Just to be pedantic, I believe the technical term for this type of noun is "venereal"---based on the old term for hunting, rather than sexually transmitted thingees.

Since several people have been 'collecting' all possible recorded versions of Child ballads and posting them on *USENET* for the last 2 years, perhaps a GIG would be a good name. (actually closer to 30 gigs)..a NET? ...a DRIVE?...

I love ballads - but usually a few at a time. Over the course of two hours, they eventually risk becoming:

a tedium of ballads

Nevertheless, I've sometimes thought of putting together a recording of ballads called "The Ballad Tree," because I like the image. (And I like ballads.) I wouldn't want it to become a tedium, though....

A pity that so many folks seem to suffer from ADD when it comes to ballads. The Classic Comics approach to telling a story seems to be growing in popularity.

I recommend
A fascination of ballads.

Or, if one is inclined to be sour about it, as many seem to be, above:

A length of ballads
An eternity of ballads
A distraction of ballads
An irritation of ballads

And that's enough

The difficulty here may be as in our old friend John Barleycorn. A handful of corn, a sack, a row, a stand, a sheaf, a garner. Depends on situation. A singer may present a sequence of ballads. Several singers would bring us a succession. In a book a collection.
A murder of crows describes them wherever they are, as does a charm of finches.
I like 'garner' as in 'Garners Gay'...

typo--for my post after guest.Sminky's welcome 'enchantment of ballads', I meant to write 'if they are *other*worldly... (well, and I guess even if they're not when the singing's magic)

A May morning of ballads.

I can't believe I am the first pedant to point out that technically these are Nouns of Assembly, not Collective Nouns. Collective Nouns are unqualified by their constituent elements e.g. The Navy, mankind,Parliament, (not a Navy of sailors, a mankind of people, a Parliament of crooks).
