Subject: Are their songs that mention Lord Ventry From: mg Date: 20 Oct 07 - 06:11 PM Of course there were a number..particuarly around the time of the famine is what I am wondering...might give some insight into my family's migration etc. I suppose if I ever meet the latest one I shall have to give him a tithe or something...mg |

My wife's family came from there, and in fact her grandfather was born on the Ventry estate. Coliastide, the College of St. Ida across from Dingle, is the old Ventry estate house. |

Subject: RE: Are their songs that mention Lord Ventry From: mg Date: 20 Oct 07 - 06:31 PM I should have said there instead of their..I do that all the time.. I was just sent a fascinating portion of a book, possibly family-produced and never really published..that includes my great-grandfather's brother Patrick and mentions a "Ventry group" that came, worked on the canals, ended up in Clermont Iowa..That group included Garveys (John, Dan, Pat and Timothy, my ggf), probably several Cahalans, including Johanna, Pat's wife..now they might have been from Cork...but there was a Morris or Maurice and a James and a John..that family produced many midwest dignataries..then there were Murphys and Fitzgeralds..they all intermarried...seem to have been some Foleys in the mix. A Margie Murphy M. was looking for the exact group of people as I was..finally got hold of her family and unfortunately she died three years ago..but supposedly there is a Murphy book that her husband will send me... Anyway, it is all very fascinating. I am flummoxed because I didn't even know we had relatives on my father's side..he only had one sister..well I knew about some second cousins the Jucinovichs..and some connection to Bat Masterson..but now I am finding out about hundreds... One landlord in the area and I do not think it was Ventry (an old French family) sent a batch of barely alive famine people to New York and they landed in the 5 corners part of New York..that is where Gangs of New York was about...the sad part was it was a great improvement over their lives in Ireland living 10 to a room with no windows...mg |
