Subject: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Lesley N. Date: 22 Apr 99 - 09:45 PM The information the lyrics of Sash says "This could well be the best known Orange song From The Orange Lark, published by The Ulster Society." Can anyone pass on any information as to when the tune was written, etc? Thanks!

Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Martin _Ryan Date: 23 Apr 99 - 03:08 AM As far as I can see, the Sash was based on an English song "The Hat my father wore" which in turn grew from an Irish-American song called "Irish Molly-o" (Click here), written about 1820. There was an earlier thread about it. I'll post a link when I get a chance - if Joe doesn't get there first! Regards Who, ME??? |

Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Lesley N. Date: 24 Apr 99 - 12:45 PM What an interesting article. It is particularly pertinent because the reason I asked about Sash is that someone wrote complaining that I was ignoring Northern Ireland's music on my web pages. The message was so inflamatory toward The Republic of Ireland and Catholics that I had no interest in responding to it - but I was curious about the song. Thanks!

Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Date: 25 Apr 99 - 07:25 AM Mick I haven't heard the "hat" version sung - I'll take your word that the tune is different - but the shape and phrasing are so similar that there has to be a connection somewhere. John regards |

Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Martin Ryan Date: 25 Apr 99 - 07:36 AM Very interesting article, as you say, Lesley. The obvious questiin now is - what air was used for "Irish Molly"? Brian Mullins (whom I first heard sing it) obviously believed it was the one now used for the Sash - but can we prove it? It would then close the circle. Regards |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: branwen Date: 25 Apr 99 - 10:45 PM I went to the article listed, and was wondering about a song that it mentioned that does not appear to be in this data base. In the article its says that "The Wearing of the Green" and a song called "the Orange ABC" used the same melody. Does anyone know where I could find the lyrics to "The Orange ABC" ? Thanks for any information |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: alison Date: 26 Apr 99 - 08:20 AM hi, There used to be a site for Ulster songs but last time we tried it had disppeared... if no one else finds it I'll type it in later.. and yes, the tune is the wearing of the green.... You can find it in a book called the Orange Standard. slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: John Moulden Date: 26 Apr 99 - 09:07 AM Sorry about the semicolon in the URL - characteristically stupid of my fingers - can't use more than one of them at a time. The orange abc is at and I didn't write that one myself - it was cut and pasted so if it's wrong I disclaim. John Moulden |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: Colm Date: 26 Apr 99 - 09:09 PM Since when, Alison, did Ulster songs become synonymous with Orange songs ? Misconceptions like this must be knocked on the head before they gain a spurious validity. The Orange Order is an all-Ireland body, though much reduced in the South of the country, admittedly, nonetheless, the "Orange Maid of Sligo" while thoroughly Orange in sentiment, cannot be described as Ulster since Sligo is in Connacht. And there are other Orange ballads which do not have any specific reference to Ulster at all. Colm |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: alison Date: 26 Apr 99 - 10:22 PM Hi Colm, Don't blame me.... the site was called "Orange, unionist songs" if I remember correctly... although I found links to it from other sites where it was called "Ulster songs". and of course Ulster songs are not synonymous with the Orange order, as someone from that part of the world I understand that pretty well....... sorry if I caused any confusion..... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Info on The Sash My Father Wore? From: branwen Date: 28 Apr 99 - 12:42 AM Thank you for your help. I am taking a Victorian British history class, and to get out of another assignment, I can sing Irish "Rebel" songs. I really wanted to be able to present both sides in song. There have just been so many to choose from. again my thanks, branwen |
