I'm planning to be in the central camping if I am with a performing side, otherwise they might not let me and pfaffing around with the 2-miles-out-and-oh-dear-was-that-the-last-bus is a pain. I'm curious to see if the magic can be sustained without the real 8 Bells |

Facilities - er - field, long grass, usually bog (that is to say swamp, not unsavoury W.C.) by gate, sometimes farmer with tractor to tow caravans and campervans out. No water. No lavatories. No lights. Said central camping is stated to be open only to those with full seasons, or who are booked performers (or musicians for a booked morris side), but last year it was very underused. You are also supposed to book for the use of it in advance, and although I satisfied all the conditions last year (and won the unofficial prize for the autocross in getting volvo and van to the top of the hill where it was a bit drier - starting my run-up in about France and hitting the hill at about 50, and finding EVERYTHING on the floor of the caravan when I smugly opened the van door: I'm told onlookers could see daylight under both van wheels at times) nobody came to check. |

Sadly I don't have transport, so the Chanticleer is always a bit of a problem... and this week there's a bit too much going on anyway - I'll be scooting around breathlessly for three days on the trot - Roy Bailey and Tony Benn at the Electric Theatre in Guildford on Thursday, Jez Lowe at the Music Institute (forerunner club was the Good Old Way in Farncombe run by Ed Rennie, of course), and then up to the Traditional Song Forum meeting at C# House on Saturday morning, and back down to Godalming Borough Hall for the GBH Ceilidh with Peeping Tom in the evening - anybody got a TARDIS for rent??? |

I like to think that we can recapture the atmosphere of the old Eight Bells sessions in the Vine. As for camping, I thought the out of town camp site was quite good. You have to be more organised and stick to the bus timetables, which obviously restricts you, but it's a nice site. I don't know what buses they're laying on from there this year. |

I hear tell he's actually not very keen on being called a singer/songwriter either (well so it says on his website) - because he's more of a storyteller really. Most of his songs tell traditional and true stories, and most are woven with lyrical and melodlc strands plucked directly from traditional sources. But he then would say that wouldn't he! |

See you there! |

Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Festival, 5-7 Oct, 2007 From: Richard Bridge Date: 07 Oct 07 - 12:58 PM Ground was dry, weather was smashing on Saturday, beer in the Woolpack was magnificent, lots of jovial morris-persons. The 8 Bells is sorely missed, but all those trying at the Vine were valiant, and the new (that's another new) landlord was amiable-ish. But the acoustics are not the same, the beer is not the same, the prices are not the same, and the flipping speaker system that annouces whose lunch-table is ready cannot be turned off. No disabled lavatories in a completely rebuilt building is really a no-no in this day and age, too. At one stage I thought that one or two splendid traditional singers were adding a verse each time there was an announcement... The Vine however does look pretty and I gather the food is not bad, for the upwardly mobile amongst you. It hasn't got the frisson that the 8 Bells had, but it may gain as time goes on. I did notice that string players (guitarists, fiddlers, banjo pluckers, guitarists, mandolinists etc) seemed thin (self excepted) on the ground and on Sunday I was the only bodhran player and there was only one spooner. Alan Castle says I must write 100 lines (now that's a way to finish learning "Famous Flower of Serving Men"...) and they did check everyone in to central camping last year, but someone told them whose van was mine so I never saw the check. This year the check was very efficient. I do think that the festival could make a profit out of the central camping with one or two changes.... 1. Do not restrict it to season holders and performers - the fields there would take 300 or 400 vans/tents with ease 2 Get a few portaloos in (the nearest public bog closes at night, not convenient if you have no grottibotti with you) 3 Let people know that water can be got at the station 4 Double the price. £8 for the whole weekend, even without water and loos is way too cheap 5 Bring caravans and cars in via the haulage/farm yard - it would only mean moving about 6 feet of electric fence, and campers who stayed up that end would be largely on the flat on higher ground so no getting stuck in the mud, and they'd be nearer the station water, and to the town itself. This would mean more trade for the pubs too because no-one would need to drive out to the expensive "real" caravan sites that are way out of walking range and not well served by buses (and one of which is unhelpful too). Just think, 400 vans/tents at £16 per pitch - over £6,000 into the festival's budget, more people coming 'cos no-one is put off by the distance of the campsites, those who come drinking more 'cos no-one has to drive so more profit in the pubs, more customers for the stallholders (why doesn't someone put in a camping sundries stall - or is there too much hassle over gaz cylinders?). Win-win! Flora (not Gundulf's Flora) - the giantess figure - was estimable too, but the person who decided to put a viewing panel in the skirt so that the operator sould see out might have been able to predict what the morris sense of humour would make of a giant female figure with a hole cut in her skirt at about giantess-pubic-area level... Shame I only discovered the genuine curry stall much too late. I could have given that a bashing on Saturday... (in stead of the fish-shop that was shut on Friday when I got peckish by 10 pm and was out of rock and out of curry sauce when I was peckish at about 8 on Saturday. I'm not sure the curry rolls agreed with me... |

Thanks to all who came to the singarounds and especially to Elizabeth who quickly penned a food-announcer shanty... and to the singers of songs of devil magpies, who managed in a two-song set to ensure that J Wilkinson kicked twa penalties... the weather being so good, the indoor events were less likely to be well attended, and sometimes publicans don't realise that even morris-men sometimes pace themselves.. but better the weather for the dancing I guess. Final thought- those Euro-dancers- did they really do what I think they did and dance half a hopstepping thighslap moussaka each with a bottle of wine in their undergarments? Tell me I didn't dream it... |

If you come in early the hill climb is possible (I did it last year when the ground was NOT perfect). Then out is mostly downhill. But would be easier if entry from the yard was possible. |

Jacky and I enjoyed our short visit whilst we waited for my elder brother to wake up in Maidstone Hospital otherwise we would have stayed much longer Pity that the good pubs have gone all poncy. |

Slightly tongue in cheek, may I also suggest a table shanty competition next year, with a prize for the best table shanty. To the tune of "Blood Red Roses"... "Your table's ready, food is done Sit down, you hungry yuppies, sit down For that is where my profits come Sit down, you hungry yuppies, sit down Oh you hungry foodies Sit down, you hungry yuppies, sit down" There are other verses too. And maybe a table-waiting morris dance competition too, eg set table with Besty and Fool seated; ring of 8 dancers (with border sticks) circle with longsword step, 4 dancers approach, 1 towards each table corner capering, pause, bow, scrape floor with stick, alternate stick whacks over diners heads, retreat to ring capering backwards, turn to 4 pairs (the retreating dancers on outside) and process like spokes of a wheel to the next corner, revert to ring, dance round as before, fresh dancer approaches each corner, repeat. After each spoke has done each corner, in the next ring proceed as hay until the odd and even number dancers have changed places. Repeat. After these different 4 spokes have done each corner, each dancer will ahve been on each corner. Circle briefly. Rush from ring flanking table (like Gog Magog Molly do), reforming circle with yell and sticks high. Fool and Betsy fall to floor. |

We had to ask them to clean the toilet, bring us some toilet roll, bring an extra towel as we were only given one between the two of us for the whole weekend. The hot water tap in the sink simply didn't work, the shower was either too hot to get in or too cold to get in and was full of scum in the shower tray where it hadn't been cleaned. The Woolpack might do some great beer and nice food but you really don't want to stay there. In terms of the festival - not bad at all. Had a good weekend all in all watching the morris dancing and visiting the stalls etc. I just felt that the Vine was very much the wrong place for a session. It's a wine bar and had no atmosphere at all. On top of that the session was stuck in the smallest corner where only a handful of people could join in and listners were forced to stand in front of the door (also the fire exit). We felt unable to join in and started our own session at the Woolpack. Within half an hour the pub was heaving and people were joining us saying they too found it hard to join in at the Vine. Perhaps the White Lion or the Woolpack would be a better venue for the opening and closing session next year. P.S. We also started a session in the street outside the Woolpack on Saturday evening and a local photographer took some pics. Does anyone know which paper he was from as I'd love a copy. Thanks |

Are pubs now like trains...i.e. no openable windows? And those of us who turned up on time - rather than ahead of time - also found ourselves in the doorway/exit. Neither of these venues are of adequate capacity. The Vine is comfortable in a postmodern sort of way, but its pretentious 'classiness' is totally undermined by the tannoy. All they need is one person to deliver food to the tables which even Wetherspoon seem to manage. Despite these criticisms it was a cracking weekend and many thanks to Alan for organising it. Rik |

On several occasions during the summer (if that's what it was!) on the Sittingbourne line I actually had to put my jacket on when I got on the train because it was so bloody cold even though it was fairly warm outside. I agrre with the postings about the Vine- it was a manager who's only just taken over and was committed to the festival by the brewery/ previous manager. Apparently he took over £10 000 in the weekend (?) He previously had been listening to complaints by a family of diners who wanted the piped music on (in the far room) when the (second Tiesday) folk club was in the front. Not a fan. The angles are all wrong for attention, though there were 50 people in the small area- we had 28 singers at lunchtime sat and similar in the evening. It's always been the case at Tenterden that where a session is full, some drift off to start another, and very healthy this is too... so it's the Woolpack from now on... |

When I said that neither the Vine nor the Woolpack were of adequate capacity I should have qualified that. I meant for the number of people trying to get in at particular times. Of course, the bigger the crowd the less chance to sing individually, so there must be an optimum number for singarounds and on those grounds the Woolpack will be fine (provided I can sit/stand near a window!). |
