Whitby Lifeboat Shanty Session This Weekend

Saturday 10th November will see Shanty Groups from all over the UK converging on Whitby Friendship Rowing Club to join in celebrations for Captain Ken Stocks as he arrives at his Sixtieth Birthday. What better way to celebrate this landmark birthday is there than to fundraise for a good cause The Whitby Lifeboats.

Very windy tonight for flying over Mrs Duck but it should be fine and sunny as usual in Whitby. Its a smashing late night drive back over the Moors people as long as you do not drink and drive. Everyone was heading down to the Board on Friday Night and I can see a bit of tuning up going on around Whitby during the Day on Saturday before the concert at the Fishermens. I'm just back home from a gig in Hull so I'll be lamding around Lunchtime Saturday.

Look out for notices about a shanty weekend at Beverley based on boats on and pubs around Beverley Beck over the Bank holiday weekend at the end of May 2008. Being organised by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society.

Hello Mr Tyrral,
I'm sat hear chuckling away at your past misfortune. I don't know how the secret got out about your rescue. Still you did go round the country telling people how I got locked between two doors, overnight, at BBC Radio Leeds then you dedicated two tunes that you had written about my escapades to me.

Still a fuss about nothing if you ask me plenty of people get cut off by the tide walking back from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby. At least it was just the Inshore Life Boat and not the Helicopter that had to rescue Rodger Sutcliff and his Dog.

The tide nearly cut me off, walking back from Robin Hoods Bay, a few weeks ago. It would not have been my fault if I had been cut off. I did ring the local Ramblers Group for advice before setting off but they just went on and on and on.

I think we all had a wonderful night celebrating Ken Stocks 60th Birthday and raising a few Bob for the Whitby Life Boat. I would like to thank all Ken's friends who turned up to support the night. There was plenty of surprise Guests as well including the man who invented the Cross Word I can't remember his name just now it was P something T something R.

The only sad moment was went the oldest deckchair attendant in the world from Scarbourgh collapsed and it took three people half an hour to put him back up again.

One of the Guests was arrested for injecting himself with battery acid! A Police spokes person said that they were charging him every morning!

Ha ha! Very entertaining George! - but Ronnie Corbett will be furious.I've switched my allegiances to the Mountain Rescue now - falling off rock faces is quicker than being stranded by the tide.

I know Gordon but if I had told the truth about some of the Guests no one would have believed me. I give you an example there were two female guests going round proposing marriage to every single man in the room. They said they were practicing for the 29th of February 2008.

Ok! I'll tell you what for every "Also there was Mr and Mrs Carrot and there daughter Henrietta!" type guest I will personally donate 25p to the money raised for Whitby Lifeboats on the 10th of November 2007 until the 1st of December 2007. I am counting additions to this thread with the also there guests and they have to be funny. I'm not counting the number of additional guests. Lets get the total over the £500 pound mark!

Yes I realize I will be poor after this but on the up side maybe the Girls just want a rich husband and they will refrain from proposing to me again on the 29th of February!

CABIN CRUISER OVERTURNS IN HORRENDOUS CONDITIONS

(WHITBY)

Humber Coastguard are currently co-ordinating assistance to an overturned cabin cruiser Last Call which left Whitby Harbour earlier this morning in horrendous sea conditions.

A call was received at just after 12.15 am which reported concerns by Whitby lifeboat personnel that the small cabin cruiser with three people on board was leaving the harbour in rough sea conditions producing waves of 20 to 30 foot just outside the harbour wall.

Shortly afterwards, and around 50 to 100 foot out from the harbour wall, the vessel was overturned in those rough seas. An emergency call was made to the Coastguard by a female on board. From a visual sighting from the harbour wall a person was seen struggling in the water who was wearing a lifejacket.

A further report from an off duty policeman on the sea wall suggested that there was a further person in the water directly between the walls whilst the one seen earlier was drifting out to sea, although it was difficult in the swell and spray to see those individuals. They were described to be struggling in the swell and in serious difficulties.

The Coastguard immediately requested the use of a rescue helicopter and the Whitby lifeboat was also launched. The Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team were also deployed to the east pier.

Two men were recovered from the water 100 yards from the West pier fairly soon after and the rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield airlifted a female from the water directly to James Cook hospital.

The whole area has now been taped off and people directed away due to the deteriorating weather conditions.

The two males after being worked on at the lifeboat station by paramedics were taken to hospital by road and air ambulances.

Mike Bill, Rescue Co-ordination Centre Manager at Humber Coastguard said:

We do not understand why these people went out in such conditions and they are clearly paying a price for their actions. We can only warn again that the sea is a killer and that in these very rough conditions individuals must be aware of the risks that they take when approaching or going out on the sea. We would like to particularly praise the lifeboat personnel at Whitby for alerting the authorities to the sea conditions, the passage of the vessel and the unfolding incident.

Follow-up to Tyke's post: they did not make it.   Following taken from BBC local news. The sea takes no prisoners.

"An marine accident inquiry has begun into the deaths of three people whose boat capsized in "atrocious" seas off the North Yorkshire coast.

Two men and a woman who were rescued later died after the 24ft cabin cruiser, Last Call, overturned and sank just outside Whitby Harbour on Friday.

A force eight gale warning was in place and the sea swell was 20-30ft high.

Rescuers were praised for their efforts to save the people, who were thought to be from Redcar.

High seas had earlier forced Scarborough Council to seal off the West Pier.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has begun a preliminary examination into the capsize at abotu 1215 GMT.

A Whitby RNLI spokesman said the cruiser went out in "atrocious weather conditions".

A coastguard spokesman said: "The cruiser appears to have left Whitby Harbour and got into difficulties about 100 yards from the sea wall."

Lifeboat workers could see 16ft (5m) waves crashing into the boat as it headed out of the harbour.

They tried three times to radio the vessel warning it to turn back, without making contact.

"Soon after leaving the harbour the boat was seen attempting to turn around but capsized in the rough seas," the RNLI spokesman said.

Coastguards received a 999 call from the woman on board after the two men were swept overboard.

The lifeboat rescued the men 100 yards from the West Pier.

A rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield pulled the woman from the sea and took her to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Killer sea

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Witnesses have commented on the brave actions of the Whitby lifeboat crew and the helicopter crew, both operating in very challenging circumstances."

A man and the woman died soon after the rescue and the second man died after several hours in hospital.

Roy Weatherill, Whitby RNLI lifeboat operations manager, said: "The lifeboat launched very quickly and the crew did an absolutely magnificent job to recover the two people from the water."

"The guys tried to give mouth-to-mouth and first aid, that was their priority until the paramedics took over.

"They are naturally very upset."

Mike Bill, rescue co-ordination centre manager at Humber Coastguard, warned people to be wary of going out on to rough seas.

"We can only warn again that the sea is a killer and that in these very rough conditions individuals must be aware of the risks that they take when approaching or going out on the sea," he said.

A spokesman for the Whitby Watchkeepers, a voluntary organisation that provides back-up for coastguards, said that no other boats had left the harbour yesterday."
