And sometimes I and others refer to it as "The Starbuck Song". In another posting, I'll give the link for my site at Motagator, where you can listen to it, as well as a few other songs I sing. Probably not the best lyrics for a finishing song but it's a got a great chorus for the audience to belt out. I think everyone goes home happy if they've had a good sing-song at the end of the evening. |

I'll Be Seeing You (No, not all my gigs are for "folk" audiences.) At gigs for Jewish audiences, my standard closure song is a medley of "Havenu Shalom Aleichem," "Shalom Chaverim," and "Lo Yisa Goy." |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST Date: 09 Sep 07 - 01:41 PM Albert, Yes "Wild Mountian Thyme" was a favourite closing song as far back as the Adelphi Folk Club, Swansea in the mid-60's Since then it has been featured in The Afan Valley Folk Club, Port Talbot; The Swansea University Folk Club and The Colliers Folk Club, Neath. The Swansea Folk Club in the 70's also adopted it. I well remember Lynne Gent singing it at The Valley Folk Club. She has a wonderful voice which was admirably suited to such a beautiful song. Otherwise I finish with an old-timey version of "Show me the way to go home" with extra verses. Not original, but the punters can all join in and go home feeling happy. This can be a challenge, since (a) there are lots of good traditional songs I love that work equally well and (b) not every song can be the last song. David Holt was trying to decide how to finish off a concert (or maybe what to play for an encore) at a concert I went to 20 years ago, and someone in the audience suggested Meeting Is Over. It was an excellent suggestion. |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: PoppaGator Date: 25 Jan 11 - 12:06 PM Dave Van Ronk's "Last Call": I haven't done it lately; it is a 20th century composition written in a very old-fashioned style that demands to be sung unaccompanied or not at all. The story is that Dave, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell were drinking together late into the night, and this song's lyrics were found in the morning in such nearly-indecipherable script writing that no one's handwriting could be recognized. The other two apparently let DVR have it; perhaps he wrote the melody (or "chose" it from the traditional airs in his memory bank). My usual closing number since August 2005 has been "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans." I worked up my arrancement while in Katrina exile, badly missing New Orleans myself at the time. |

If moderate energy or a laid back bunch, lately we close with "We Are Family" and we get the audience clapping. Most of our audiences tend to be of the latter two types because we do mainly retirement residence gigs. I think the lyrics in general and the reference in "We Are Family" to "...all my sisters..." works well for us on several levels: ~we're an all-women quartet; ~we have mostly female audiences, at least 10:1 in our RR gigs (both due to death rates by gender and, pardon the stereotyping, often the hockey/ball game starts at the same time as we do). ~our audiences have told us they identify with us: we remind them of their past singing days, very often with other women or family; ~our style uses constant eye contact with audience members while conveying the emotions behind the storylines of the songs, which creates a depth of contact that our audiences may miss sharing with their own family or close friends, so the words match our behaviour. Geez, after articulating all this at once, it reinforces why we enjoy this type of gig so much. |

Soon the morning sun will rise and dawn will bathe the sky,The melody is very beautiful, and the only recording of it I know of (aside from the YouTube video Tim linked to) is on Old Songs & Bothy Ballads (Fifesing 4) - Nick-knack on the Waa, a CD of traditional folk songs. This album also has one of my favorite (and largely unknown) traditional Scottish songs The Gallant Forty Twa (not the more famous song of the same name). |
