Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp From: Jennyldb Date: 02 Sep 07 - 10:31 AM Hiya My Dad's at Fylde and has just rung me to tell me. Utter shock and disbelief. Colin should have been at Fylde as usual but Maurice and Ilene (you'll know them if uve met them) had pitched Colin's tent for him and were concerned when he didn't show up and his mobile was going straight to answer phone. Concerned, they spoke to Graham Langhorne (dep Chief Steward) who tried to contact Colin but was informed that he'd been found dead in bed on Friday morning, either by a friend or his mother, not certain which. If I get any more details I'll keep u posted. Thats as much as we know at the moment. So many happy memories of one of lifes genuinely nice blokes. A great big man with a big heart, always ready with a hug and some dry humour. I just can't believe it. It just wont be the same without him. Just hope we can all have a bloody good sing at the funeral (no details yet im afraid) and give him a good send off. Hopefully quite a few of Colin's fellow Shellback's will be there... :'( Jenny Briggs (Keith Briggs' daughter) |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Sep 07 - 11:00 AM So it IS true then. OK, it must be, but I still can't accept it. Sh***. We've lost more than a few "good guys" to the grim reaper of late I know, but as far as ColK's concerned, well a nicer, more genuine, more big-hearted, more fair-minded, more modest and unassuming, more helpful, truly good guy I've yet to meet anywhere on the (UK) folk scene. Col will be missed big time, no question. If I could only reach a massive hug up there to him... Sincerest condolences to all Col's family and his many many friends from me 'n' th' lass. MM |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Sep 07 - 11:54 AM Colin had been a 'Catter for almost 6 years and while many of you knew him at home and some US 'Catters had the great joy of meeting him at a Getaway in 2005, for many like myself Colin was known for his words here. As we all know and have experienced, friendships on the 'Cat are very real and can be very close even we have never met and perhaps never will. "Col K" was a friend to many and was known both "above and below the line" on Mudcat. I was reminded of something in a recent thread when I read of his death and I went back looking for it. Though I had not participated in the thread myself, I followed it along as we all often do. I include it here as it shows that on the subject of death, Colin had his head screwed on right as he seemed to about most things in life. Below are his own words on a thread entitled "A Death Wish?"...... Subject: RE: BS: A Death Wish? From: Col K - PM Date: 05 Aug 07 - 07:35 PM Lets face it there is ONLY one certain thing in life and that is that the end is DEATH.We are dying from the moment we are born, it is just a case of how long we take to go and what we do when we are here. We live our lives and make choices as we go,these choices may or may not affect our final demise.Does anyone really know how our lifestyle affects things. Some people live simple healthy lives and die young, others abuse their bodies and live to a ripe old age. How we live our life is to a very large extent our choice, how we die is not (apart from suicides). Suicide is a selfish death, it leaves behind so many unanswered questions and so many people who feel guilty at having failed a loved one.do those who have to deal with suicide in the family ever get over it? I don't know. I know I will die one day,I don't want to yet but accept that it will eventually come. I hope that when it does come it comes quickly. Colin AND, after a response from Little Hawk........ Subject: RE: BS: A Death Wish? From: Col K - PM Date: 06 Aug 07 - 05:29 PM Whilst I agree LH about some of your "certainties" I have doubts that those who die very young will have time to feel any of them. When one gets older then I hope that we all have the chance to experience them, but I repeat the ONLY certainty in life is DEATH. From the moment we are born we start dieing, its how long that process takes that matters, and what we do in the meantime of course. Some of us lead very fullfilled lives and will feel/experience many things, others hide away and suffer them rather than live them. I would wish that more people made the effort to live their lives to the full, rather than just exist as some people do. Am I an optimist or a pesimist? I do not know. Colin I don't know either but I am positive, absolutely sure, that Colin lived life "to the full." Rest easy "Col K".... And thanks for being here at the 'Cat from a friend unmet. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:07 PM I went into the chatroom before going onto the threads because I was surprised to find people in there, and they told me the news. I don't know what to say. Shady is devastated....he was so popular with the kids. Just one massive hug really! I'd really like to be at the funeral but it's unlikely. It should be a good one if there is such a thing. Goodbye Col Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Bill D Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:09 PM .....no easy words. He was such a delight to have met at the Getaway...energy and warmth. Reading those posts, I wonder if he knew of some health problem that he didn't share publicly. Many condolences to those who knew him better than I had the opportunity to. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:22 PM Well I don't believe it, sudden or what? Still it's the way we'd all like to go by the sound of it, peacefully in his sleep. Only 58, I just can't comprehend it for the moment. Giok |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:25 PM Colin was always the big cuddly 'uncle' to all the kids, the one they turned to if Mum and Dad weren't in sight. Maddie is devastated, he's taken care of her since she was tiny and the twins always looked for him at every festival. He may not have had children of his own but the folk kids made him their own wherever he was. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Tinker Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:38 PM Colin is one of the Mudcatter's my family has had the pleasure of hosting. When the Shellback's came over we invite Colin to stay the night before the other Shellbacks arrived. Due to a change in flights he came into JFK instead of Newark and I couldn't juggle the schedule to pick him up. My husband sent a car from work and I was suddenly on the phone with a car service realizing I didn't know his last name. He was Col K from Mudcat -- in frustration I finally told them his name was Mudcat. He found it just fine. I'm still in a bit of shock. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Jeri Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:46 PM I read this earlier and still don't know what to say. He was a world-class hugger, but to just be around him was to feel that. He was warm and witty, and his eyes danced with laughter. He had loads of good people as friends. My condolences to all of you, and all of us. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: JennyO Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:51 PM Oh no! I saw the name Colin Kemp earlier on but didn't make the connection. I didn't know his surname. Col K was my first ever Secret Santa in 2003. He sent me a lot of really interesting books about his area, and some Kendal Mintcake, which I love. I had hoped that one day if I got back over to the UK, I would meet him. He was high up on my list of Mudcatters to meet - now I never will. This is so sad. 58 is too young! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Zany Mouse Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:52 PM I'm shocked. The last couple of times I've spoken to him he has complained of severe fatique so I'm wondering if he wasn't feeling well anyway. I hope he just slipped away in his sleep. What a shock for his poor Mum. He will leave a big hole that can't be filled. Col: I hope you manage to steward all those folk festivals up there! Luv Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Banjiman Date: 02 Sep 07 - 01:04 PM I can't quite believe this, I've only met the guy a couple of times (both recently) and we spoke to him on the phone a couple of weeks ago. He has been really helpful in trying to give Wendy a leg up in the folk world. He posted last week that he would try and make Wendy's gig at Fylde on Friday night, I was disappointed he wasn't there......... I feel cheated of a friendship about to start. Condolences to his family and those who knew him well. Paul Arrowsmith |
Subject: RE: Obit: Colin Kemp (Mudcatter Col K) From: Tig Date: 02 Sep 07 - 01:34 PM I've just talked to Col's Mum. She found him in bed when she went round on Friday morning and thought he was just asleep but a bit cold. It wasn't until she went up later that she realised something was wrong. There's an autopsy tomorrow and then she'll be able to sort out funeral details. I'll make sure they get on here when I get them. She seems to be coping and was surprised how fast the news had spread. Keep sending her some of the hugs we all had from Col over the years. A terrible shock to all of us. Tig |
