.

I remember the first time he came in 2003. Everyone said that he gave great hugs. Since I am known far and wide as a first rate hugger, there was anticipation from folks as to who had the best hugs. The competition was fierce, but I must admit I came in second. I still say it was the merry eyes, and the lovely voice and accent. We became fast friends from the first minute, and when he came again (1985, I believe) it was so wonderful to see him. He had a singing voice to die for. I am known for being able to tell a lot about folks fairly quickly. It is a skill that union organizers develope early, and hone over the years. One of the ways we use is to watch someone with children, or small people. Col was so gentle, with eyes that danced, that all kids loved him immediately. They are much better judges of character than us cynical old folks. I especially loved watching him with Maddie in 2003. Maddie, honey, I know this one will hurt for a long while. It hurts me too. Drop me a line if you feel like it and we will share a bit of that hurt together.

I will miss you dearly, big man. You worked your way into my heart, and the hole left in your gettin' away will be a long time passin'.

Colin was a lovely man, kind and generous... as has been said already, his hugs gave warmth and peace. If you had troubles, great or small, he always had time to listen and offer understanding and of course his reliable, kindly, good sense.

Col always seemed to be on the steward team at most of the Festivals I got to over recent years. I'll really miss the friendly welcome and huge grin.

We where at Fylde this weekend and wondered on Friday night when we didn't see his smiling face behind the stewards desk Colin always made Sarah ans Stephen when he came along very welcome, Sarah asked this morning where Colin was at 9.45 and at 11.00am we where told that unfortunately Colin had died the rest of the day was spent not really knowing what to say Eileen and Maurice are as a lot of people will know very upset and a collection was started straight away for Colin mum.
We will all miss him very much.

It's still not really sunk in that I won't see him again. So many good memories of him at work and at play:

• coming out of the Spa Hotel in Saltburn at 06.45, walking up the hill and then chatting outside his B&B for another half hour
• Col defusing a potentially violent situation with his own brand of common sense, humour and savvy between a very drunk and very angry performer and a pugnaciously officious security guard
• listening to him snoring for England in various classrooms and village halls throughout the land
• his unfailing cheerfulness and helpfulness to everyone: he always found time to listen and to let you know he understood
• Col hiding his Chief Steward badge when a late night open air sing at the "Mudpatch Café" at Upton festival brought a complaint from a sleep-deprived lady

• his wonderful way with kids of all ages.

Too many more memories to list them all, but you get the picture. We have lost one of the very, very best, and there is a huge hole in the middle of the British folk world.

Like everyone else, I am shocked beyond measure. My wife and I will especially treasure his visits with us when he was over here for the Getaway and singing at Mystic Seaport. He stayed with us on one of his trips, and was a pure delight.

What a terrible loss!!!

And yesterday, I found out that someone I really enjoyed and admired.. a singer in a black gospel group Ive sung with, just died.
It's a lot to sort out.

Just returning from Fylde having heard the news shortly before George Papavgeris' set at the Legion today.

I've known Colin since I was small and he's been a good friend to me and on more than one occasion has dug me out of a hole and been a shoulder to cry on.

There was a standing joke with Moor & Coast's evening shift, which is normally me and Chris, that we couldn't shut until Colin came in for his supper, some of you lot should be thankful for that (sic) as he was always one of the last in, always too busy enjoying himself!

I'm sure he did what he wanted with his life because as he so rightly put it:
"We are dying from the moment we are born, it is just a case of how long we take to go and what we do when we are here."

Whatever happens, he made an impact on a lot of people's lives, he was well liked, well spoken of and as far as I'm concerned that's the right sort of impact to make.

I'm a skeptic but if there was any way Colin could read all of this I'd just like to say, thanks for the memories!

Just got back from Fyle where the news went round very quickly, and everyone was in shock.

He came to every Saddleworth, and was always the first to offer help and support - and especially to those who needed it the most.

He was a lovely, lovely gentleman - and a gentle man.

I've just talked to Col's Mum. She found him in bed when she went round on Friday morning and thought he was just asleep but a bit cold. It wasn't until she went up later that she realised something was wrong.

There's an autopsy tomorrow and then she'll be able to sort out funeral details. I'll make sure they get on here when I get them.

She seems to be coping and was surprised how fast the news had spread. Keep sending her some of the hugs we all had from Col over the years. A terrible shock to all of us.

I can't quite believe this, I've only met the guy a couple of times (both recently) and we spoke to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago. Col K was my first ever Secret Santa in 2003. He sent me a lot of really interesting books about his area, and some Kendal Mintcake, which I love. I had hoped that one day if I got back over to the UK, I would meet him. He was high up on my list of Mudcatters to meet - now I never will. This is so sad. 58 is too young!

Colin is one of the Mudcatter's my family has had the pleasure of hosting. When the Shellback's came over we invite Colin to stay the night before the other Shellbacks arrived. Due to a change in flights he came into JFK instead of Newark and I couldn't juggle the schedule to pick him up. My husband sent a car from work and I was suddenly on the phone with a car service realizing I didn't know his last name. He was Col K from Mudcat -- in frustration I finally told them his name was Mudcat. He found it just fine.

I'm still in a bit of shock.

Colin was always the big cuddly 'uncle' to all the kids, the one they turned to if Mum and Dad weren't in sight. Maddie is devastated, he's taken care of her since she was tiny and the twins always looked for him at every festival. He may not have had children of his own but the folk kids made him their own wherever he was.

Colin had been a 'Catter for almost 6 years and while many of you knew him at home and some US 'Catters had the great joy of meeting him at a Getaway in 2005, for many like myself Colin was known for his words here. As we all know and have experienced, friendships on the 'Cat are very real and can be very close even we have never met and perhaps never will. "Col K" was a friend to many and was known both "above and below the line" on Mudcat.

I was reminded of something in a recent thread when I read of his death and I went back looking for it. Though I had not participated in the thread myself, I followed it along as we all often do. I include it here as it shows that on the subject of death, Colin had his head screwed on right as he seemed to about most things in life. Whilst I agree LH about some of your "certainties" I have doubts that those who die very young will have time to feel any of them. When one gets older then I hope that we all have the chance to experience them, but I repeat the ONLY certainty in life is DEATH. From the moment we are born we start dieing, its how long that process takes that matters, and what we do in the meantime of course.
Some of us lead very fullfilled lives and will feel/experience many things, others hide away and suffer them rather than live them. I would wish that more people made the effort to live their lives to the full, rather than just exist as some people do.

My Dad's at Fylde and has just rung me to tell me. Utter shock and disbelief.

Colin should have been at Fylde as usual but Maurice and Ilene (you'll know them if uve met them) had pitched Colin's tent for him and were concerned when he didn't show up and his mobile was going straight to answer phone. Concerned, they spoke to Graham Langhorne (dep Chief Steward) who tried to contact Colin but was informed that he'd been found dead in bed on Friday morning, either by a friend or his mother, not certain which.

If I get any more details I'll keep u posted. Thats as much as we know at the moment.

So many happy memories of one of lifes genuinely nice blokes. A great big man with a big heart, always ready with a hug and some dry humour. I just can't believe it. It just wont be the same without him.

Just hope we can all have a bloody good sing at the funeral (no details yet im afraid) and give him a good send off. Hopefully quite a few of Colin's fellow Shellback's will be there...
