Hello--
Anybody know the words, from way back, to that old song on Joan Baez's first album, called "Fare Thee Well"? Anybody also know where it comes from?
Thanks--Much appreciated1 I learn a great deal from you folk here.

From here.

Fare Thee Well (10,000 Miles) Lyrics
Artist(Band):Joan Baez

Album: Joan Baez (1960)
(traditional)

Oh fare thee well, I must be gone
And leave you for awhile
Wherever I go, I will return
If I go ten thousand miles
If I go, if I go, if I go ten thousand miles

Oh, ten thousand miles it is so far
To leave me here alone
Well, I may lie, lament and cry
And you'll, you'll not hear my mourn,
And you'll, no you'll, and you'll not hear my mourn

Oh, the crow that is so black, my love
Will change his color white
If ever I should prove false to thee
The day, day will turn to night
Yes, the day, oh the day, yes the day will turn to night

Oh, the rivers never will run dry
For the rocks melt with the sun
I'll never prove false to the boy I love
Till all, all these things be done
Till all, till all, till all these things be done

I think the words might be just slightly different in two places...

Oh, ten thousand miles it is so far
To leave me here alone
Well, I may lie, lament and cry
And you'll, you'll not hear my moan,
And you'll, no you'll, and you'll not hear my moan

Oh, the rivers never will run dry
Or the rocks melt with the sun
I'll never prove false to the boy I love
Till all, all these things be done
Till all, till all, till all these things be done

Origins here, plus MCC. Variant in DT (Ten Thousand Miles)
Thread 4015: Ten Thousand

In "The Joan Baez Songbook" of 1964, Amsco, pp. 42-43, with music score.

Oh, G(D)fare thee F(C)well, I G(D))must be gone,
And G(D)leave you F(C)for a D7(A7)while,
Wher G(D)ever I go I Em(Bm)will return,
if I C(G)go    ten G(D)thou- sand Em(Bm)miles,
Em(Bm)...Em... Em(Bm) if I G(D)go
   C(G)   G(D)   if I Em(Bm)go,
if I C(G)go      ten D7(A7)thou - sand G(D)miles.
(hope than makes sense- )

verse 2, 3 corrections by Little Hawk are correct-
-cry, and you, you'll not hear my moan,
And you'll, --- no you'll, and you'll not hear my moan.

A favorite of mine.
