By her peers, other musicians. I suppose a lot comes down to personal taste.

There is no doubt that Dinah Washington is talented.

Reasonable voice, ugly as a jail door, dreadful songs, knows how to court publicity though, but is a lousy example/role model for young people. On the other hand, Pete Doherty's just a waste of oxygen..

The press, the record company, the hypocritical finger pointing public are just as guilty on playing up her addiction.

Regardless, when you scrape away all the (tragic) addiction, underneath it all this very young woman has talent .... but again, what waste.

Yes, it's a terrible waste, and you're probably right about the record company and press, but the public are only being manipulated by them - that's how it works. That's why she's being talked about on here. I still don't think she has the talent to merit the attention she gets, although that is obviously subjective.

She's got a good voice, I just don't particularly like what she does with it. It'd be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff, and besides, if that were the case, how could I then have superior tastes? :-)

Interesting singer, interesting songs, interesting image (which I've only raised because it's already been made an issue in this thread) .... Role model? Since when did we judge musicians on their suitability as role models? From Schubert to Billie Holiday to Jimi Hendrix there've always been those who are mad, bad and dangerous to know ... where's the problem? Surely only the very deluded think that aping the dangerous lifestyle of a "difficult" star will make them just as talented?

The really bad role models are the likes of Victoria Beckham, whose success can really convince young women that all you need in life is an eating disorder, a lot of cosmetic surgery and an equally rich and famous husband - no talent or real effort required.

I say good luck to Amy W - hope she kicks the habit before it kicks her.

lost touch when i moved up north to be a student and become a folkie..

first time now i thought about her for years..

So many talented people are on the circle that Amy's on. I feel really sorry for her. I happen to think she's got an incredible voice.

But only she can pull herself out of all this. Only Amy can change her world for the better, and she has to **want** and decide to do that in the first place. Everyone else can only help as best they can, but without her input things ain't going to get better.

A few years ago Amy appeared with Jules Holland and his band on Hootenany New Years Eve. She was brilliant a real star. I saw her recently in a Music Festival ,she was singing out of tune and in a mess. I agree with the thread title. It would appear that she cannot cope with the pressure. If it is just publicity then it isn't working. A great shame, but I wish her well and hopefully wait for her to recover from her current crazy lifestyle.A great talent in limbo.
