Well, I'm back from Boston, and here's what the man said.After nearly two
hours of manual manipulation of my larynx, and squeezing my throat like he
was trying to throttle me, and asking me to make a myriad of sounds, he
said, there is a voice there, and it needs three things to bring it out.
1.Patience
2.Determination
3.Confidence

Also, to continue working with my therapist in Portland, and regular
sessions with Dr. Roediger, my ENT, and with Dr. Shapshay, the surgeon, to
be sure the cancer does not return.

The exercises he gave me are silly sounding, and boring. Some of them are
painful, which goes against my nature. No pain, no pain is my motto. But, I
know Jacqui is going to crack the whip and make me miserable if I don't keep
up with my end of the deal.
He also said that I probably shouldn't expect a call for me to replace Pavarotti.

Well, for what it's worth, I thought your voice definitely sounded clearer and stronger when I saw you at Old Songs. This sounds fairly positive to me. Keep up the PITA exercises and do everything Jacqui tells you to like a good old duffer ( or at least pretend to).

What are the things you want to sing about-- the things that matter to you? If you focus on the fact that the silly exercises will get you able to do that, that may help you value the time spent doing them.

That's wonderful news, Kendall! We know you have the perseverance and confidence, I hope, now for the patience!

My surgeon told me it would take three years at least to lose the extra weight I put on when I was so sick and couldn't exercise. It has taken me until now to remember how to breath deeply enough to get enough O2 without a tank AND get my body in good enough condition to start exercising. So...maybe we can hook up as "buddies"...you make the silly sounds while I walk it off!**bg**

Jacqui as a wife going throught the "I dont care if it is sore do the damned physio" routine you have my symapthy. I have found a cattle prod or bull whip is a great help :) I wid get Granny Dom tae lend ye hers but she is rather busy at the moment so handcuff him to a chair refusing to let him go till the exercises are done.

I knowexactly the strange sounds you are on about. I had to do a whole raft of exercises when my voice went earlier this year. The cats thought I was most odd, let alone Jon!! Nevertheless I persevered and managed to sing a bit this summer. Perhaps we could duet? keep it up.

Rap - if I wore that lot I'd look like an overful bin bag! I do have the cat o' nine tails we got at our wedding reception however.......

Ihave to be very careful with this - if I push too hard the stubborn old bugger just refuses to do anything (Taurean trait). I shall just have to be crafty and get some help from Ladies of Maine, who I know will be only too pleased to get involved.

I've set the Getaway as a target for Kendall to get some voice back and am hoping that, with work at home and his visits to his wonderful speech therapist (female and fell for his charms first time out!), that the target is doable.

Kendall, I don't know you, but Sinsull sent me one of your tapes as a Secret Santa gift. It's in my car and I play it quite a bit. And your recording of "Rolling Home" is in my computer, courtesy of Rose, the Record Lady. I'm going to get my band to do it. Anyway, it would be a shame for that voice to be stilled. So do you exercises, because I'm retired now, and having gone to a police academy run by the NJ State Police, I haved an idea of how to push someone.

It's a hell of a roller coaster, Captain. But we, me and probably you too, ride it, screaming all the way, and learning to like the positives of it quite a bit when we can. Like single malt scotch, the taste can be acquired. Still the long dips can be lonesome at best. Just be glad you see a light in your tunnel, and that there is a way to, hopefully, rehab it for you. And a decent community is here for you.

We just managed to demolish three lobsters each using only our hands and teeth.

They were good as well.

Not sure whether that will have any effect on Kendall's voice but we have more of the crustaceans to continue the treatment.

Glad to hear it, Kendall. Pavarotti's gone, but his warm-up technique is still a good one - sing softly and gently through the day prior to a concert - relaxes and strengthens the throat muscles gently, so he could reach all those high notes effortlessly!

Now, if you want to get the rest of that voice out, stick a couple fingers down your throat (best cover 'em with Vaseline first). Fish around down there until you grab onto it and pull 'er up! If it isn't your voice, toss 'er back -- this is catch and release stuff.

Alternately, go down to one of them touristy-type shops (they're all over Maine, so you won't have to go far) and get one of those tiny little lobster traps they sell as earrings or ornaments for the Christmas tree. Tie a good stout string to it, bait 'er up, and swallow it (tie the free end of the string around your ear). Ever so often, haul 'er in and see what you've got.

Now these are called "alternative medical therapies" and they're pretty much ignored by mainstream medicine. So don't tell your doctor.

A few days ago, I was walking the dog and a neighbor drove by. He stopped to exchange pleasantries, and damned if I wasn't able to speak to him!
Had my weekly session with my speech therapist yesterday, and she was blown away by the progress I've made in one week.

Things are looking up, and I just might be able to do something at the Getaway. Jacqui wants us to do Phoebe Snow with her doing the singing and me doing the recitation.

Well...we kind of had this good feeling when at Old Songs this year that things were looking up and sounding better for you. It is so wonderful to hear that good things are happening. Keep on track with your rehab stuff....we're sure Jacqui will keep you on track with the required regiments of therapy. Kendall have we got a story for you about Portsmouth....OH MY what have I done now. Thankfully we have strong women supporting us. Joanne almost had me encarcerated for this one.....and without Scotch and all it was done.
We have set down a bit on the singing for a few weeks. Did our last
chantey/sea ballard event last weekend for the Clam Fest.....attended by almost 2,000 people this year. Lots of fun.
Anyway...worked on the Adventure today in the rain......just getting in and trying to dry out. Glad things are progressing well for you. I can't believe that I read Mary turned 70 this past week. She does amazingly well for her age. Best to Jacqui and you.

I'll never forget a dinner at my sister's house about 3-4 years ago. My youngest nephew (then about 6-7 years old), who has fairly bad manners in all respects, reached for something across the table and received a gentle reminder tap on the knuckles with his grandfather's fork. My sisters and I all quickly drew our hands off the table and then looked at each other and started laughing. The funny thing was, I'd never actually gotten the corrective tap as a child so I have no idea why I reacted to it. :-)
