Subject: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Zhenya Date: 05 Oct 07 - 12:33 AM I heard Brendan Begley sing this at a concert a few weeks ago, and would like to learn it. It's on his CD "We Won't Go Home 'Til Morning." I have the CD, but I'm having trouble making out some of the lyrics, and I was wondering if anyone had them. This is what I have so far (and I suspect not all of these words are correct): The Kerry Hills With great affection and recollection I oft times wander Oer memory's lane My dreams of childhood By glen and wildwood Where I roamed and rambled In my boyhood days Chorus: But ah sad memory Is all *** And in my bosom sadder thoughts instill Of the days so merry When we plucked the berry On the verdant slopes Of the Kerry hills I've seen the Atlantic Both wild and frantic Swirl those cliffs With her angry foam Swing back defeated Like *** retreating *** foam and *** From my Kerry home (Chorus) I wonder where Are all my schoolmates Some are dead And far and gone Some are weeping Or in churchyards sleeping Where the West **** With **** (Chorus) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Zhenya Date: 07 Oct 07 - 11:01 AM Gerry, Thanks for taking the time to listen to this and filling in some more words - that definitely helps. I'm a bit pressed for time right now, but will have time tomorrow to give the song another listen. I'm hoping that by having your extra words here, I'll be able to figure out a few more myself. Zhenya |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Zhenya Date: 10 Oct 07 - 01:18 AM Thanks for the additional lyrics Gerry. I've had a very busy few days, but still plan to work on the song some more very soon. If I come up with any additional lyrics, I'll post them. Zhenya |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Oct 07 - 04:30 AM Zhenya, when this thread has run its course, could you try to remember to post a last, best, complete version of the entire lyrics? Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Zhenya Date: 12 Oct 07 - 03:04 PM Joe, I expect to have time this weekend to work on the lyrics some more. (Last weekend I had out of town guests, and I've still been catching up on things all week.) I'll post whatever final version I come up with, although I'm not sure it will be complete. Looks like Gerry and I are both still stumbling over some of the phrases. It occurred to me that there are a few people I could ask locally who might be able to help or might have written references for the lyrics, and I'll be seeing them at various points over the next few weeks. So, hopefully, at some point I'll have a full version. I've added the thread to my tracer and will repost again either sooner or later, as things work out. Thanks for your interest. Zhenya |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: MartinRyan Date: 12 Oct 07 - 06:03 PM Tim Dennehy sings a version on his CD "A Winter's Tear". He mentions hearing it from Breandan and describes his own version as "slightly adapted". He says Breandan got words and tune from Tadhg O Flatharta, a fellow Kerryman. No mention of Sean McCarthy. In fact, some of Tim's verses are significantly different from Breandans. I'll have a listen and try to plug the gaps so far. Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Kerry Hills (Brendan Begley) From: Zhenya Date: 15 Oct 07 - 09:25 PM I spoke to someone this past weekend who was able to give me a complete set of lyrics for Tim Dennehy's version of the song, so I'm posting that here. Thanks to everyone who helped out on this. Zhenya The Kerry Hills It's with great affection and recollection Oftimes I wander over memory's haze In my days of childhood, when in glen and wildwood I ran and reveled in my boyhood days. But the days of childhood are now a memory That in my bosom fond thoughts instill Of the days so merry, when we plucked the berry On the verdant slopes of the Kerry hills I have seen the Atlantic beat wild and frantic And fill the cliffs with an angry foam Turn back defeated, its wild heart beating In thunderous roar from my Kerry home But the seas of childhood are now a memory That in my bosom fond thoughts instill Of the days so merry, when we plucked the berry On the verdant slopes of the Kerry hills I think tonight on my friends and schoolmates Some now lie on a foreign shore While more lie sleeping in a quiet churchyard To the lonesome keen of the west wind's moan |
