Subject: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 25 Oct 07 - 11:35 AM Some good news for all who contributed to the Broadstairs Folk Week thread this year and asked for there to be an impromptu session in the middle of the afternoon... there now is... It's going to be at the Wrotham Arms, between 3 pm and whenever we get tired- there will be a chairperson to see fair play and a daily guest who will perform a short set mid-session- and this session is for those of us who like to sing and diddle along with each other, instruments of the acoustic variety and songs of the participatory variety especially. The name we have for it at the moment is the Woodshed session, after the story that Harry Cox kept the old tunes alive there because his wife preferred it that way... nothing to do with Cold Comfort Farm! To start things rolling, there's a Woodshed session at the Wrotham Arms on Friday 23rd November, with several of the people who played this year at the Wrotham- so if you're in the area please come along and make yourself known... Sheps beer and sympathetic management... What more could we ask? See you there... Bob |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Richard Bridge Date: 25 Oct 07 - 06:22 PM Good idea. Shame it is that little bit further out, but still a good idea. |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Oct 07 - 07:27 PM Great - I had thought the Wrotham Arms might be the right place to get this going. I think it might actually help that it's just very slightly off the beaten track - it's only a matter of 200 yards at the most from Albion Street. ( Venue Map) |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: GUEST,Byards Leap Date: 27 Oct 07 - 07:29 AM Brilliant! Long way from Lincolnshire for an afternoon session but defintely be there at BF Folk Week. |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Girl Friday Date: 27 Oct 07 - 09:10 PM Good result, means we can go to pub gigs beforehand if so desired. Wrotham Arms is only a short walk from the seafront, straight up from the craft fair. |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Oct 07 - 08:23 PM And it's only a few yards from the Methodist Church, where some of the best concerts take place. |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: GUEST,charlotte the oast ouse opper Date: 29 Oct 07 - 06:13 AM This is great news! Who knows, next year I might actually get to go to a session or four, as previously I have been working/dancing the whole time, but this is the good afternoon slot, where everyone seems to float around a bit...or heads back to the camp site to sleep, having not gone to bed until 5am... yay! Roll on Folk Week '08 x Dillie x |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: HipflaskAndy Date: 29 Oct 07 - 01:50 PM Better in the raw indeed! What will my Lady Pamela say?!! |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 15 Nov 07 - 10:15 AM The 23rd is almost upon us- plenty of interest so far! We're taking as our theme (with permission) the lines from Keith Scowcroft & Derek Gifford: Let Every Man So Pitch His Song / To Help His Neighbour Sing Along... Hope to see y'all there Bob |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: HipflaskAndy Date: 16 Nov 07 - 04:14 AM All the best with your Woodshed Sessions ...named with a due nod to my song, I understand - bless ya! I wrote the song in reference to Harry Cox, for years banished to an outhouse should he want to sing - his wife not wanting that nasty folk stuff in the house - Walter Pardon had similar experience I'm told - but took friends/relations (and ale) out there to sing along, whereas poor Harry just had himself for company! If they'd only known about each others 'sessions' (they didn't live that far from each other!) they'd, no doubt, have formed a 'Boy Band' (hah!)... and called it the 'Woodshed Boys' Folk can hear the song and download (free!) the song via the myspace link someone kindly posted up above - here's the lyric for any interested... Woodshed Boys (D McFarlane) So where d' you learn to sing that way? Where d' you hear those songs you play? All the words I hear you say We owe 'em to the Woodshed Boys And all the tunes you join in on Were saved by generations gone Tradition serving up her song We owe 'em to the Woodshed Boys Ch. The Woodshed boys, the Woodshed Boys You cant sing here - cant stand the noise All the songs we still enjoy We owe 'em to the Woodshed Boys Weve lasses all in sailor blue Poachers bold and ploughboys too Tokens matched and fond adieu We owe em to the Woodshed Boys Where'er you be I'll have you say From Yarmouth Town to Botany Bay O'er the hills or far away We owe 'em to the Woodshed Boys Repeat Ch. Where d' you learn to sing that way? Where d' you hear those songs you play? All the words I hear you say We owe 'em to the Woodshed Boys And who will take the mantle when The cycle must begin again What will become of England then? Once again - hope your sessions are a big success - Duncan Who will be the Woodshed Boys? Repeat Ch. |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 17 Nov 07 - 06:00 AM Looking forward to the first one next Friday- taking as our motto ( with Giff's permission) the lines from When All Men Sing writeen by Keith Scowcroft: Let every man so pitch his song To help his neighbour sing along... which is what a good session is about imho... |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: The Unicorn Man Date: 18 Nov 07 - 04:11 AM I am already singing it with "The Folkaholicks" . Goes down well with folkies and muggles alike. |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Fidjit Date: 18 Nov 07 - 05:51 AM Good news for me as Broadstairs told me they had no more room for artists. Hopefully I'll see you there Chas |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: BB Date: 19 Nov 07 - 04:20 PM Always room for you in the Singarounds, Chas. But I hope the Woodshed sessions aren't going to conflict? Barbara |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Fidjit Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:11 AM Thanks Barbara. Got to catch me soon. Be 75 next year hence my forte over for the July/August circuit in 2008. Chas |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:12 AM Nope, the Woodshed sessions are slotting in as neatly as a dovetail joint... actually I've never tried one of them, can't get the feathers to light... The Woodshed is to run from 3pm- 4.30 ish, at the time when nothing much is going on, and is for musicians and singers alike who want to play together en masse- so Richard will have the chance to diddle along- kind of a drop-in, with the emphasis on playing in keys which are easy to follow and at speeds which the human finger can match! It's an early afternoon replacement for the schoolrooms which went on all night... and we'll all emerge, refreshed, rejuvenated, to bolster the singaround later... 'twill be great! |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:14 AM But of course the first one begins at 8.30 pm this Friday (23rd)- check out the Wrotham Arms myspace for the countdown! |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: wrotham-arms-jen Date: 24 Nov 07 - 01:22 PM Thanks to everyone who supported this event...it was truly a joy. Warm thanks to synbyn who worked really hard in ensuring its success. A special treat for all was hearing Mike Nicholson and the Cartouche (is that still the name?) trio. Thanks to all for making the journey and sharing some tunes. The pics are on myspace Wrotham Arms The next Woodshed Session will be at The Wrotham Arms on Friday Dec 21st. We'll provide the mince pies. Jen (and Tom) Banjiman and G-P thanks for the well wishes...hope to see you in the Woodshed in the future! |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Cap n' Ella Date: 24 Nov 07 - 02:48 PM What a Fabulous evening! Well done Bob for a really well run session, we had a great time. Also thanks to Jen & Tom for the great beer and the very warm Welcome, Re: Cartouche, we're trying to drop the name as painlessly as possible (never did like name dropping) as several venues have already advertised us as such and besides we don't have an alternative yet, but we all have our thinking caps on so we'll come up with something soon........ hopefully Looking forward to coming down to the Wrotham again asap Tony & Lesley PS Jen have PM'd you |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: RamblinStu Date: 25 Nov 07 - 05:44 AM What a great night. Good music, good singing and good beer. It was good to see so many people there too. Fantastic support and encouragement given by the Wrotham Arms as well as Bobs leadership made this a thoroughly enjoyable night. Looking forward to the next Woodshed Session Stuart Pendrill |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 25 Nov 07 - 12:15 PM Yes, great night and thanks to all the singers who came many miles to take part- Mike singing 'when all men sing' was a particular high, bit disappointed in the Welsh birthday girl who toyed with us about the pole-dancing, but you can't have everything... What was great was the way the whole evening gelled and we managed to get some of thet folk week all-in feel... Mike did catch his train, even if he didn't smile... just goes to show that there's hope for live unamplified music, solo song to harmony to tunes no-ones heard before, in a traditional pub. Tom Waits, Dylan, English, Irish, original from Stu, brand-new parody from Lesley& Tony...great variety And thanks to Jenny and Tom for their welcome, too- Made all the difference. See you whenever and wherever, and looking forward to the next one (21st December) Bob |

Aah knaah what yez mean aboot name-droppin' - It's a sure sign of a lack of ability by someone who has te ride along on somebody else's tails - Fame by association. Aah wez just sayin' the same thing te Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy a coupla weeks ago - Shameful isn't it? Although aah'll admit aah dee drop your names wherever aah can - Ye should get doon this neck o' the woods sometimes! |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 14 Dec 07 - 07:14 AM If he's there, he can have it- as long as the music licence allows it... I'm not sure what the situation is regarding singing it in Welsh, which is what happened recently... you couldn't say that the tune was followed, and the words were obviously dofferent... Next session Friday 21st Dec with many fine musicians promised... if you're coming, please come with songs or tunes with which we can all join in- 'Let every man so pitch his song/ to help his neighbour sing along' as the Scowcroft/ Gifford song has it so well. That's what this session is all about... bob |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: synbyn Date: 24 Jan 08 - 09:00 AM Just to clarify what's going on in the Wrotham Arms in folk week: Jen has bands booked in from 1-2.30, and there are other sessions in the rest of town with which we wouldn't wish to clash. So the Woodshed session will begin at three o'clock and carry on until either we get tired or the evening band comes in. (this clarifies the info in Feb/Mar Around Kent Folk) And the next shed session is only about a week away! Feb 1st from 2030.... See you there Bob |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: Richard Bridge Date: 13 Mar 08 - 01:12 PM It occurs to me to mention that there is a music technology and a commercial music course (etc) at the Broadstairs campus of Christchurch University, and maybe you should try putting a poster or two up in their bar to see if any of them can be corrupted. |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: GUEST,synbyn Date: 14 Mar 08 - 08:32 AM Thanks, Richard- yes, all for encouraging new singers, it's what the session's all about... when Phil Beer was at Fav we had the pleasure of listening to a floor singer about to begin that course, who took leaflets and we're hoping we'll see tonight... is corruption the new name for the folk process? ! |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Mar 08 - 06:46 PM "...is corruption the new name for the folk process?" It wouldn't be a bad name for a band... |

Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: GUEST,synbyn Date: 15 Jan 10 - 05:45 AM This message today 15/1/10 No Woodshed tonight, I'm afraid - No, it's not the weather! The WOODSHED will continue during folk week, it is anticipated, but not out of season, due to a change of musical policy- Fridays and Saturdays being needed to maximise income in these difficult times for businesses. So thanks to all who attended woodsheds over the past three years- 173 of us by ny count- and made so many evenings to remember- always different and what a pity we haven't any recordings because when the pub bounced they were great nights! Thanks to all the guest musicians, who all encouraged and drove the sound for the rest of us. There is an offer of Weekday nights- your views appreciated... but without guests, more of a session.. There will be a Mixer/ Bob Kenward & Steve Moreham concert Session in the Good Intent, Rochester, on Tuesday 9th Feb... Big thanks again- Bobxx |
Subject: RE: Broadstairs Woodshed Sessions From: broadstairs-jen Date: 15 Jan 10 - 12:57 PM Bob, Thanks for everything you have done in making this session so much fun. I know that you put a lot of planning and effort into making it look and feel like a spontaneous session. What wonderful memories and great friends made from these sessions. Glad to hear they will be going on in Folk Week. See you in Rochester if not before! Jen |
