Subject: Collective Noun for ballads From: GUEST,stagemanager_x Date: 13 Nov 07 - 11:42 AM After listening to Norman Kennedy sing and talk at MIT last night, a couple of us were discussing ballads. The recent "Ballad Blast" at NOMAD came up and I found the term a little unsatisfying: maybe a blast of sea chanteys, but a blast of ballads?! We quickly moved from event names to collective nouns, and came up with: a quarrel of ballads a length of ballads a sitting of ballads ...but I know there's better. So who out there has a good collective noun for ballads? |

Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: GUEST,Young Buchan Date: 14 Nov 07 - 09:18 AM A May morning of ballads. I can't believe I am the first pedant to point out that technically these are Nouns of Assembly, not Collective Nouns. Collective Nouns are unqualified by their constituent elements e.g. The Navy, mankind,Parliament, (not a Navy of sailors, a mankind of people, a Parliament of crooks). |

Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: GUEST,John Wilson Date: 20 Dec 07 - 11:14 AM The difficulty here may be as in our old friend John Barleycorn. A handful of corn, a sack, a row, a stand, a sheaf, a garner. Depends on situation. A singer may present a sequence of ballads. Several singers would bring us a succession. In a book a collection. A murder of crows describes them wherever they are, as does a charm of finches. I like 'garner' as in 'Garners Gay'... |
Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: GUEST,Eric Date: 20 Dec 07 - 11:20 AM A Bastard of Ballads |
Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 20 Dec 07 - 05:06 PM I recommend A fascination of ballads. Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: Sorcha Date: 20 Dec 07 - 05:11 PM My favorite is still a Bore of Ballads, or a Boring of Ballads. Bert just beat me to it. Look, a verse or three is OK....30 odd or more....sheesh. |

Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Dec 07 - 08:08 PM A pity that so many folks seem to suffer from ADD when it comes to ballads. The Classic Comics approach to telling a story seems to be growing in popularity. |
Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: Dan Schatz Date: 20 Dec 07 - 09:27 PM I love ballads - but usually a few at a time. Over the course of two hours, they eventually risk becoming: a tedium of ballads Nevertheless, I've sometimes thought of putting together a recording of ballads called "The Ballad Tree," because I like the image. (And I like ballads.) I wouldn't want it to become a tedium, though.... Dan |

Subject: RE: Collective Noun for ballads From: dick greenhaus Date: 21 Dec 07 - 12:10 PM Just to be pedantic, I believe the technical term for this type of noun is "venereal"---based on the old term for hunting, rather than sexually transmitted thingees. |
