Does anyone have a video or dvd copy of this film put out by the BBC in 1985 please. There's a wonderful amount of trad. music and step dancing in it. I believe the title was: "Down Home--Appalachia to Nashville."

It was made in 1985, hosted by Aly Bain--who plays with the other musicians in it, and features Elizabeth Cotten, Mike Seeger, Tommy Jarrell, Carol Mallett, Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker, J. P. and Anadeene Fraley, Mark O'Connor, Peter Rowan, and probably others.

It was a great series (or if I'm not mistaken there were two series). I have two vinyl albums that came out at the time. Aly also did a series called Aly Bain Meets the Cajuns as a follow up.

I'm pretty sure this was done for Channel 4 (UK) rather than the BBC.

Refreshing this, as I'd dearly love to get a CD or DVD of this.

I've got the original LP albums on a cassette, but I'm running out of machines to play it on.

Anybody know if it's available?

There is a cd but it doesn`t seem to cover all the music from the series.

It is called The legendary Down Home Recordings - the compact collection - made by Lismor Recordings, 42 Kilmarnock Road, Glasgow, Scotland G41 3NH

Found it on the net here:

Hope this helps - good luck

I'd love to know, too- I often think of one particular episode which we had on video (home recorded) of Cape Breton.

It was the first I had heard of Cape Breton music, and found it fascinating. We loved the ceili dancing and the sheer life in the music.

"Down Home" with Aly Bain

It appears that at last the programmes might be available for downloading in torrent format from www.TheBox.bz - you have to register first. Then search for the term 'aly bain'

Additionally search with the Include Inactive option

Also search the Requests

HOWEVER it appears that the files are not available for much of the time - that is there are few (one only?) seeders / leachers / peers.

To access the torrent (control) files register with TheBox (free).

Search for each programme, then click on the title. Then click on the link to download the torrent.

Use Google to locate uTorrent or BitTorrent P2P software. Download one of these, install it, then start it up. Use the menu option File / Add Torrent - then start it downloading.

Since its a peer-2-peer file sharing system there may be uploads as well as downloads. That's OK. That's how file sharing works.

Apparently there are at least four programmes available:

There are loads of Transatlantic sessions programmes available too.

To see how the uTorrent / BitTorrent programme works try a recent popular series such as SpringWatch 2009 first. This will take a few hours (only) to download.

If anyone succeeds in downloading one of the "Down Home" programmes please announce this so that it may be possible to arrange some DVD / CD swops.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your message.

Yes, we are hoping to bring out the DOWN HOME series of programmes. They were only cleared for broadcast on Channel Four, so there is a significant amount paperwork to clear all the artists, and as you are probably aware, several are no longer with us.

Hope we get there before too long, and thanks again for your interest,

Best wishes

Aly Bain, Mike Alexander and Douglas Eadie at Pelicula Films were all incredibly helpful in helping us get permissions for the "Green Rolling Hills" track on the Utah Phillips tribute - Singing Through the Hard Times. That was originally done for another series - The TransAtlantic Sessions I.

I am incredibly impressed by all that these good folks have done and would enthusiastically recommend picking up anything they have put their good hands to. These folks remember what it's all about. And they make some phenomenal music across continents.

Dan

I think that the Fiddle Music torrent is a combined hires version of

* GOOD TIMES DOWN HOME AND BACK HOME (22/03/1986)
* FROM APPALACHIA TO NASHVILLE (01/03/1986)

at 3.5Gb this is a tad large.

I have to say that my primary interest in these programmes is for the step dancing rather than the fiddle playing.

As soon as the DVD is issued I shall make a purchase. These kind of programmes are all too rare.

Great to see the e-mail from Mike Alexander of Pelicula Films that they hope to get the Down Home series out on DVD. Have to echo the comment about Mike being very helpful - I e-mailed him a year or two back about the possibility of the Transatlantic Sessions (and Down Home!)being issued on DVD, and as I'm sure you know, Transatlantic Sessions series 3 and the original series are now available, and I believe they're trying to get Series 2 out as well. Incidentally, they've recorded a 4th series recently which is due to be broadcast soon.

This was a real turning-point for me, this show. I ended up playing a lot more music from different traditions as a result of seeing it, especially Scottish music. I still have it on VHS - I taped it at the time. I recall taping 'The Mysteries' from the National Theatre in London at the same time as well as the original 'Edge of Darkness' series with Bob Peck. Still got them somewhere, as well.

Carol - great dancing on the film.

Unfortunately due to performing rights restrictions AFAIAA the films will never be released on dvd. There are cds of the sound track avaiable on Amazon (and maybe eBay) though.

Clips apparently have been uploaded to YouTube - incl. Tommy Jarrell.

Please PM me for further info.

The films were a defining moment not only for fiddle playing but also step dancing.

However there is also another commensurate film - available for free viewing: Talking Feet by Mike Seeger.
