Just a thought, but looking a the various net auctions and only occasionally seeing something of interest to me, I was thinking that maybe we who are always after old and unusual instruments or looking to part with one might be really pleased to find an auction made for us. Any thoughts or possibilities or is there one already?

Chet W.

Well, we all know it's up and running. I am wondering how often any of us look at it and also, if we should have an ongoing thread, or a new one each week, which lets us know when new items have come in and/or when bidding on an item is about to close. I am thinking along the same lines as Wally at Camsco who is letting us know, by thread, what new items have been added each week.

After Bert mentioned that items do not have to be music-realted, I've added two items there, today. One of them is an experiment, of sorts.

So what do you think, Mudders?

Thanks, kat

Maybe I should start a thread mentioning the eight or nine CDs Folk-Legacy has released since Max downloaded data from our web site. Some are CD re-issues of earlier recordings, and some are new productions. I've not announced them here, because doing that seemed like too much of a hustle, even with a percentage going to the Mudcat Manor. I'll act on whatever advice I get from the Mudcatters who respond to this thread.

Don't just leap in saying "Do it!" Think about it. I know we don't want to turn our community into a marketing tool. Camsco and Folk-Legacy are both commercial (meaning "for profit") enterprises, although God knows neither of us has ever made much money at it.

What say you all to this?

Sandy

Sandy, you want to sell them, but we want to buy them. It's not like anyone is shoving anything down our throats - it's more a sharing of information than advertisement. How do we know when Folk Legacy recordings are released unless you tell us?

An alternative to detailed messages could be an announcement that your catalog has been updated and an invitation to visit a web page with information on the new releases.

Sandy- Calling Folk-Legacy a profit-making organization suggests that you're getting delusional. Post away!

Good grief Sandy ----- No, I won't just say do it when I have an all too infrequent chance here to give YOU advice instead of listening and learning from you, which has been one of my bigger joys at the 'Cat.

I was the first to post on Wally's thread to say it didn't bother me in the least and I think you'll find that most of us here that you know so well would not think badly of you in any way.......More to the point, I believe that most would view it as part of our "continuing education" compliments of Sandy and Caroline! Do you really believe that there is anyone here that would think it was a "hustle?" If you know of someone who might be thinking in that direction, send them to me or Mick or Rick and we'll be happy to give them an "attitude adjustment," No Charge.

I would suggest you do it in the same vein that endears you to the "Village" and that is through the passing on of your knowledge which we all so much respect. Every week or two or once a month, give us an update on what's new at Folk-Legacy, recording wise with a brief write up on each. Be sure you "Blue Clicky" your website in the post. And then, maybe you "feature" an album each month that can be ordered through the 'Cat with an additional incentive. I'm not trying to give away your money, but maybe an extra 10 to the 'Cat or 5/buyer and 5/Cat might give the buyer (me) a warm fuzzy that we were helping everyone involved. Copy and Paste or wrute something of a description of the Featured Album with one of your personal stories attached. This would also keep the thread active if some of us who had the CD already could comment on it too.

By all means and in whatever way you want...(can I say it now?)...DO IT! I think I would title the thread something like "Folk-Legacy, September Features" and in so doing we could get used to looking for it like the "Thought for the Day" thread. Monthly might be good simply because it would give some a chance to order and hear the CD and then comment too. You know, like, "I have listened to this miserable recording for the past 8 hours and find it lacking in any musical or redeeming social value and I'm really pissed that you would even send such trash through the mail, you simple ass old fart!"........Seriously, it would be a great way to get some instant feedback for our sake...not yours. Like right now, I'm dying to tell what I think of the Edna Ritchie tape, but I'm not going to do it here.

Start a "Folk-Legacy Feature"....Start it soon...It WILL be well received. And like I said, if someone thinks you're "profiteering" you can either say "Yes, I am!!! I'm Frank Proffitteering and you should be too" or simply call in the Mudcat Mafia (no gothic gutter device too large) and we'll make them an offer. First we'll give them Joe..................

MUDCATTERS: You know folks, the "Liner Notes" on a Folk-Legacy Album are worth the price of the album!

And lest anyone interpret my suggestion for a web page pointer instead of a detailed message as an implication I'd prefer that - nope, 'twasn't. Just in case 1) Sandy, Wally, etc. didn't want to type the whole thing, or 2) people bitched about it. (Probably won't happen unless a bunch of other companies join in to the point where we get a boatload of updates.)

My position on this is well known. If profit-making is defined as making barely enough money to pay the bills, as long as you still do "gigglets" to supplement the income, so that you can keep the music you have devoted your life to out there, then you may feel free to "hustle" me at any and every opportunity. I have felt for some time now that I wanted to see more of Folk Legacy in these precincts. You are an honored member of this club and your products help me to continue the journey. I would suggest that you follow my dear friend and potato watcher, Mr. 'Spaw's advice. I would be grateful if you would.

And I will be waiting for the call to perform an attitude adjustment, if needed. Yes, I do housecalls.

All the best, my friend,

Mick

I second that emotion. The announcements would be welcome, and if the threads are named clearly, a person would have no difficulty choosing to read/not to read. It's not like the phone ringing in the middle of a quiet evening and you don't know who it is 'til you answer it. The Mudcat Forum seems to me almost like Caller ID (which I'll admit I haven't tried) - you don't have to answer the call, and those who welcome it (me and all those other yea-sayers) will pick it up and thank you.

So far, so good. I'll wait until a few more returns are in, however. I like the "caller ID" analogy, Dani. If I decide to go ahead with it, the threads will be clearly identified as... well, what would you suggest?

Sandy, I think Spaw is right. Offer them for sale and anyone that wants to buy can. We won't know what's available, however, unless you tell us. I like Spaw's idea of a Thread that announces Folk Legacy's _____ (monthly) release too.

I think it would be a good idea to have added in auction threads, cause I don't always remember to check it. Just placed a bid, and an auction, too, so this thread did it's job!

When I think of the quality stuff Sandy has sponsored over the last 30-100 years, I want to know what the latest masterpieces might be. Will I be able to buy them all? Not likely, but there will be that occasional irisistable item that just begs to come to my house. I won't ever find out about them at Media Play and it will be my loss. If any of the items generate enough sales to keep the power company from turning off Sandy's lights, so much the better. I would consider that a community service, cause if his lights stay on then there is the chance that someone will come buy and record some more great music. From last Wednesday through Saturday we had over 5.5 inches of rain here on the northern prairie. The incessant rain brought on a attack of "I've got to listen to some Gordon Bok." I started and couldn't stop: the old LP's "Peter Kagan", "Seal Djiril", "Fundy", "Water Over Stone", "Turning Toward the Morning" all exist because of Sandy's label (To be fair I listened to Gordon & Cindy Kallet CD and Gordon's old Verve LP, too). A periodic update of what's new at Folk-Legacy would be kind of like the Lionel Trains wish-books I drooled over as a kid. In fact, if Sandy doesn't take this opportunity, I think a group should get together, go to Connecticut, and twist his tuning pegs until he changes his tune.

Max,

I just saw the active items listing on the main thread page. That is a great way to let us know, quickly, what is in there. Thanks!

Sandy....I am chiming in, although I think you already knew my feelings. Wally does a nice job on this and you should not hesitate to start a thread with new additions, too!

I think the "Folk Fogey" has given in at this point and I apologize for the harassment. But Sandy, we're friends here and if "selling" bothers you, remember, "You have to sell to your friends 'cause youe enemies won't buy from you."

Spaw - awaiting the first thread
