Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Oct 07 - 04:03 PM The Associated Press obituary is here (click). I liked her music when I was a kid - I think it was the musical equivalent of "comfort food," with a strong touch of perkiness. She always seemed like such a nice person. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: Cruiser Date: 18 Oct 07 - 05:12 PM Thanks for that post McGrath. Being an older guy (like you, Sir), Ms. Brewer is a favorite songtress of mine. Thanks to your post I found a song I did not know she recorded that was a favorite of mine by Bobby Vinton, 'She Understands Me' (Dum-De-Da) from 1964. Johnny Tillotson also recorded a chart hit for it in 1964. He Understands Me |

Laverne Baker did the best R&B version of it. The link is a neat version by the great Connie Francis. Tweedle Dee Connie Francis |

Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: GUEST Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:37 AM When I was a student at Henry C. Lea School, in West Philly, Theresa Brewer was at the height of her popularity with hits like "Til I Waltz Again With You" and "Bell Bottom Blues". Acroos the street from our school was an eatery owned by Milton Kellem, who composed her first hits. Her photos adorned the walls of the diner and her music played, constantly, on the jukebox. In an era of perky singers, she was the perkiest. My favorite Brewer song was "The Banjo's Back In Town". Hotcha! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 19 Oct 07 - 02:26 PM I heard her a lot in the early 1950's. She certainly had a prime set of bellows for someone so small. I AM referring, of course, to her vocalizing. She and Georgia Gibbs both had a brassier style than many of their contemporaries and brought a change of pace to recordings from the period. The more performers from that era that move off this mortal coil, the more mortal I begin to feel... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: GUEST,Jim D Date: 19 Oct 07 - 06:14 PM I think her ballads from the 50s & 60s were the best. Many of them were on albums so they didn't make the top of the charts. In my opinion she was the best female vocalist of the mid 20th century. Loved all of her recordings. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: dulcimer42 Date: 19 Oct 07 - 11:06 PM So sad to hear that. I must have been about ten or so when she sang "Ricochet Romance".....I don't want a ricochet romance, I don't want a ricochet love. If you're careless with your kisses, find another turtle dove...." I sang it and sang it with her, on the radio, and I was certain that I sounded just like her. I decided then and there that I wanted to be a singer just like her. I told mom and dad I wanted to take singing lessons. They said there wasn't any future in that, and they signed me up for piano lessons. I stuck with those lessons for about 3 years, hated practicing, and begged to quit. I'm thankful today for those lessons which were my introduction to playing music. And thankful for Teresa, who was my introduction to singing. Today I have quite a collection of instruments, and love playing them and singing. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: pdq Date: 20 Oct 07 - 12:45 PM A quick web search show Teresa Brewer's "Music! Music! Music!" was a million-selling hit in 1950. Nickel Coin, the horse, was the winner of the Grand National in 1951. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: Cruiser Date: 20 Oct 07 - 01:07 PM This thread exemplifies the value and power that music has for all of us. Some very interesting, humorous, and moving human story lines resulted from this young woman's beautiful, uplifting voice. Ms. Brewer was just one of the many music heroes /heroines that have brighten my life and nothing today can match the music of the 1940s, 50s and early 1960s….before those darn Beetles and the British Music Invasion (the Brits got back at us for their whuppin' in the American Revolutionary War by attacking and ruining our music). |
Subject: RE: Obit: Teresa Brewer (17 October 2007, age 76) From: GUEST,Peggy Date: 23 Oct 07 - 08:43 PM Does anyone know what neuromuscular disease she died from? I remember reading it on our local paper (Mt. Vernon, NY, just a couple of miles from her adopted town of New Rochelle)but I had never heard of it. I was going to look it up and then threw away the paper. |
