There was also a song, IIRC, that began
Be the good Lord willing, I'll see you in the morning.

I found this thread a help in bring back my memory of a song I heard from Fritz Shuler..... thought I would modernize it a bit...

Rich girl rides in a Cadillac Seville
Poor girl she does the same
My gal drives a car that only goes downhill
And she gets there just the same

Rich gal she wears fancy perfume,
Poor girl like to do the same
My gal don't wear no perfume at all,
but you can smell her just the same.

Rich girl wears a designer dress
Poor girl she like to do the same
My gal wears a WalMart vest
But she's purty just the same

Rich girl lives in a big brick house
Poor girl she does the same
My gal lives in the LaCrosse jail
It's a brick house just the same

And

here's my quick video of it.

Way more than twenty years before kweskins and sebastian. You can find kweskins version at the website of the ezine "Jugband Rag"
http://nj5.injersey.com/~jugband/

we have had recent threads about jugband music and some of them included this tune. look through the threads over the last couple of weeks. i would suggest a forum search but i have not had any luck getting the search function to work for me lately.

I was always partial to:
Rich gal she wears fancy perfume, poor girl like to do the same.
My gal don't wear no perfume at all, but you can smell her just the same.

We do My Gal in the Irish Band I'm in. Great song and not strictly Irish. The Spoonful got from the days Sebastian played in The Even Dozen Jug Band.

Don

MY GAL

A rich gal she drinks sweet old pineapple juice and poor gal will do much the same,
But my gal she drinks Sterno, (Kiwi shoe polish, Mobil kerosene, anything will do) but she gets drunk just the same.

CHORUS

A rich gal drives a Porsche automobile and a poor gal will do much the same,
But my gal drives a rusty Chevy pickup truck and she's getting round just the same.

A rich gal might kick you, might bop you with a stick, a poor gal might do just the same.
My gal will get a rusty razor and chase you all over town and she'll catch up with you just the same.

"My Gal." Was also done by Lovin' Spoonful and I'll bet we're about to find out that it had already been done for 30 years by lots of others. I think that this was one that singers would pad with whatever hundreds of verses they had floating around, like was done with "Keep on Trucking, Mama." If no one fills in lyrics, I'll do some when I have a little more time - gotta run now,

Does anyone remember the lyrics to a song Jim Kweskin's Jug Band did in the 60's that had this chorus?

Well, I'll be there in the morning if I live. I will be there in the morning if I don't get killed. If I nevermore see you again Be sure to remember me...

Thanks,

Charles Temple
