The colours in Regent's Park are astounding, many different greens, blended with shades of mustard, lemon, saffron, tangerine, honey and gold. It's times like this that working on the 19th floor overlooking the park is a blessing - shame I'm on the wrong side and overlook Kings Cross Station and the monstrous carbuncle that is the British Library building - the only red brick building in a sea of white Portland stone! Grant Thornton House may be hideous black glass and marble, but at least it hides much of the BL!

Its a wonderfully bright and crisp morning here. Woolly jumpers are coming out of the wardrobe, hats and scarves will be out soon, the leaves are changing colour on the trees. Everything looks beautiful in this light!

I would have understood Guy Fawkes, but not the shortened reference. Thanks!

It's raining out here this morning. Not cold, barely cool out yet, but fall is coming. How about a nice cuppa cocoa with a kick of something in it? Creme the menthe, maybe?

Ah, but fireworks are no longer constricted to November 5th - it's Eid ul Fitr next week, so the skies above London will be alight with sparkles.

Bit like 1940, but hopefully safer.

Oh, and 100!!!

Aside from the chocolate it is very similar to my grandmothers "hermit cake"

A favorite Getaway moment:
Post-Getaway Micca came back to Maine with Tami, Barry and me. JP Thornton's is a local deli/sandwich bar/general store where Micca endeared himself by calling it JP Hooker's.
One morning he ordered a Bacon Butty. I sighed; the order-taker looked confused; Tom, the owner, said "Two Bacon Butties, coming up" much to our surprise. They were quite good.
They still ask me about that strange foreign man.

Try a quarter cup of sugar (or sucralose) in that chili.

When I was a kid we always spent Sunday afternoon driving out in Amish country and came home with Trail bologna, sharp Swiss cheese, homemade bread and fresh sweet cider for supper. I can taste it now.

   What are bacon butties please?

I should point out that good chili is not very hot. In my recipe, the only real heat is added by the red pepper flake. If you chop in Hatch or Anaheim peppers, they are both very mild. If you chop in jalapenos or habaneros, look out. If you follow my recipe, you'll have a chili that is spicy, but not hot. If you want to be cautious, cut the pepper flake in half and reduce the chili powder a bit.

Well, sucks to yer bacon buddies, fried treacle sandwiches, and steaming bowls of pork drippings. Oh, to be a cardiologist in England and the Holidays ahead!
This change in the weather, crisp evenings, cool mornings, bright days, football on Sunday means its time for old fashioned American comfort food, namely....Chili!

LEJ's Real Chili

Brown 1/2 pound each ground pork and lean ground beef in a skillet with 1/2 chopped onion, 2 chopped cloves of garlic, 1 chopped green pepper, 2 or 3 chopped hatch or anaheim chilis (if available), and 1 tablespoon bitter chocolate.
Drain fat, and add 8 oz tomato sauce, 8 oz Rotel mixed tomatoes and peppers, and another 8 oz can of stewed tomatoes if you are a real Lycopene junky. Simmer on low, gradually adding
1 1/2 Tbs Cumin powder
1 1/2 Tbs Chili Powder
1 tsp red pepper flake
1/2 tsp cinnamon
4-6 whole cloves
Simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours while the delicious aroma permeates your abode. One half hour before serving add 1 tbs corn starch to 1/2 cup water, mix and pour into the chili. Also add 1 tbs masa flour(if available) to 1/2 cup water, mix, and add to chili. The chili thickness should be gravy-like.
Drain and add 8 oz pinto beans and stir in 10 minutes or so before serving.

According to the old Cincinnatti tradition, Chili is served as
1)Chili One Way...as above recipe, but no beans
2)Chili Two ways...with beans
3)Chili Three Ways...beans, with grated cheese on top
4)Chili Four Ways...beans, with chopped onions and grated cheese on top
5)Chili Five Ways...beans, chopped onions and cheese on top, spaghetti underneath

Goes well with a crisp lager beer!

I don't know about these bacon butties, but I have a home-grown fall tomato on my window sill that is just about perfect for a BLT. I've tried making them with store-bought tomatoes, but they just aren't good enough.

I'll bring two, one for the birthday girl JennyO.

Any bacon butties left? I like them any time - whatever the weather.

I expect there will be a lot of lemon flavoured ice water floating around here in the next few months. Just had the spring equinox, and the seriously warm weather is now kicking in. Our main Sydney water supply, the Warragamba Dam, is covered with blue-green algae due to the warm weather, but we've been assured it is safe. I think I might stick to beer, wine and gin and tonic - with a slice of lemon of course. In fact I think I'll have one right now. Anyone else? There are plenty of lemons!

We've been doing major cleaning up in our yard, but there's lots more to do yet. I think we must have been bitten by the spring cleaning bug!

Sandra, where were those pictures taken? The red passionflower is very pretty, but you don't get passionfruit. I prefer my plain ones that lead to fruit. They are a bit slow getting going this year. The plant is recovering from the snail attack - there is a lot of fresh new growth - but no flowers yet.

I am not sure, but you might get into the Guinness book of World Records if you could prove that your ass was equinoctial, Mary. There might be some money in it -- maybe a visit with John Stewart, or a late-evening spot on Focks Noise.

It's worth a shot. Fire up that xerox machine and start preparing your documentation...

I am hot, sticky and cranky. One wrong move from that squid and I will strangle him with his own tentacles.
I want a COLD lemonade with a shot or two of vodka, a private fan and no one within ten feet of me.

Mulled Cider dumplings can be made with either fresh/sweet cider or with the UK kind - spiced with mulling spices, and sweetened to taste.

Thicken with arrowroot or cornstarch. I usually do this in a wide shallow pan - something with a good lid though, because once the dumplings are added you need to cover it.

Bring to a simmer and drop in dumplings made with:

2.5 cups baking mix (I use bisquick)
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar

Using a heaping tablespoon to drop them into the simmering syrup.

simmer for 10 minutes
Cover tightly and simmer for another 10 minutes
then uncover; take from the heat and let them cool a bit. Serve Warm with the syrup ladled over the dumplings themselves - possible with ice cream or a good thick whipped cream.

Also possible to make with just about any fruit juice.

But before I can chill out for the season we have to swap the LR furniture into its huddle-near-the-heater position in front of the hoceky TV and put the treadmill facing into the sunnysunny window.

But I'll take an iced coffee to zoom off on....

Hot, dark Christmas pudding in 'plastic white' bread, smothered in butter which melts into the pudding and down your sleeve.... Mmmmmmmm.

Instead I've had the world's most flavourless egg fried rice, in which I couldn't even taste the spring onions, and we know how hard they are to disguise!

It's here again, Autumn/Spring, depending on whether you're vernal or not...

The days are about equal to the nights this week, we've got a fantastic full moon in the Northern hempisfere and the early mornings are decidedly crisp, if not downright chilly! Berries and fruit are burgeoning in the hedgerows and foxes can be seen crespuscing.

On the other side, the days are growing warmer, the flowers are starting to peep out and blossom is on its way.

Pull up a comfy chair, settle down with the last of the summer or winter ales and enjoy.
