Greetings, 'Catters -

Bad news / good news / gooder news

The bad news is that there will be no sea music festival this year at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

The good news is that there will be a festival at the park, on Saturday, September 22nd, 11am-5pm, a Tugboat Festival, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the steam tug Hercules. Free admission.

The gooder news: Among the many activities, there will be music performed by three outstanding folk singers; Bob Bossin, Hank Cramer, and David LoVine, performing traditional and contemporary songs of tug & steam vessels, and their times. David LoVine has written a new song about the Hercules, which he will debut at the fest.

Sorry & sad to hear that they've decided to fore go the weekend long sea music festival for a one day Tug festival. I hope they rethink their position for any future festivals. I thoroughly enjoyed the festival I witnessed & performed at a number of years back & can't for the life of me see where this would be considered a step forward. The line-up looks terrific (of course I would say that, wouldn't I, having suggested one of the performers), and it sounds as though you are going to make some tasty lemonade with those lemons. I'll try to be there.

I have a tugboat song if anyone wants it..about Columbia River...I wish I could make it..I think we should put together a CD of tugboat songs..remember it was my idea...I wish someone would write a song about the person who inspired the Tugboat Annie stories..Mrs. Ann? Fossand?? who started Foss tugboats. There are some great B.C. tugboat songs, all of which escape me at the moment. mg

Oh dear. Well as a consolation you can come to the Oct 27 maritime day in Ilwaco WA and I think there is a concert in the evening in Astoria. Some local and regional singers I believe. I have no official pronouncement from Parks Dpt but heard it yesterday from the horse's mouth. mg

Reporting back on the event:

The tugboat festival wasn't like Festival of the Sea, but then it didn't have to be. It was a homey if low-key event, and the music budget was put to extremely good use with Hank Cramer, David LoVine and Bob Bossin each bringing something unique to the subject of the working vessels of the oceans, ports, and inland waterways.

Thank YOU, Clairebear, for recommending Bob Bossin to me after I posted a thread seeking singers of tugboat songs. Bob was just what the doctor....er....ranger ordered. I thought the music went really well, too. Homey is a good way to describe it. Each singer did three sets apiece, one 45-minute set at the demo area just inside the pier entrance, and two 30-minute sets onboard the 1890 ferryboat Eureka. Bob did a concert the next day in Berkeley. Hank brought two singers with him, Rick Dougherty, of The Kingston Trio, and (first name escapes me....Brian?) Matthews, an English chantey singer now living in Hank's home state of Washington.

Many thanks to Cal Herrmann, who volunteered as sound engineer, and to Ed Sherry for loaning his sound equipment. Also, to Charlie Fenton, ace contra-dance caller and all-arounf bay area folk music good guy, for emceeing at the demo area stage. Thanks to Mudcatter and volunteer Melani, a fine chantey singer in her own right, and the other volunteers who did grunt work (moving chairs, arranging for pizza for singers and volunteers), and to volunteer coordinator Terry Dorman. Lastly, but not least, thanks to all who come to the pier and support our efforts to preserve our maritime heritage, and support our music programs.

Remember: Without music in our lives...dancing would look really silly.
