Subject: Collective Noun for ballads
From: GUEST,stagemanager_x
Date: 13 Nov 07 - 11:42 AM

After listening to Norman Kennedy sing and talk at MIT last night, a couple of us were discussing ballads. The recent "Ballad Blast" at NOMAD came up and I found the term a little unsatisfying: maybe a blast of sea chanteys, but a blast of ballads?! We quickly moved from event names to collective nouns, and came up with:
a quarrel of ballads
a length of ballads
a sitting of ballads

      ...but I know there's better.

So who out there has a good collective noun for ballads?

a chorus of ballads?
a stream of ballads?
a flight of ballads? a flock? a feast?
a catch? a haul? a reminiscence? a treasure trove? a hoard? an airing?

But NOT a mayhem of ballads, nor a hubbub, nor a gale.

Maybe a menagerie, a throng; or a swarm, if they are buzzing.

I would be inclined to call it a fugue of ballads. Or, more metaphorically, a tide of ballads.

A May morning of ballads.

I can't believe I am the first pedant to point out that technically these are Nouns of Assembly, not Collective Nouns. Collective Nouns are unqualified by their constituent elements e.g. The Navy, mankind,Parliament, (not a Navy of sailors, a mankind of people, a Parliament of crooks).

typo--for my post after guest.Sminky's welcome 'enchantment of ballads', I meant to write 'if they are *other*worldly... (well, and I guess even if they're not when the singing's magic)
