Well it certainly wasn't a "clean sweep" on the last one. If I recall there was one question that nobody got (although my recollections may be wrong there). Without going back to check my notes, don't know at the moment which were the ones I was able to answer (probably wouldn't be posting that anyway...)

Interesting - the last time I looked (and I checked before posting) there wasn't any prize up for grabs... must go and have another look!

I did ten without research, though I looked up two to check. I got a couple more with googling, and came up with a few wild guesses, and sent them in. But I imagine someone with a good library, good memory and time to google quite a lot will do a clean sweep eventually!

Surreysinger--

Congratulations on getting 4 questions without help--double what I could do. Which ones did you get?

I suppose we'll just have to keep refreshing until the answers are posted--otherwise the thread will drop off--as it's done once already. I figured since the thread had dropped off the list it was reasonable to give a few hints--on the only ones I knew.

Looks like the prize is "Any single or double MT CD".

Number 11 certainly and two others, probably.
Very trick quiz that.

So what are the "Valuable Prizes" (not that I'd ever win one...)?

Ron - in the past the answers have been published, and with quite a bit of detail attached. As to "just proving the ability to research", I reckon you do have to have a modicum of knowledge to even start searching or researching on some of them. At the moment I can answer about four off the top of my head without research... and, as I said, I reckon that this quiz is MUCH more difficult than the last one.

Stone me!
I can answer No 18 and that's it!

Path-et-ic!

I'd like to know what answers people can come up without doing any research. As I said, I can only do 2.

Then, after that, we could do research---which I imagine could be done by almost anyone for most of the answers--and therefore doesn't prove anything except ability to research.

So actually we could just see the answers--and learn a lot from that. And they do sound like great questions.

I don't think Malcolm's hard at all, and agree with him - he's quite right,it is cheating. Everybody should be starting on a level playing field. I did the last quiz and it took a lot of hard research work (I reckon I just missed out on a prize by ONE question)... I don't think I'd have been too happy if anyone else had had an extra advantage like the clues being given above.Re prizes,Desert Danceer, although there were some for the last quiz there is no mention of any in the pipeline for this one on Musical Traditions. so I'm assuming that we will be doing it for the love of it.

Malcolm, you're a hard man. Not even clues? I'd love to try some of these--with clues.

Just don't, anyone, post answers (or even clues) here. Research tools (including google) are legitimate -after all, you have to be able to tell if things you find on the web are accurate or true- but sharing ideas would be cheating.

23 I get definitely get. And so does Bill D. I'm pretty sure Nancy King and I have heard him sing it accompanying himself on autoharp. And he does a third verse Charlie Poole doesn't do--but it's a great verse. Last Sunday I sang the song at our local farmer's market with a guy called the Banjo Man. After all, the event in question in the song is somewhat local.

And 19 I get. This guy is quite famous--everybody has probably heard of him. And there's quite a controversy as to whether the bones brought back from Paris are his or somebody else's.

I could guess at the instrument in number 18--but not very confidently.

But nothing else.

But the whole quiz sounds just wonderful--just the kind of knowledge it's great fun to know--can hardly wait for the answers.

Nancy, I think that we should wait, given that there are Valuable Prizes to be won...

Here's the link to Yate's last quiz, with answers, which might give folks some insight into how he thinks: click.

Tough quiz!

The only one I know off the top of my head is #23 -- and the event commemmorated in the song I'm thinking of did happen in 1904 (I just checked). Shall we put answers here, or wait a while to see what others come up with?

Nancy

I was with you, Desert Dancer. I guessed McKinley's death, but it was indeed in 1901. Back to the drawing board(or google).

Mudcatters might be interested in the new quiz from Mike Yates at Musical Traditions.

Of the 25 questions, I could answer numbers 5, 12, 23 off the top of my head (assuming I'm correct!) and knew enough to be able to ferret out the answer to no. 13. Not particularly impressive!

Oops, now that I double-check what I assumed was the answer to #23 occurred in 1901, not 1904. Even worse.

I can get #22 by Googling, but that seems like cheating.
