Subject: BS: Gigs in Scotland?
From: Trevor Thomas
Date: 07 Sep 07 - 12:03 PM

I don't know whether this sort of query is music or non music, or what.

From the 4th to the 14th October, I am doing a small tour in Scotland with an American singer/guitarist/fiddle player. Now, we are only looking to cover expenses, but seeing as he's flying over from America, the expenses take a bit more covering. While we have got some gigs at the weekends either end, we've not got much for the weekdays. Does anyone know of anywhere in the Highlands (actually, realistically anywhere in Scotland or within a day's drive) where we might be able to get a gig on a week night? We're not terribly expensive and we promise not to bring a drummer.

Any suggestions (well, polite ones, anyway) gratefully received.

Trev

It was my experience in Scotland that gigs have to be set up well in advance.

Thanks Kendall, I know it's probably a bit late in the day, and a bit of a long shot, but if there's anyone who knows anywhere we might try, I'd still really appreciate it.

This is definitely a legitimate music query, so I've bumped you up to the Music Section. Good luck, I envy you!

You could alway contact clubs and offer a support spot for free, usualy 20mins or so, and hope to sell some CDs.
Consider the trip as a promo for your next one and set up gigs while you are here. Thats if you are going to return.
Best of luck.

Kendall is right, gigs in Scotland at folk clubs usually have to be set up well in advance - almost a year in advance, really. But the Dunfermline Folk Club comes to mind, and possibly the Kelso Folk Club. They are a little more informal and will sometimes have a guest on what is usually a singers night and will pass the hat. A google should provide contact info. Good luck!

Some of the links might lead to something - found on google:

Music in Scotland;

UK gig guide;

Glasgow Gig Directory from gig guide;

there are a bunch more if you google "music venues in Scotland."

Good luck!

You could try Montrose FC they meet fortnighly but will have guests lined up so you would get 2 or 3 songs.
Glen Farg is similar.

Another is to try the Taybank hotel and its sister the Pitcairn Green Hotel both have a thriving music scene. Search under Taybank for info.

Try the Royal Oak in Infirmary Street Edinburgh.(Best folk pub in the city) Even if you don't get a gig they know a lot about the locality
All the best
Bill
PS They have a web site

Thanks very much to everyone for all their helpful suggestions. I really appreciate it, and have passed it on to the Singer.

Sometimes this forum gets criticised because there's a lot of sniping and bickering, and to be honest, there probably is. My personal experince, however, is that the Mudcat 'community' are very generous when it comes to help and advice. Thanks Kendall, Katlaughing, Maryrrf, Mad Jock and Bill the Sound!

I'm really looking forward to this one - I've not been up there for years.

Thanks again, Trev

I'd love to Mad Jock - My sister's in-laws live in Blairgowrie. However, we'll be playing at the Cluny in Newcastle that night. If only it were the week after, we'd happily do it. Ah well, these things happen.
