Hi! I didn't even know you'd arrived! I was the fat bald bloke playing the weird red mandolin in the corner. Wish you'd introduced yourself...aah well, next time maybe. Glad you enjoyed the session; the regulars do indeed play together a lot, the session has been going every Monday, without exception (even Christmas Day) for eight years. Malc (the landlord and guitar/banjo player) describes it as 'the best band he's never played in'. Do you play/sing? If so, it would be good to hear you!

Well, now all can be revealed - and the winner was - - - - the M6! - six hours to Penrith on Friday (my own fault - I should have known it was the start of half term! Good humour not much improved the next day by four hours to Edinburgh to watch England get beaten by Argentina in the company of a surprising number of surprisingly cheerful Scots. Monday capped it all - I suppose not strictly the fault of the M6 as it was closed at the time! How I wished we'd chosen Newburgh as we passed junction 27 in the gathering dusk, but Mrs SJ had voted for Leek (wasn't this supposed to be about the North of England?) as it looked like an interesting little town (as opposed to a village) and of course we would be able to enjoy a pleasant stroll around exploring it in the warmth of a late afternoon in Autumn - or as it turned out in the pitch dark of a rather bleak evening. Still we found a bite to eat (and a drop to drink) and eventually crept rather rudely late into the session at the Wilkes Head where the weekend was rescued as we sat at the bar and absorbed a friendly atmosphere, some excellent beer and a really tight session from a goodly groop of regulars (I presume) who obviously sing and play together a lot. - really cheered me up, it did! Thanks especially to them, and to all who took an interest. Next challenge - North Norfolk in mid November, but I should start a new thread for that, I guess.

Sorry you can't make the Sun Inn; it's one of my regular evenings. Sadly Ron Angel is still a bit poorly following his op earlier in the year but we have a very good committee and a good team of regular floor singers so the club is still a strong club. We had a really good singaround on Monday past; a Canadian singer called Heather Dale called in on us, plus another group, so it was a really fun evening. I was at three singarounds in the area this week; the Sun Inn on Monday, the Cutty Wren on Thursday, and the Globe in Guisborough last night. I'm happy to report that it was three excellent evenings. Lots of good folk things in our area.

Another vote for the Shroppie Fly. People *travel* regularly to go to this session and I know lots of people who say it's their favourite. Can't guarantee it will be good but it probably will be.
If you say you're coming then Greg Stephens (and hopefully the rest of the Boat Band?) has said he will be there - big bonus!!

Well, I guess it's make-your-mind-up time.

Stockton was the early front runner - with several later supporters - and I followed various links to Ron Angel's site - nice tracks! great voice! - seriously tempting! - but defeated by the geography in the end (I'm starting west of Edinburgh and ending west of Oxford; I laid a pencil point to point on the map and it was freakily close to the M6. (BTW, supporters of the Sun Inn might like to google it (link to beerintheevening.com - you wouldn't go there if this was all you knew! Some counter-posting needed I think.)

Strongly tempted to ignore the family summons and stop off at Swinton for the whole weekend!

Liked the sound of the Shroppie Fly - particularly its waterside location - but could find no trace of local accommodation.

So it looks like a toss-up between Newburgh (music, food and bed under one roof - established club - my former "home territory" - but the whole of the worst part of the M6 to face the following morning) and Leek (harder to get info on the web, but when you do it sounds like a great pub - and its "own" brewery - food and bed a couple of hundred yards up the road in the Peak Weavers and closer to home the following day - but all the web info was rather old.)

It might just come down to availability of a room on th day.

York would be an obvious stop over if one was using public transport but sadly i don't think the Reindeer session survived the change of landlord other than that Monday is the only mid week day that there isn't a folkie thing on, Sunday session in the Golden Ball and Tuesday session in the Maltings, both within easy walking distance of the railway station.

If Standish is your neck of the woods then the club I run on a Monday night isn't far away - The Room at the Top FC at Newburgh about 3 miles away from J27 - A5209 towards Parbold - Newburgh's the next village past Parbold

Jon; the road you mention certainly is a pretty route; I know, I live just off that road halfway between Leek and Ashbourne. If you do come that way, watch out for speed cameras; there are 19 of them in the 13 miles between Leek and Ashbourne alone, including 5 in the tiny village of Waterhouses.

Fantastic! - what a great response - not sure if I should cancel the trip while I research the websites of every place mentioned or merely extend it indefinitely and try them all!

Mr Happy - that's a tremendous resource you have there - is it your own or is it available one some site somewhere (I'm assuming it will also cover the other days of the week as well)? I particularly liked the selection of venues in Lancashire - I grew up there (in Standish, totally unheard of until the arrival of junction 27 on the road we love to hate) so I'm quite tempted to trip down memory lane.

But I'm also rather tempted by Leek (thanks mandotim) even though it's a bit further south than my original spec - I seem to remember that the Derby-Ashbourne-Leek-Macclesfield road was the pretty route in days gone by (ie before the early M6 was joined through to the M1).

I have just tried drawing a beeline(or possibly a crowline) on the map from Edinburgh to Oxford. It only shaves the corner of Yorkshire in the Ingleton region. Basically, it's Cumbria and Lancashire that it goes through, as us west-of-the-Pennines types have been pointing out. Forget about your Leeds and Bradford and Durham stuff. Go West,Young Man!

Just came down from Newcastle back to Manchester via A1/M1/M62 and, as usual, Leeds was absolutely shite - Tail to tail all the the way from Weatherby to past Bradford. Added an hour to the journey. 3.5 hours - A69, M6, M61 usualy takes 3 although it is 50 miles longer!

Dick is right of course - Using public transport is better but have you seen the daft things that happen on the railways? Look it up yourself, Going from Manchester to Newcastle via London is half the price of the direct route. Honestly! You have to but the tickets seperately but it does work believe it or not.

avoid motorways,if you have to use a motorway have citizens band radio,get information from lorry drivers,as to where hold ups are,that is what I used to do,when I was gigging alot in England ,now I use public transport .FROM EDINBURGH

OK Nutty, give us your best route from Edinburgh to Oxford, I'm always game for variety. I only said what I consider the good way, I'm willing to be persuaded.
Personally,I think the Yorkshire exponents here are being seduced by the widespread belief that, becaue Edinburgh is in the east, it ought to connect up with Yorkshire and the M1. Well, it is, and it does, in a way.You have to remember that Edinburgh is far from being an eastern town in absolute terms, though it is on the east side of Scotland.The thing is, it is actually west of Carlisle. Carlisle and Lancashire has always been a good route into England from Scotland: favoured by Robert the Bruce, the 1715 Jacobites, the 1745 Jacobites, Glaswegians with cans of lager on trains en route for Blackpool and Morecambe, etc etc.

Granted the M6 does pass through some beautiful countryside you can only appreciate it as a passenger.

As a driver all you ever see is the car/van/lorry in front, as the volume of traffic is so heavy you never dare to take your eyes off the road.

I think you must be getting mixed up with the M1;-)

Check the traffic stats and closures of both M'ways and You will find the M6 is staticaly better as well as the shorter and quicker route. Of course we could always send SJ via the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Dales but the downside of that is that he would then have to go via Bradford or Leeds. If he wanted to spend 12 hours or so in the car of course...

It's near Swinton if you made a weekend!

A little further south than you wished for, but the Shroppie Fly in Audlem, Cheshire, could be the one for you, if you are coming down the M6.Turn off for Nantwich. Session in the bar, mainly singing, some tunes, pretty trad old fashioned pub in very old fashioned canal village(canal outside pub front door).Not sure if they have accommodation, if not the other two pubs are the Lord Combermere and the Bridge.
Let us know if you're coming, and I'll turn out to say hello.

The SUN INN at STOCKTON ON TEES is always worth a visit.

Can be got to very easily if you travel from Newcastle down the A19 rather than the A1.

I've a rare opportunity - traveling from somewhere near Edinburgh to somewhere near Oxford on Monday 22 October but able to take it easy and stop over somewhere sort of half way. Anyone know a good venue broadly anywhere between say the line of the A66 and that of the M62 for an evening's music with some singing, and a touch of the traditional (but I'll not be obsessive!). If I really hit the jackpot it'll be in a quaint Olde Worlde pub with fine beer, where I can also get a room for the night, but all suggestions welcome!
