Subject: Folklore: Who remembers Elton Hayes ?

I remember a singer called Elto Hayes who sang "to a small guitar" on BBC Light Programme a long time ago. It may have been one of those Movie adaptations on radio of a Robin Hood film where he sang as Alan a'Dale, but I think he may have had a programme of his own also. I seem to remember him singing "The Owl and the Pusseycat" on one show but it must have been in the late 40s early 50s ?
What was his story, was he ever part of the British Folk Scene?

Here's an entry in the Telegraph, which has a fair bit of information about him: Elton Hayes (where you'll find that he was Alan-a-Dale in a 1952 Disney film, The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men). There are other web entries for him too.

I was watching him on TV not that long ago singing the Owl and the Pussycat in some Best of... or Favourite... program I think.

Mick

Well I became interested in folk music having heard Elton Hayes (and Shirley Abicaire) on children's faourites as a child. Not all strictly folk music I suppose but it had that sound that's always appealed. Michael Holliday (hardly folk music at all) sang some folkish stuff which again grabbed my interest.

We had a thread about him a few years back, round about the time he died.

Never part of the "folk scene", but he had a very appealing way with a song. He shouldn't be forgotten, and I don't think he will be - his version of the Owl and the Pussycat works today as well as it ever did.

DocJ, Norman Milne aka Michael Holliday wasn't bad at all. I do remember his song "The story of my life" when I was young. He had a nice voice although no folk music. Thanks for thinking of him.

Thanks Mick, and Norman.
Lots of info on Elton Hayes and lots of memories of listening to Radio shows like "In town to-night" with my grandad back in the 40s and 50s. Had no idea he was (Hayes) such a well known and often heard artist. Now , with my new "Broadband" connection I was easily able to acsess all links , both old Forum and Other.
Thanks again

"In Town Tonight",Peter Butterworth and Elton Hayes, all memories of my childhood.
I can't remember what song it was by Elton Hayes but it had a line in it which is still with me:'I'll always find you,no matter where you may be'.
Anybody know what that was?

Yes,and thanks for the memories.

David
