Where have ceilidhs been held publicly (or even privately) in Newcastle upon Tyne, especially in the Haymarket area?

Ayup, we did one with Bedlam a while back on the top floor of the discovery museum...is it the discovery museum or have I made that up?! Big brick building to the right of the big crossroads at the bottom of the bike shops on Westgate Road....crikey I've forgotten everything about mi former haunts!

Also the Irish centre, but that's more ceili than ceilidh.

What's it for? Is it anything to do with the unis?

Done one in the King's hall at Newc uni many years back and there's some kind of hall at northumberland that I've played in for some reason or another...I forget why or when......In fact most of my time in Newcastle is a bit foggy!

Bryony

Thanks for that, Bryony. Confession time - there is an attempt to form re-form the University Ceilidh Society. No problem with organising bands, what with all the Traditional Music students past and present. But the Union are being no help at all apparently. Kings Hall costs £300, and that's before you've booked a band, caller or bar!

How many people are you aiming at? Better to be heaving than empty ..

Do you need a professional bar or can you put one on yourself. Is there a beer / real society and the university - teaming up with them would work.

Big pub at the bottom of Chillingham Rd (next to Metro station) has a big upstairs room - done stuff there before

Caedmon Hall in Gateshead (but that's across the water)
Civic Hall will be too expensive I guess ..
There's the hall down by the Swing Bridge - is it the assembly rooms?

What I think you're after is a community centre, working mens club, masonic hall or something like that ...
Community Halls in Newcastle
Halls for hire

Have also done in dances in a variety of school halls - the trick there is to have an 'in' with a teacher ... might be hard for student thing.

Student union has a good hall, don't know about costs.
Blackfriars hall, Newcastle side of bridge to byker.
Tyneside Irish centre in Gallowgate
I will try to think of more

Do you know any of the Kingsmen? They've been hunting out venues for DERT 2009 so they might be able to help you.
xx
