Just to say my new book is at last in the shops. Doh Ray Me, When Ah Wis Wee, published by Birlinn. Over 900 songs and rhymes of the last 150 years, of which hundreds are first time published, collected 1960s to 2007. The rude ones, the anti-school ones, the true story of Coltart and his Candy , a bunch of tunes, etc.
So relieved it is at last out there!
Ewan

Congratulations, Ewan!

Your book sounds Wonderful!!!

Is your book available for purchase outside of the UK? If so, would you please post the purchasing information for the USA?

I'd love to buy a copy of it.

Thanks.

Well, I'd have said I'm an old stay-at-home, except I'm a few weeks back from Uganda, where we set up a community recording studio for ex-street kids to record their own songs, and whence I brought home suspected malaria. It ain't that, which means no-one knows what it is, but it doesn't bother me much now.
As the old song has it
I have no pain, dear mother, now
But, oh, I am so dry
Connect me to some brewery
To lay me down and die

Regards, and thanks for good wishes

Ewan

Hi, Ewan -
Long time, no see.
Please check with Dick Greenhaus and see if you can work out a way for us US folks to buy your book. I'd sure like a copy.

Jack, though my Uganda doings are off my own back [I worked there in the 1960s], New Makars yesterday agreed to put out an appeal for unwanted recording equipment for the new project.
Joe, I've said to Dick that since the new book is published by Birlinn [as is the new Hamish Henderson book]it should be possible for him to deal direct with them.
Ewan

I was visiting family in Linlithgow earlier this week and found a copy of this book on sale. The story of Coltart's Candy is amazing, and the depth of research done by Ewan is wonderful to behold. I meant to give the book to my nephews for Christmas but I was so enthralled that I've kept it for myself and now I'll have to get another copy for them!

Its a pity that Birlinn missed out on an opportunity to link in with the superb exhibition of paintings by Joan Eardley at the National Galleries of Scotland. Her paintings of Glasgow street children of the 1950's, and the accompnaying photographs by her and by Audrey Walker complement the songs in Ewan's book perfectly.
