I'm sure Mr (Is that songbook ready yet)Bartlett would have no objection to being chained to the bar... should we songwriters form a circle and Chinese whisper in a registered Folk Authentication session? Rumour has it that the wonderful WholeHearted (Pete Luscombe & John Bartlett)and friends will be singing in the (? Wiliam) Caxton on Friday night - no better way to start the weekend as far as I'm concerned. It could only be bettered if someone chained their legs to the bar & made them sing all weekend!

No that's the other Tom Bliss's mate's chum, but actually it's an alias. His REAL name is Dave Bowie, like my (and Maggie Boyle's) bass player. The other David Bowie's really called Jones.

Nar you got me bang to rights, guv - I'm a deep throat pop singer, me. (Was even signed to Pete Waterman when I was young and pretty and wore black leather trousers, only).

It's a fair cop. Even if my songs were Oralised by Others, me doing my own versions (well, there would be some erosion, but not enough to satisfy the IFMC) would not qualify as folk. You've blown my cover, Richard - I'm a marked man now. (But maybe I qualify for the EFDSS Witless Protection Scheme! Where's that flier?) :-)

Definition of Folk Music ,decided by the International Folk Music Council in 1954.

"Folk music is the product of a musical tradition that has been evolved through the process of oral transmission. The factors that shape the tradition are: (i) continuity which links the present with the past; (ii) variation which springs from the creative impulse of the individual or the group; and (iii) selection by the community, which determines the form or forms in which the music survives.
The term can be applied to music that has been evolved from rudimentary beginnings by a community uninfluenced by popular and art music and it can likewise be applied to music which has originated with an individual composer and has subsequently been absorbed into the unwritten living tradition of a community.
The term does not cover composed popular music that has been taken over ready-made by a community and remains unchanged, for it is the re-fashioning and re-creation of the music by the community that gives it its folk character."

Take no notice of those other phoney Toms. Richard is quite right. Under the 1954 definition people like me are not actually folk singers, and we are wrong to call ourselves such. Technically, we should not be booked at folk clubs or folk festivals, and cartainly - as Dave Sissons has just kindly pointed out in Stirrings - we should not be encouraged to write songs influenced by tradition, and certainly we should NOT bring out CDs! LOL

I stand corrected Richard. I've got my coat already, I'm only popping back in for that plectrum I dropped...

Yes, I understand from Tom that Tom is going to do different material at Tenterden and at Nellies (so you'll need to come to both to hear your favourites, if you have any, that is, Tom says) - in fact he's just organising his set lists as we speak.

Well, the folk club itself has been surviving pretty well at the Vine, it's a bit resonant and people in the back can't see round pillars, so it's sometimes noisy, but then so was the Bells... think all the session seekers ought to be able to find something- whether in the Vine lunch/evening or with Travelling Folk on Sunday- but a plea to have a look at the concerts too- plenty of good acts to listen to... if it's Tom Bliss you want to see, you can see him as full guest at Nellies in Tonbridge on Mon 1st October 8pm start- early arrival if you're after a floor spot... but there's Steve Turner, Keith Kendrick, Sylvia Needham, David Jones & many more, all of whom deserve support... see you there!

I think you'll find that my namesake does quite a few Folk songs Richard (your definition being which others might call Traditional, yes)? I hear tell he's actually not very keen on being called a singer/songwriter either (well so it says on his website) - because he's more of a storyteller really. Most of his songs tell traditional and true stories, and most are woven with lyrical and melodlc strands plucked directly from traditional sources. But he then would say that wouldn't he!

I'll be chairing the session in 'The Vine' on Friday evening, then the session in the 'White Lion' Saturday lunchtime and back to 'The Vine' with Bob Kenward and others on Saturday evening. Look forward to seeing you there.

Spare Parts (Bryan Creer, Suzanne Higgins and me) are running a part-playing session for concertinas on the afternoon of Sunday 7th. October in the White Lion Saddlery from 2.00 -3.30 pm. If you'd like the dots and/or a midi file of the music in advance, let me know. The session is open to non- season ticket holders for a modest fee. We're also running a general session in the White Lion from 11.00 am that morning.

I've got a gig in Ashford on the Saturday night, which cuts the weekend in half for me, but I shall be there during the day on Saturday. I like to think that we can recapture the atmosphere of the old Eight Bells sessions in the Vine.

As for camping, I thought the out of town camp site was quite good. You have to be more organised and stick to the bus timetables, which obviously restricts you, but it's a nice site. I don't know what buses they're laying on from there this year.

Hi Tom - yes, I was intending to say hello in Tenterden at some point, since I'm Guildford born and bred (and still living here!). Sadly I don't have transport, so the Chanticleer is always a bit of a problem... and this week there's a bit too much going on anyway - I'll be scooting around breathlessly for three days on the trot - Roy Bailey and Tony Benn at the Electric Theatre in Guildford on Thursday, Jez Lowe at the Music Institute (forerunner club was the Good Old Way in Farncombe run by Ed Rennie, of course), and then up to the Traditional Song Forum meeting at C# House on Saturday morning, and back down to Godalming Borough Hall for the GBH Ceilidh with Peeping Tom in the evening - anybody got a TARDIS for rent???

Central camping is on the website. Physically, it is down Station Road. Facilities - er - field, long grass, usually bog (that is to say swamp, not unsavoury W.C.) by gate, sometimes farmer with tractor to tow caravans and campervans out. No water. No lavatories. No lights.

Said central camping is stated to be open only to those with full seasons, or who are booked performers (or musicians for a booked morris side), but last year it was very underused. You are also supposed to book for the use of it in advance, and although I satisfied all the conditions last year (and won the unofficial prize for the autocross in getting volvo and van to the top of the hill where it was a bit drier - starting my run-up in about France and hitting the hill at about 50, and finding EVERYTHING on the floor of the caravan when I smugly opened the van door: I'm told onlookers could see daylight under both van wheels at times) nobody came to check.

I'm looking forward to it very much - and it would be nice to meet you both too (I'm technically a surrey singer myself, raised on 'The Good Old Wey' in the godalming/ farncombe / puttenham zone). I have a week of gigs in the Home Counties area (for example may I reccommend my old chum Luis de Berniere at the Chanticleer as a warm-up for Tenterden, on the wednesday before? He's bringing his mandolin, even if not Captain Correlli himself)!

I'm planning to be in the central camping if I am with a performing side, otherwise they might not let me and pfaffing around with the 2-miles-out-and-oh-dear-was-that-the-last-bus is a pain.

I'm curious to see if the magic can be sustained without the real 8 Bells
