Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 24 Sep 07 - 11:45 AM I might have read through the list too quickly (exigencies of the workplace, and all), but I didn't see "The Spring Hill Mine Disaster" on there. As I recall, it tells of a Utah mine incident that cost many lives. Though I've seen it in print, I have never heard it performed. |
Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: dick greenhaus Date: 24 Sep 07 - 06:16 PM Hi- Springhill is in Nova Scotia. The book focuses on Appalachia--and there are more than enough mining songs from that refion to fill several books. Two current recording that include Springhill Mining Disaster are: CFW 03d "Come to Me in Canada" : Jon Bartlett & Rika Ruebsaat TOPC 340d "Martin Carthy" |
Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: Dan Schatz Date: 24 Sep 07 - 06:41 PM It sounds like a wonderful collection - I look forward to hearing it. The only artist I'd really like to see included who isn't is Helen Schneyer, who sang some of the best mining songs I've every heard - "A Miner's Prayer" and the mining version of "Fountain Filled with Blood" not the least amongst them. Dan Schatz |

Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Oct 07 - 06:40 AM Ayup, Les, that's the song - The Ballad of Springhill (Springhill Mine Disaster), by Peggy Seeger, 1958. The Peggy Seeger Songbook attributes words and music to Peggy Seeger, but Peggy's notes say Ewan MacColl supplied several lines in the fourth verse. I found myself in Springhill one November midnight, and found the mine where it happened - it's now a museum. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Oct 07 - 01:13 PM Springhill is an old town, founded in 1790. It was the center for several coal mines, one notably operated by Cumberland Railroad and Mining, all closed now. It gets much of its heat geothermally. Also known as the home town of Anne Murray. Near the ocean and an attractive area, it is a recreational center. I remember the black tea served there- one can float a spoon in it. |
Subject: RE: Coal Mining Songs--New Book + CDs From: GUEST,Ron Short Date: 20 Jan 10 - 02:06 PM The mining version of "Fountain Filled With Blood" was written by my wife Joan Boyd Short and I produced and sang on the song for the "Music of Coal" Cd. I preferred to use Appalachian singers for the song and especially people who had a direct connection to coal mining and the musical culture. Rarely do people think of African-Americans in relation to the coalfields and rarely do these two distinct Appalachian musical traditions come together in one voice!! |
