Big differance between duct tape and gaffers tape. At least here.

duct tape, also called, 100 mile an hour tape = $1.98 roll, sticks to about everything, will pull paint from wall, and leaves glue all over the place, sticky nasty smears. The handymans friend. Also gets real ugly on the couch after about six months. It sort of slides all over. Yuck.

Gaffers tape = $12.50 a roll. Sticks reasonably well, but when pulled up, leaves no marks. Leave no messy glue behind.

So, how does the glue work in the UK? Big mess or clean? If it's clean and cheep, you got a good deal.

Friend o' mine was born with one eye lid. When he was circumsized they saved it and grafted it on his eye with duct tape. He's fine now; just a bit cockeyed.

In the Canadian Army, it is called Gun Tape, and comes in an olice drab colour. Not actually used on guns, to my certain knowledge, but for almost everything else.

About ten years ago, the supply system made it available in black, brown, yellow, green blue and red. Very useful for all sorts of purposes, but purists wil still argue that it isn't proper gun tape.

Gee! I don't know how this is going to be received, but it is so funny to me I felt I had to pass it on.

My son knows next to nothing about Mudcats except wr're having guests. He is 22 years old and he and I have a very open, very free relationship. We're good friends. (Sometimes this is not great) All this in explanation of what is to follow.

My son recently broke up with a woman (she is 31) and he is feeling kind of low. His first real heartbreak. I asked him if he were going to start seeing other women again. He said he was going to start seeing lots of woman. I told him he better buy a lot of condoms. That he could buy them in a box of 20. He said he couldn't afford it (he supports himself), that he was going to get some aluminum foil and duct tape. He said that should last for a while.

I love him. annap

Smart man, Annap! Had the same kind of relationship with my son, who is now 29!

Did anybody see the cartoon "Ziggy", today? Not one my favourites to watch for, but today's was cute. ziggy is staring at his cat who is plastered against the wall, with broad strips of tape across his body, arms and legs, while Ziggy observes, "The mice must've been in the duct tape, again!"

Peterp - not at all the same as gaffer tape, that's the thick stuff for sticking leads to stage floors - duck (sic) tape is for keeping rain out of Citroën 2cvs!!!

more words to joel hickersons song:

Why dont they make diapers of a bright yellow color Why dont they make diapers of a bright golden hue whydont they make diapers of a bright yellow color Or green when the baby comes down with the flu

We lined his diapers with paper towels To catch all the nasties when he moved his bowels But soon we discovered it just wouldn't do He screamed and he squirmed and it shot right on through

Love Red Green! The man is so warped...and yet...ya know, some of those things he builds look like they might work....

BTW, Mikal--back when I still had my little Aeronca Chief, I had a small hangar accident--scraped the fabric off the tip of one wing. My mechanic and I slapped some duct tape across it and I flew the next 50 hours that way--worked great. (Don't know about fighter planes, though--that might be kinda scary at those speeds! and yeah, I know they call it 100 MPH tape, but still....)

My hubby swears by Mentholatum to take the sticky residue off. Be aware: he says Vicks doesn't work nearly as well! This is a man who claims that "you never have enough clamps (or duct tape)" and has cartons of both in his workshop.

And my brother, the auto mechanic, has kept any number of family vehicles on the road with that gray shiny stuff.

When you're sittin' there and lookin' at a pile of stuff to mend,
And the warranty on everything has just come to an end,
Don't go push the panic button 'cause you know you've got a friend,
In Duct Tape!

When the diaper pins are missing and your mothers comin' by
And the lamp cords frayed so badly you're afraid it's gonna fry,
There's no need for you to worry. You can fix it if you try
With Duct Tape!

It's your faithful, true companion when the going's gettin' rough.
Though it looks real thin and flimsy, you will find it's very tough.
You can mend it in a jiffy. It'll hold up well enough,
With Duct Tape!

I was seventy miles up the Marrowijne River in Suriname, in a dugout canoe (yes, Catspaw, I had a paddle). The only boats on the water were dugout canoes like ours, made from hollowed out tree trunks, fifteen to thirty feet long. The bows were carved with a graceful upswept curve. The boatmen used intricately carved paddles with blades painted in bright, geometric figures.

Heavy and difficult to maneuver, the Djuka people could pilot these canoes through rapids that would give an experienced whitewater canoer pause. Each village along the river was fronted by a bare, muddy beach with a few canoes pulled up on shore. This was pretty remote country, no roads, no electricity, no touch with the central government, just a traditional culture living almost exactly as they had in the three centuries since they had originally settled there.

I was delighted that I had made it to a setting that was like "Green Mansions", on a jungle river, jaguars, macaws,I felt as though I had stepped into one of the National Geographic magazines I used to love to read, curled up on the window seat at home.

Somewhere in the middle of a reverie like that I noticed that one of the boats on shore had apparently smashed into a rock coming through a rapids a while back and the bow had been broken off. The repair had been made using, you guessed it, Duct Tape.

I believe that Troll is quoting part of "Duct Tape", by my neighbor Peter Krug, who also wrote "Woman with a Chainsaw" and "The Packrat Philosophy". The song describes many of the uses for duct tape mentioned here, and finishes the story of the singer's repair of a damaged interstellar vehicle, thus sending duct tape's fame to the stars

He threatens to duct tape her in a chair and feed her Cherrios with a spoon to keep her away from dealers.

Peter Krug, in Guerneville, CA, has an excellent song called Duct Tape. The chorus is:

Duct Tape, what would we do without Duct Tape, couldn't muddle through without Duct Tape, it's all the rage

Duct Tape, couldn't get by without Duct Tape, praise it to the skies It's the number one miracle of our modern age

And has four verses involving emergency repair situations, including a crashed space ship.

To contact Peter, he's Peter Krug, 17926 Santa Rosa Road, Guerneville, CA 95446.

Know of any others? Send us an e-mail with the specifics.

Subject: Lyr Add: BIGAMOUS DUCT TAPE SLUT (Ian Rowe)
From: Barbara
Date: 25 Feb 00 - 07:30 AM

Hi, Sadie, I know a 4 pt round (and may have mentioned it above; I didn't read the whole thread again when annap refreshed it. Lou Matthiesson, I think the Alaska songwriter's name is.
This showed up in my email a couple days ago:

Bigamous Duct Tape Slut
-- by Ian Rowe

I saw a yellow roll of duct tape
Just the other day;
It was shiny bright and cheerful
But I prefer you just the same.
Your silver skin is fine to me,
You've born the test of time.
Why would I want to have a roll
Colored like a lemon rind?

I saw some duct tape at the store
That was the color Blue
But for all its glamour and its style
It made me think of you.
Why doll you up in pretty things
When pretty things don't last?
If my life is a sailing ship
Then silver is its mast.

I used a bit of pink duct tape
Just the other day.
I didn't want to do it
But you see you were away.
The pink was kind of pretty
But not as nice as you
I hope you don't mind, tomorrow
I'll buy a roll of blue.

Hi Sadie. Believe it or not, I wrote every word myself. I've never read any of your friend Peters work but he is obviously a man of great talent and is probably charming, gracious, and witty. Great minds do indeed follow similar tracks.

Seriously, I'd like to read some of his stuff. If you can point the way,I'd be grateful.
