Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Bru Date: 17 Feb 09 - 05:29 AM I bought a Guild GAD 12 last year - very cheaply from a guy who simply couldn't get on with a 12 stringer. He hadn't even got round to putting on the bottom strap button. I think I've said this somewhere else on this forum - but the build quality on this guitar is top- drawer. It has a good bright sound, with an action that's fine as it is out of the box. I personally don't think it sounds as good as my Martin 12 stringer, and I prefer the action of my 40 odd year Epiphone 12 stringer - but the Guild is young, and I know from experience that the sound will improve. One thing I have noticed, though. I normally put D'Addario 10's on all of my 12 stringers and I've always been happy with them. When I replaced what I think may have been the factory originals with the D'Addario 10's, the sound wasn't in the same class. The original strings were heavier. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: alex s Date: 17 Feb 09 - 04:49 AM Love em. Martin Joseph has a great Guild 12 which sounds terrific on stage although he finds it a bit heavy over a long gig. I have a 1979 D28 which I wouldn't part with. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: DonMeixner Date: 16 Feb 09 - 10:52 PM To my way of thinking the older Guild guitar of any string number is the best value for a quality guitar around. Even the new off shore Guilds, GADs, are superior instruments, dollar for dollar. My 63 F-30 is still a fine sounding guitar. My Martin's are nice but they aren't the Guild F 30. I was given a 64 Martin D 12-20 that is a tinny box compared to any Guild 12 I have played from a similar age. D |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: GUEST,kevlawton Date: 16 Feb 09 - 09:29 PM I think Glen Campbell popularized the Ovation 12-string |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Rapparee Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:34 PM It's about the only thing he has left that's worth anything. His second wife's kids pretty much took everything he had and sold it for drugs -- a couple of very very good hunting rifles, a handmade fly rod, a six-string Martin (he thinks it was a D-38), other things. The kids are in jail big-time, but the stuff is long gone. I think it's a damned shame, but he has lots of friends at the Library and he comes in whenever he can. I kid him about getting a sword cane or pretend to swipe his cane or hat and he knows it's me. Herb's just a good old guy who spent his life working for the Union Pacific and has gotten a raw deal at the end. We try to treat him well and he appreciates it. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Stringsinger Date: 20 Feb 08 - 03:29 PM I find that the Guild in general doesn't have uneccesary overtones and that makes it good for recording. Mine is balanced nicely and is pretty new. 12 strings can get pretty cumbersome in their sound so I like it strung light and tinkly. In the early days, Glenn Campbell popularized the 12 string. Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Leadbelly Date: 20 Feb 08 - 01:50 PM Repaire, please don't ask Herb to sell his Guild. Obviously, this instrument became a good friend of him. With such many health problems it could be better not to mention this topic again. I may be wrong because I don't know your friend but his bad condition is not ideal for making such a decision. That's a proposal only, Manfred By the way: I'm not interested in this instrument. I think it was GUEST, OrNole. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Rapparee Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:01 AM No, Herb still has it. He's been having some heavy health issues and I haven't seen him as often as before. He is, after all, 80 years old and has been crippled up with diabetes, heart problems, and now more heart problems. I'll ask him the next time I see him. He'll be in, likely when the weather warms and there's less chance of slipping on the ice. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:32 AM I bought a Guild 12-string back in the early 70's and it is still going strong. It has a very sweet sound. Mine has a number of dints and cracks in it from years of being hawked around in the backs of cars but I wouldn't part from it. A great instrument although big, heavy and a b*****r to tune |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Leadbelly Date: 19 Feb 08 - 01:32 PM refresh- what's about Herb's instrument, Repaire? Sold in the meantime? Manfred |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Leadbelly Date: 13 Nov 07 - 01:33 PM Have to make a correction. My F312-Special was made and bought in 1972. Seems to be a rare version. Manfred |

Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: GUEST,OrNole Date: 12 Nov 07 - 11:34 PM Rapaire, I would still be interested in your friends Guild 12 string. Condition and all and if he is interested in selling. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Rapparee Date: 12 Nov 07 - 10:59 AM Herb says that his Guild is one of the big ones and, in his words, "built like a locomotive." I've been out of town for the past few days and haven't seen him, but he was going to look inside and see if he could find the model and other data. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Leadbelly Date: 10 Nov 07 - 01:39 PM Bought my 12 string Guild in 1970 in HAMBURG/Germany for 1.8oo Deutschmarks which was much money in those days. But it was worth-while. Is anybody aware of the model of my instrument? Inside there's a sticker which says: F 312-Special, Serial No.: 74505. Is there a story behind this model? Thanks, Manfred By the way: don't want to sell this guitar because it's part of my life. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: GUEST,OrNole Date: 10 Nov 07 - 12:02 AM To Repaire. Sorry should have directed this to you. If you friend still has that 12 string Guild, I may be interested in it. |

Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Big Mick Date: 24 Oct 07 - 12:15 AM My mid 1960's Guild 12 string big body has a voice that is so sweet, and an action to die for. I love this big old guitar, and based on my experience, I would say they are the gold standard among production 12 strings. I have played Taylors, Gibsons, Seagulls, and many others. None have the same overall quality as my Guild. If you can't afford to have Nick Appollonia or Grit Laskin build you one, then grab one of the older Guilds. They are heavy buggers with that double truss rod, but the sound and playability is something. Mick |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 07 - 09:47 PM He's not sure yet if he wants to sell it. He told me that he paid US $600 for it to a guy who was "between a hard place and a harder place" and that it's "[his] toy" -- children never touched it! He played it with six strings because of the arthritis that was developing when he got it. I've got a feeling that it's about the only thing of real value he has left and selling it would be like selling a much-loved child. If you play you can understand. He used to play with the "Old Time Fiddlers" -- a truly excellent local group of stringfolks who have been around a long time and try to preserve the local music -- and this tells me that he was quite good. They don't play for a fee, only for a donation -- we gave them $75 to play for an hour or so, and it was split among eight people. Since one of them drove a hundred miles to play, they don't make money out of it. (Undiscriminating, the group even includes banjos.) |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 23 Oct 07 - 07:43 PM I have a very nice Guilds 12 string which i bought second hand about 5 years ago. It was made around 1996 and plays very sweetly. It very rarely goes out of tune and the finger board is slim enough to get a thumb round easily. It has solid mahogany back and sides and was engineered to last so it is a big heavy instument. When I bought it I took it to a very critical local luthier who was happy not to charge me for checking it over as he couldnt find any fault with it. The action is very good. It was' and still is an excellent second hand buy. The day I bouhgt it i tried new Yamahas Martins ang Simon and Patricks and it sounded better than any of them. Kenny B |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Marc Bernier Date: 23 Oct 07 - 06:09 PM I presently live about 3000 yards from the building that housed the factory where Guilds were made for the last 40 or 50 years. Unfortunatly Guild was bought out by a larger "International Corporation" a few years back. To make a long story short, the quality went down then they moved the operation to the other coast, (or somewere else anyway). If you've got a Guild over 10 years old, It's most likely a nice instrument. |

Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: kendall Date: 23 Oct 07 - 04:13 PM They do build good guitars.I had two of them before I found the Taylor. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Wesley S Date: 23 Oct 07 - 03:48 PM With any 12 string the neck will need to be checked to see what condition it's in. I've heard nothing but good things about the larger Guild 12 strings. So far I've never played a small bodied 12 string that I would want to own. YMMV. For my ears the bigger the 12 string the better. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Mark Ross Date: 23 Oct 07 - 03:44 PM Great guitars, if it's one of the jumbo sized ones. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: PoppaGator Date: 23 Oct 07 - 03:38 PM I seem to remember that, back in the 60s, Guild 12-strings were fairly common and were considered to be quite good. I had the impression that the Guild company more-or-less specialized in 12-strings. Perhaps they made more of them (in comparison to their 6-string output) than Gibson or Martin, or maybe it's just that their 12s were more affordable than those sold by their competitors without being terribly inferior. I'm no expert on vintage guitars, however (except for the one that I have owned for years and do not intend to sell.) I'm sure that better answers will be forthcoming from habitual buyers/sellers who know the market inside-out. |
Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Oct 07 - 03:37 PM Click Here And check the links at the top. Much discussed for years around here, but although there are fine twelves built by many, Guild provides a kind of factory benchmark. An excellent ax. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Midchuck Date: 23 Oct 07 - 02:40 PM Does it have a model number in it? Is is a jumbo or one of the small 12s that Guild made only a few of? Peter. |
Subject: Guild 12-String Guitar From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 07 - 02:36 PM A friend of mine here, an old codger, has a Guild 12-String. Anyone know anything about these? Are they any good? Got any idea of what you'd expect to pay for one today? The guitar is in excellent shape, he says. He doesn't know how old it is; he bought it about ten years ago and played it until the arthritis in his fingers and deteriorated hearing forced him to stop. |
