I'd call it plain old ragtime jazz. Doesn't sound like any of the Bob Wills I've heard and love. Sure doesn't fit country or western, imo. Does look as though they had fun, though!

Obviously we're a little short on jazz lovers here tonight, but kat has it right. Lyman was very big in the 20's and 30's preparing the way for what became the Big Band era.

There is that wonderful scene in the film ' The Blues Brothers ' where the band steal someone else's gig at Bobs Country Bunker, Jake asks the barmaid what kind of music the usually have, she replies, " we have both kinds, country AND western."

Anyone interested in the roots of Rock'n'Roll, Western Swing or modern Country needs to get some Milton Brown. He actaully invented Texas (=Western) Swing by playing 1920s-based Jazz with more of a string band sensibility, rather than the brass-based music from which his style was derived.

Proper has a set of 4 CDs for about $22.50 US (Proper Box 59). Is is almost an essential part of the history of US popular music. Milton Brown died is a car wreck in 1938 and was almost forgotten due to the success of his friend Bob Wills.

One of Brown's numbers called "Talking About You" seem to take the old song "Chicken Reel" and mutate it into proto-Rock'n'Roll. It was recorded in 1934! Brown also had the most amazing electric giutar player who used a lap steel to produce lead guitar chops. This is 40 years before "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow. Even did "fuzz tone". Fun stuff.

oh what fun! Check out Leon McAuliffe and his Western String Band. Here's what it says about him:


One of the firsts to play the electric steel guitar. Leon was one of the early members of the Light Crust Doughboys, then onto Milton Brown's Brownies. Recorded for Brunswick in 1933, then of course became one of the lead members of The Texas Playboys, 1935 to 1942. Wrote the first big hit for the Playboys "Steel Guitar Rag" in 1936. Sang lead vocals on several Playboys records,such as "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Miss Molly", "Oh! You Beautiful Woman". In 1942, was called into the Service. After the service in 1946, formed his own band the Cimarron Boys. In July 1949, charted another written tune as Leon Mcauliffe & his Western Swing Band, "Pan Handle Rag", it got to #6. Later, Bob Wills and several others would do a cover version. Between 1961 to 1964 charted three records. Then in 1971, joined with Tompall Glaser and The Glaser Brothers on a cover of "Faded Love". Basically it's because of Leon that the electric steel guitar became an important element in Country Music.
In 1973, he re-joined the Playboys on the final Bob Wills album "For The Last Time".

Actually, Milton Brown's steel guitar player was Bob Dunn, who played "Hawaiian Style", with the guitar on his lap. He sometimes reverted to a more melodic Island Music sound, but usually tried for a bluesy sound and a very hard edge that cut through the crowd at dances. Western Swing is, first and foremost, dance music. At times he over-drove his small amp and pruduced a very distorted sound that would have been a home in Grunge Rock.

Also, Milton Brown died on April 18, 1936 from injuries suffered in a wreck on April 12.

Abe Lyman was very popular in his time, as were Ben Selvin and Milton Brown, though time has not kept their names alive very well. But since they were all very good,discovering them is pleasant surprise.

Lyman led a Jazz band with roots in the sound of Paul Whiteman. His doing Western Swing and having his boys trade their yarmulkes for cowboy hats is a novelty.

I realize I'm generalizing but I'm not fond of most western music, cowboy tunes and music relating to the West, as I see it.
   
    On the other hand, I am fond of some of what I consider country-folk,e. g., John Prine and country music as sung by the likes of Dolly Parton, Tom T. Hall and, of course ,Hank Williams.I also love Johnny Cash.

    I also love songs of the Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers but how would one label their music, country-folk or folk-country maybe?

a lot of innovative players came from the Western Swing style.. Barney Kessel, Billy Bird, Speedy West, etc... kinda like Django with spurs...

That's ragtime jazz. The cowboy costumes weren't the normal attire for Lyman's band, or orchestra as it was called.

I think the industry is confused, too. They are advertising the Eagles as the major stars for the Country Music Awards which are coming up. I've never thought of the Eagles as "country!"

the Egos are back on the country charts after many years absence (from the country charts) with an earler, simpler "Take it Easy" sound....They had a huge influence on many of today's stars in that melieu.... tho' I consider most 'new country' as rock&roll with a condom..

Garth Brooks biggest influence for his stage shows was 'Kiss'... That's why people such as Allison Krause are refreshing.....Then again, she's just done a cd with Robert Plant...so the lines are blurred, even without the Jack Daniels y'all.... anyhow, watch out Joe Walsh,,, Brad Paisley will kick your ass on 'axe'.....
