At which point during the long, long run of his famous TV show, I mean... I always wondered about that. Was he alive or dead when he introduced the Rolling Stones?

Oh, LH, that's not very nice, now, is it? I know kids made fun of him, but he's moved on into a realm of childhood folklore and I, for one, have a fond place for him in my memories, esp. when he introduced the Beatles! As stiff as he seemed, there has to have been a rebel of sorts lurking within!

Yeah, Eddie V. When he wasn't in New York, he had this place outside of Camp Point, Illinois. Had the first gun rack in the county in his pickup truck, a rusty old 1952 Ford. Eddie V. would run all over the the back roads, drinkin' Atlas Praeger and Stag beer and tossin' the cans over to the passenger side where they'd fall out through the hole in the floorboards. He raised a few hogs, ran a trotline for carp, hung around the Dew Drop Inn in the evenings playing a little pinochle and having a highball or two. Not a bad guy when ya got to know him.

Well, all I can say is, I would've liked to have seen him dance. Like maybe do the Twist. That would have been very cool. I think he missed his calling. He should have had Vincent Price's career instead, doing the horror films for Hammer Studios. He would've been great for that. And Vincent Price couldn't done Ed's TV show. He would've been great for that.

Ed S. show was always interesting and did provide national exposure for many acts including rock and roll, drama, comedy and song. I'm sorry, Lawrence didn't do anything other than provide an outlet for dance for the folks (well, gosh, I guess that was pretty good too, though not much there for my tastes)...Miss Ed and Lawrence (only for the memories of the folks dancing to his music in the front room...not the music, except for those cute singing sisters....)

I don't think I ever saw Lawrence Welk. I certainly heard about him, though.

Welk was the bane of Saturday nights when the weather was bad and you were too young to escape the house...Sullivan was always interesting (except when that god-forsaken Italian mouse was on)...

He was the first to have Elvis and the Beatles. I remember one night when he had some famous opera singer on. We were required to watch - educational, you know. Well my brother and I dutifully sat on the floor in front of the TV and watched and listened soberly until the camera man did a very unfortunate close-up of her face with mouth open. Her vibrating uvula was more than a nine year old could take and we ended up convulsing in laughter on the floor.
Fortunately, my parents saw the humor in it too.

The Muppets, Senor Wences, Barbara Sreisand - for a stiff, he offered quite qa variety of talent.

When he died I remember reading that his real love was acting and he was somewhat bitter that he had never been seen as a leading man. Boggles the mind.

That's not true! A girl in Tupelo, Mississippi named Thelma Mae was the first to have Elvis.

As for the Beatles, are we talking about individual encounters...or the whole group together on one single occasion?

Regarding Ed's unfullfilled acting career...I agree. He should have played horror parts in Hammer films and then Vincent Price could have hosted his variety show instead. Vincent Price was a very warm and urbane man. He would have been great.

Regarding Shatner: Ed Sullivan would have had Shatner on in a flash had he ever realized what a giant the man is. Sadly though, he did not. Realization of Shatner's greatness comes swiftly to some, slowly to others, never to the unregenerate few...

The inestimable Mr. Shatner did indeed make an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in it's 12th. season episode # 540 William Shatner / Lou Costello / Dody Goodman (11/16/1958).

That's a pretty amazing lineup of guests. Fidel Castro appeared (on film) in 1959 on the Ed Sullivan show.

Apparently people who did not cooperate and follow the rules (like the Doors) found out that Ed was boss. They were never invited back.

Jack E Leonard, while hosting a Friars Roast in the 1970s of Don Rickles, introduced Ed Sullivan--who was in the audience--"...I see Ed Sullivan is here today--Hi, Ed,==was the ground cold when you came up this morning".   

He had some other great lines about others---For Flip Wilson--Hey Flip let me make you feel at home here---ALL ABOARD!!.

Richard Pryor did a great riff on Jack E Leonard when he got up=--"...Hey Jack--what shall I call you when I marry your daughter--Dad?"

A great roast that was recorded uncensored---Johnny Carson and Jackie Vernon fairly stole the evening.

Sullivan started as a newspaper writer. The fact that he ended up on TV was just a fluke. And as I recall Elvis made his first TV appearance on Steve Allens show.
