I hate September 11th. I wake with dread.
Add to that loss and disaster the US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Time to step back and reflect.

Eyepop Productions made this short film about 15 years ago, lots of other sites have since re-loaded it and get hits for it, but I prefer to link to the original.

BOATLIFT - An Untold Tale of 9/11 Reslience, narrated by Tom Hanks.

It serves to remind us that "we all have some hero in us" when it comes to events like this.

To see what Mudcatters were saying on the day it happened go to the drop-down menu at the top of the page and select "Messages by date" and go to the day. Lots of traffic and several threads started then.
SINSULL linked to the Ur thread in all of this and this link goes to the bottom to Joe's list of other threads on the topic.

Back in 2001, I woke up here in Australia in the early morning to find my Hubby had the TV on with what I thought was a sci-fi movie on the screen. He told me it was really happening in the US. We were both speechless at the horror of what was being shown on the TV.

The night before I had recorded the first episode of a spin-off show from the X-Files called The Lone Gunmen.

"The Lone Gunmen investigate the suspicious death of Byers' father, a top tier government agent, and discover a top secret plan for a false flag operation to crash a plane into the World Trade Center."

When I watched the show a couple of days later I saw what could have been the actual footage of the attack but the episode had been first broadcast in March that same year. It was a scary, freaky coincidence that the show was first broadcast here in Oz on the evening before we saw the 9/11 events actually happening.

In a complete departure from reality, Trump is now claiming that two firefighters pulled him out of the rubble of the twin towers. I'm not going to dig up a source, I think it's something that went through his X or Truth Social account. On the day this happened New York City's prime sociopath was bragging that he now owned the tallest building in New York. That was what occurred to him on the day that thousands died and the world changed.

That video I linked above gives a view of the day that encapsulates the horror and the heroism in equal measure. That kind of balance is helpful, even 25 years after the event.

Bigots have circulated a petition suggesting that the mayor of New York City shouldn't attend the memorial on the 11th because he is Muslim. This is the kind of nonsense that has grown since the event itself, and because of Drumpf in particular and his normalization of conspiracy theories and xenophobia.

(Moved to BS since there is a political context.)

I don't think he claimed "that two firefighters pulled him out of the rubble of the twin towers", but as usual he cannot bear it if any person or situation is getting more attention than he is getting. Everything has to be about hin. He is incapable of acting in a presidential manner.

All he claimed was that "a building was about to fall", and that firemen helped him away. Oh yes, and that he had brought 200 employees to help clear rubble.
ALL his claims about that day have been proven to be either direct lies, or confused memories..... but pure LIES is the most reasonable. Then he modified his claim to assert that it was the next day, the 12th, when the building was about to fall... and even THAT was demonstrably false.
He is simply embroidering one falsehood with another to bolster his standing with his base, but I have my doubts about how many will believe him.
We all get a chance to tell him what we think in November. VOTE!

I apologize - adding the current fever dream from the guy in the White House has turned yet another topic about a serious event from that event to Trump. Just what he wants.

This morning on FB a friend posted photos of his boarding pass from New Jersey, he was on a plane waiting to take off for Colorado when the first tower was hit. He said once the plane returned to the gate and he was able to find a phone he got two phone calls before they were so clogged they weren't working. Was able to carpool home with a few others.

I had dropped my kids off at school and was leaving the bank when I heard about the first collision on the radio, and was thinking it would be something like the small plane that hit the Empire State Building in 1945. I worked from home those days and I turned on the TV when I arrived, having intended to just look for a minute and found myself still standing there an hour later. Around midday I drove to the kids' schools and pulled them out for the rest of the day and we all watched TV.

I reminded myself of the day when I got home from school after John F. Kennedy was shot and finding my mother sitting quietly in the living room watching TV. She never sat quietly and watched TV during the day, but we all joined her as we got home. (I'd heard about that at school during a late-morning recess, another story for another day.) We were an NBC Huntley/Brinkley family, so would have seen one of them read the death news, not Walter Cronkite (who was on CBS).

Gift article from the New York Times Indelible, Unshakable, but Now Fading: Views From Sept. 11, 2001

Times photographers were on the scene and spread across the city to capture the attacks and their aftermath in images that are, to this day, too heart-wrenching to look at, and too important to look away from.

I was on my way home from work on my half-day off, around lunchtime here in the UK, but I had one more house call to do on the way. I knocked on the lady’s door, and she more or less dragged me into her living room : “Come and look at this” she said. As Helen said, I thought she was watching some sort of apocalypse movie on her TV. The first tower had already been hit, and as we sat there on her sofa, transfixed by what we were seeing, the second tower received its deadly blow. I almost forgot what I was there for, but eventually completed what was needed and returned home to continue watching events unfold throughout the afternoon.
There have been several documentaries here in the UK in the last few days, as well as news coverage of the 25th anniversary.

It was the kind of ordinary day that becomes seared in one's memory. The assassination of JFK was another. My parents remembers the day that FDR died. Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing, and how little they could do except listen to the radio or watch endless clips on the TV.

I remember reaching out to my brother's family in Brooklyn and everyone was alright, although one teenager had to evacuate her school a couple of blocks from the towers, and make her way by foot across the Brooklyn Bridge where she finally was able to catch a ride home; she certainly hasn't forgotten that day.

Charlie Ipcar, just checking in.

Yes Charley, it was exactly like that on the day of the Newcastle NSW earthquake in 1989. The electricity went out so no-one was sure what had happened. I thought a heavy truck had crashed into the library building but when I went and stood on the footpath I could see people in all directions doing the same - standing around, looking all around, looking bewildered and scared. I went to my car and listened to the radio news and that's how we found out it was a major earthquake. We don't get earthquakes here, just tremors now and then.

I woke up in the middle of the night about a year ago and heard the furniture rattling. I jumped up and stood in one spot, having this sort of breathless fear that it could be another earthquake and hurriedly thinking about what needed to be carried outside if we had to evacuate. It was just a tremor from a minor earthquake a long way up north from our area but I had flicked back in time to that awful day.

And the aftermath was worse than the actual earthquake in a lot of ways because the rescuing of people, the clearing of buildings and roads, then the re-building just went on and on.

Australia - 9/11 - It was late in the evening here & I was planning my shower when I realised what I was listening to, so I sat around for about an hour listening in horror before I had to turn the radio off or I wouldn't have got to work the next day.

I remember one caller was an American who had called his brother in the second tower. One of his colleagues who he had met, told him his brother was not at work that day & the line went dead.

25th Anniversary radio program - What it was like being on air during the September 11th terrorist attacks. The radio had very good coverage as an Australian international telephonist & her opposite number in America were on-line chatting as they liked to listen to the Nightlife Quiz so they connected the station to other US numbers.
