If any Irish catters are listening to John Spillane's show on the radio right now (9:20 pm Irish time): WHO is that gorgeous SINGER??? Eamonn something-that-sounds-like-finebhain (forgive non-existent spelling). He sang a song with a harp accompaniment, and just a few moments ago a second track, (spelling alert) Airdhe Cuainn.

Went to R na G's website, found John's page but can't read enough Irish to find the playlist (if there is one). Any help out there as to who he is? This guy is seriously GOOD.

Yours in eternal hope...

The broadcast is currently available HERE . I had a brief scan through it. The singer is called Eamonn O'Faogáin - I'm guessing at the spelling, it may be an Irish version of Fagan (or indeed, vice versa!). Programme features a new CD of his consisting of songs, in Irish and English, about the game of hurling. Haven't heard him before.

Regards

Thankyouthankyouthankyou !!!! That is indeed the name (sounds like - in bonehead spelling - FOYgoin). If you haven't heard him, be sure to keep an ear out. He has a lyrical sweetness but it's never sugary, and he's going to be a new fave of mine.

Thanks for your spelling estimate, which looks a lot closer than anything I could come up with. Now I can try Googling him (sounds faintly rude, that...). You're a star, Martin!

BTW I agree on the "lyrical sweetness" comment - but would prefer a bit more fire! Compare with Eoin O'Suilleabhan on the same show, singing about Christy Ring, the famous hurler.

Éamonn is a schoolteacher and lives in County Antrim; I have come across him several times at Cultúrlann Mac Adaim Ó Fiach in Belfast

I'm reviewing this CD at the minute for publication in La Nua on Wednesday 5th Decemeber - it's called Mo Chaman Ban: Songs of Hurlers and Hurling, by Eomonn O Faogain.
Hopefully I can publish details of how to purchase it -- I know it's available at the Ceathru Poili in the Culturlann Belfast, but maybe there is some on-line source for orders too.

Yes, do please give us purchasing details if you find any. BTW not all tracks seem to be about hurling, judging from what I heard (e.g. Áirde Cuain).

Also, can you tell us who the harp player was? Many thanks for posting -
