I heard Brendan Begley sing this at a concert a few weeks ago, and would like to learn it. It's on his CD "We Won't Go Home 'Til Morning." I have the CD, but I'm having trouble making out some of the lyrics, and I was wondering if anyone had them.

This is what I have so far (and I suspect not all of these words are correct):

Interesting. I recognize Begley as a Dingle/Ballyferriter name..do you know where he is from? mg

Yes, apparently he's from Dingle. He's the brother of another fine musician, Seamus Begley.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to this and filling in some more words - that definitely helps.

I'm a bit pressed for time right now, but will have time tomorrow to give the song another listen. I'm hoping that by having your extra words here, I'll be able to figure out a few more myself.

I expect to have time this weekend to work on the lyrics some more. (Last weekend I had out of town guests, and I've still been catching up on things all week.) I'll post whatever final version I come up with, although I'm not sure it will be complete. Looks like Gerry and I are both still stumbling over some of the phrases.

It occurred to me that there are a few people I could ask locally who might be able to help or might have written references for the lyrics, and I'll be seeing them at various points over the next few weeks. So, hopefully, at some point I'll have a full version. I've added the thread to my tracer and will repost again either sooner or later, as things work out. Thanks for your interest.

Tim Dennehy sings a version on his CD "A Winter's Tear". He mentions hearing it from Breandan and describes his own version as "slightly adapted". He says Breandan got words and tune from Tadhg O Flatharta, a fellow Kerryman. No mention of Sean McCarthy.

In fact, some of Tim's verses are significantly different from Breandans. I'll have a listen and try to plug the gaps so far.
