Has anyone got the text from the Andy-Stewartsong Dr. Finlay?
It seems to be very funny, but I guess I don't understand all the jokes.

Thank you.

"1965
Andrew Cruickshank born December 25th 1907 in Aberdeen
Bill Simpson born September 11th 1931 in Danure, Ayrshire
Andy Stewart's Scottish ballads became familiar to British record buyers during the early 1960s. He provided a curious blend of comic and patriotic ballads including 'Donald Where's Your Troosers' and 'A Scottish Soldier'

This record was a brief return to comedy based on the enormous popularity of the TV Series 'Dr. Finlays Casebook'.

Although set in the 1920s the show became a virtual 'soap' opera , but was brilliantly acted by a very appropriate cast.

Andrew Cruickshank played the senior partner; slightly old fashioned and yet a highly competent and well loved G.P. Dr. Cameron, in the fictional village of Tannochbrae.

Cameron's junior partner was Bill Simpson who played the much younger, and often headstrong Dr. Finlay. Both doctors were served well by their faithful housekeeper, 'Janet' played by Barbara Mullen."

A bit of trivia, Barbara Mullen was not Scottish.
Barbara Mullen (Janet) was born in Boston USA and was the daughter of Pat Mullen who was in the classic documentary "Man of Aran" by director Robert Flaherty, and she married the film's camera man John Taylor.

If you can get a copy of Man of Aran it is well worth the effort, I think it was made in the mid 1930s.

More trivia...

Andrew Cruikshank was in Olivier's film of Richard III - I believe he was Sir Robert Brakenbury, Lieutenant of the Tower.

He spent much of his time looking bewildered. Probably thinking "What HAS Larry got on his nose?"

Here's a wee picture of Dr Finlay, Janet, Dr Cameron and the local policeman on a nice sunny day in Tannochbrae

I used to know the song Dr. Finlay by Andy Stewart. I hope someone remembers the lyrics and posts them.
Best Wishes
Jude

Not only Dr. Snoddy, don't forget Mistress Niven, either...

More trivia: the series was filmed in and around Callender in Perthshire (where my grandpa came from) - a beautiful part of the world.

Sorry, I don't know the words of the song, but I do remember hearng it.

Andy Stewart's recording of DR FINLAY is on the album "20 Scottish Favourites" which is available from Amazon.co.uk. There is supposed to be a sound sample on that page, but it didn't work for me.

A snippet I recall,

'........he travels far
in his little car
And all the lassies say
You should never eat an apple
'cos it keeps the doctor away!'

Had a quick squint on You Tube to see if any use - not for your request, but did find this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0sAitY3y9mY

'The Scottish Soldier'.

The mentions 'the green hills of Tyrol'

As far as I know, Tyrol's in Switzerland, a country that's refrained from conflicts over the last few centuries.

I'm therefore puzzled as to what involvement a Scottish soldier may have had on duty in that area.

Anyone know?

Many Scotsmen served in foreign armies, even before the '45 and exile for those involved. I assume this one would have been in the Austrian army.

Nowadays, Tyrol lies partly in Austria and partly in Italy - the borders were different before 1918.

Quote from Wikipedia: "The Green Hills Of Tyrol" is a popular bagpiping tune, as a 3/4 retreat march. It is one of the best known, and oldest tunes played by pipe bands. It was originally transposed by Pipe Major MacLean in Crimea, during the Crimean War.

maybe this may help
http://kilby.sac.on.ca/ActivitiesClubs/cadets/Piping/GreenHillsofTyrol.htm

and if you listen to the song scottish soldier theres mention of foreign hills in the chorus suggesting far away country and that the hills are not in scotland

Because those green hills are not highland hills
Or the island hills, they're not my land's hills
And fair as these green foreign hills may be
They are not the hills of home

DR FINLEY
Words by Andy Stewart, music by Neil Grant.
As sung by Andy Stewart, 1965.

1. In the land of bonnie Scotland lives a doctor of great fame,
In a place called Tannochbrae, and Doctor Finlay is his name.
All the ladies of the parish, whether bold or quite demure,
Will agree with you and me that Doctor Finlay is the cure.

CHORUS: Oh, Doctor Finlay, we will all agree,
Is without a doubt—let's shout it out—the finest wee GP.
He travels far in his little car and all the ladies say:
"Oh, we'd never eat an apple 'cause it keeps the doctor away."

2. [Janet:] Doctor Finlay, Doctor Finlay is a fine young man,
And I’m proud to be housekeeper to him and Doctor Cameron.
Sometimes I hear them argue and the air turns blue,
But I have the last word, for I just say: "Mm-hmm." CHORUS

3. [Doctor Snoddy:] Oh, my! That Doctor Finlay, he's a stickler for the truth.
He thinks his practice makes him perfect, and he's the confidence of youth.
He insists on modern methods in the medical dominion,
But as the man with the wooden leg said: "It's a matter of a pinion!" CHORUS

4. Doctor Finlay, may I remind you that you aren't always right.
Take the case of old McPherson that you diagnosed the other night.
You pronounced the man to be dead and had us all in quite a funk.
The poor old soul was dead alright, man—dead drunk! CHORUS

Dr Finlay Andy Stewart
