And for the US fans, the National Endowment for the Arts' national heritage folk awards concert will be taking place on September 20 at Strathmore in the Washington suburbs. Info about the winners is posted here. Ticket info is here. According to the Website, the free tickets are "sold out," but stand-by seating is probably available and there may even be tickets through the usual backdoor channels.

At the BBC Folk Awards (if amid all the scandal and screw-ups they manage the happen), the Horizon Award for relative newcomers in accordance with its trend of being a year behind, ought to single out Mawkin (who should have got it last year).

This is the only category I'm interested in really. But on the basis of album releases so far, I'll back Ruth's assessment of Martin Simpson's Prodigal Son as hard to beat for album of the year. Though there will, of course, be an avalanche of releases shortly for the benefit of Smoothops 'recommended list' for the attention-span-challenged jurors.

As for Best Traditional Track I'd imagine something from James Blunt, passed off as Napoleonic War officer-class ditty. Though I'd be interested to see something from the Olivier production of War Horse currently in rehearsal gets through . . . nominated for Best Original Song, preferably.

Fretless, if you hear of any radio broadcast or internet simulcast of the NEA awards, please let us know. These awards actually have meaning and do some good for the artist and I wish more people were aware of them.

Ya never know, SmoothOps MIGHT wake up and send someone to see this production.( I'm not holding my breath though.

For those who don't know, John Tams is the songmaker for the production

Well, Captain Blount covered Wild World at Live Earth. Its writer had of course changed his name since he wrote it, so that probably counts as "trad" using one of the various definition John Leonard used while attempting to dig himself out of last year's hole...

the Folk Awards simply must go ahead or else no artists will know when to release their albums!

The Spinners for a life-time achievement Award.

Crucible for something or other because I really enjoy their music.

Horizon Award : Jackie Oates, Mawkin, Lisa Knapp, Bella Hardy (trust me on this one...she'll likely get very big very fast)
Album of the Year : Martin Simpson, Kate Rusby, June Tabor

the Folk Awards simply must go ahead or else no artists will know when to release their albums!

I know of three big folk releases scheduled for March 2008 - the new Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman and Jim Moray albums - so perhaps people have moved on and are going for the Mercury awards instead!

I'd like to see 'The Bairns' by Rachel Unthank and the Winterset nominated (at least!) for best album. Belinda O'Hooley's 'Blackbird' should get a nomination for best original song.

Ron, My understanding is that the U.S. concert will be rebroadcast on WAMU FM in the Washington area over Thanksgiving weekend. I included a few more details in a PM.

"the Folk Awards simply must go ahead or else no artists will know when to release their albums!"

You ARE joking of course...? I'm sure alot of musician don't schedule the release of a new album around which award show is coming up, to some, these shows simply aren't important. It seems to me that in many cases awards seem more important to the singer or group's management than to the artist(s) themselves.

Last Orders for Horizon

Or have they already won it?

Last Orders

Nah, it's got to be somebody who didn't win the YFA.
Not the band that won it last year!
That would be far too simple, though it has happened with Uiscedwr.
So very well-placed as Horizon contenders are Mawkin, Jackie Oates, Bella Hardy and the Askew sisters.
Probably in that order in consecutive years.

Given the BBC's having a good look at its own practises, is a |Folk Award very likely in the immediate future? It seems problematic, never mind the kerfuffle over last year's procedures.

Shibboleth

How do you know? Their website routinely crashes my browser which makes me fear they are crap.

I was trying to compose something witty to say about Greg's observation on the lines that this particular shibboleth was connected not to linguistic distinction among Semite tribes but to determine whether living on Dartmoor would explain a rather idiosyncratic interpretation of what is a 'Traditional Track'.

But if Les actually got on their site, maybe he knows better than the rest of us.

I am with Ruth (so far) on album of the year. I said when Martin Simpson's Prodigal Son came out that it would take an awful lot to beat it, and nothing has come along yet.
