Subject: What is your favorite band name?
From: GUEST,Texas Guest

Well, I haven't given this a ton of thought but I saw a thread posted today by the, "Flying Chaucers," and I thought - wow,
what a great name for a band - so my lot is is cast with the Flying Chaucers; but, what is your favorite band name; and yes, you can list more than one. In fact, you can even put forth a band name that no one has ever used but you think would be a great name.
I always though "Truncheon" would be a great name for a metal band. Have fun. Cheers.

When I lived in Liverpool in the 60's, the Liverpool Echo ran a competition for names for a pop group, can't remember what won but most unforgettable was 'Snotty and the Nosepickers!'

I badly wanted to call a band I was in Lemming Moran and the Tarts, but I was voted down.

A short-lived effort (but I did like the name) was Macswel's Friends .. you'd have to have met Macswel to appreciate the name. Macswel was a soft toy made by my Mum, with heaps of character.

I wouldn't call it a favourite but in the '80s we were in a band called...

Jack Door and The Ravens

and at school, when looking for a 'strong' name for our band we were very nearly...

Caustic Soda and the Bleach Boys

The thread Alice refreshed has the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons, I'm pleased to report. The first all female rock group in Oz (in the early 70s) that I heard about was called "Hen's Teeth"; unfortunately they didn't last very long. A couple of years later another all female rock group formed in Sydney, called "The Ovarian Sisters"; I think they lasted 4-5 years.

And, in the late 70s, I occasionally played (and sang the occasional shanty) with "Rum, Buggery and the Lash!" who did a great version of "Running Bare".

Cheers, Rowan

Bands I've been in:

Needeep

Hamstrung Bones

The latter was after a joke on (I think) Round the Horne referring to Lord Snowdon as Anthony Hamstrung-Bones.

A fave name I know is the Blues band - Cliff Rescue & the Helicopters

Brent Ford and The Nylons were in Birmingham in the 70s. And I liked the sound of Ricky Cool and The Icebergs (presume it's the same person now touring as Ricy Cool and The Hoola Boola Boys.

Bamsquilverboozled was a pretty good name, we thought! Rapsquillion is easier though these days!

Hi Georgie - Nick Pallett from Principal Edwards (they later shortened their name to that) was a mate of mine at university and he there had a band called the Nathaniel Clackthorne All-Rubber Band.

One of my uni bands was Shaft and the Rocks (the lead singer was a mining engineer, see?) and one of my school bands was the Pink Perves. Another uni one was Wandering Hands and the Jailbait.

I am also the oldest surviving member of Roger the Chorister.

More currently, yes, I too think that the Flying Chaucers is a great name, and there is a snigger snogwriter female trio from somewhere near Cambridge called "Deadly Lampshade".

I liked the in-your-face element of Courtney Love's band name "Hole", and also "the Slits".

"The Chosen Few" is a pretty good name too.

Not necessarily a favorite name, but definitely got attention was the first band I was ever part of:

I think that The Rolling Stones was a hell of a good band name. Inspired. Nice that they also turned out to be a hell of a good band.

Some other band names I think are quite good:

The Band       (The essence of simplicity! Smart.)
The Mothers of Invention      (although I did not like them much)
The Grateful Dead          (brilliant name!)
The Viletones
Stark Naked and the Fleshtones (a pun based on "The Viletones")
Sex Pistols
The Velvet Underground
The Clash
Voidoids
Cardboard Brains
Dead Kennedys (utterly tasteless...but very effective for its purpose)
Bunchafuckingoofs (the most honestly named band in the history of punk rock!)
Souxie and the Banshees
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
King Crimson
Meat Loaf (Conveys a lot, doesn't it? Or maybe not? Heh!)

I put a lot of punk bands on the list, because I find their names hysterically amusing. It's very odd to base a musical movement on total loathing for self, society and others...but they somehow did it. Quite extraordinary in retrospect.

Any idea if Corned Beef and Couscous is still around? A Google search finds one reference only, in a concert series in Tucson in 1996, so it seems most unlikely. But if you knew my family you would know we really NEED these guys!!

I see that it's not only folk/traditional bands listed here. Among my favorites include

Gypsy Guerilla Band (They claim to play "hit and run music".)
Cross Rogues
Strawberry Alarm Clock (essence of the Sixties)
Iron Butterfly
1910 Fruitgum Company (from a wrapper they found in the attic)
Faster Pussycat (from the film "Faster Pussycat Kill Kill")

(It's 3:30 in the morning, so I'm lucky if my brain works at all!)

Hypnotic Clambake

The String Cheese Incident

Gan Ainm (many have used it)

The (Sun Ra) Arkestra

The Incredible String Band

Me First and the Gimme Gimme's

Jefferson Airplane (shortened from a fictitious bluesman named Blind Lemon Jefferson Airplane)

Finally, I've always wanted to name a band Public Domain so that we could collect royalties from everyone who had ever played any public domain material!    :-)

A local band as the iffy name of Punch Judy.

I can't say I care for the goup, but they likely had hopeful guys show up, only to be disappointed in some way: Bare Naked Ladies.

Leatherwolf~'cause it's such a great Heavy Metal band name for a fantastic Metal band (triple axe attack)

Long Jon and the Underthings...but I've never been able to get my partner Jon (who is short, of course) to start the band.

Thought of this about 20 years ago when we were in a singing competition, the second Harmony Sweepstakes, against "the Slips" and (I think) "the Girdles."

Lunch at the dump.
That was a bluegrass band here a few years ago. They all met at the landfill and found out that they all made music, so they formed a band. Too bad they broke up.

Hi Texas, some unused (in my world) band names for you...Cardboard Mountaineers, Chicken-in-a-Basket, Warp Dressers and Twisters,...and some used ones...Monk Brown and his Dirty Habits, Pineapple Nine (particularly creative this one:they sang English Folk, did not do any numbers about pineapples, and there were only three of them...they hoped their audiences would be sypathetic on account of six band members not having bothered to turn out... tho' indifferent musically, they were quite droll)

A now-defunct Celtic group in Portland, which had at least 2 different incarnations with variations in the band's personnel, was "Howling Gael."   I love that name.

And we have a great bluesman here named Paul DeLay. While Paul was in the slammer on a drug rap -- I know, I know, hard to imagine that happening with a blues musician -- the band performed under the name "No DeLay."

The Electric Prunes

Climax
In the Sixties, most of us wouldn't have understood the implication. I've been listening to some "bubblegum" songs and realized the lyrics were not as sugar and spice as whe thought. Oh my...)

Lemon Pipers
Speaking of bubblegum, here are some of the fanciful words that, when you take another look...)
"Take a trip on my pogo stick
Bounce up and down, do a trick
I'll play a beat on your pumpkin drum
And we'll have fun in the sun"
Now I KNOW how naive my friends and I were! How we managed to stay so sweet 'n' innocent in the craziness of the Sixties I'll never know.

Women Wrestling in Mud (another that got complaints from disappointed punters)
