Hi..I am putting on a workshop soon on this (Sea Shanty Camp recent thread). This is Lower Columbia...not sure where it ends..but maybe Longview? I am guessing. Maybe Portland/Vancouver? Don't know. Maybe further downriver. Anyway, this is not a Woody Guthrie symposium unless he wrote them for this part and I am not aware that he did. I am hard pressed to think of any standard ones, but know some recently composed really really great ones by local people...who unfortunately probably can't join me.

Any suggestions? mg

Hobe Kyter has collected a bunch of songs from that area, and maybe written some new ones. I have some on tape that I could share with you -- contact me offlist.

The Guthrie songs were written specifically to promote the dams and electrification project, so he wasn't concerned with anything downstream of Bonneville Dam, more or less.

mmm...not sure..I am on the wrongoops other side of the river..it would be probably either to Willametter or Columbia...

I was hoping that Hobe would be able to participate..he is an absolute font of knowledge on the whole area and the maritime history and is a wonderful song writer...I will b.c. you...he has written some new ones but I could not do justice to them...one really is fantastic about horse seining in Ilwaco I believe...mg
